Meryl Streep to Play Joni Mitchell in Cameron Crowe Biopic, Confirms Clive Davis

Record executive Clive Davis has confirmed the long-rumored casting of Meryl Streep as Joni Mitchell in Cameron Crowe’s upcoming biopic.

As reported by Rolling Stone, Davis shared the news during his annual pre-Grammys party at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Saturday. Rumors of Streep playing an older version of Mitchell in the film first surfaced in 2024.

Anya Taylor-Joy was later rumored to be playing a younger Mitchell, though that casting has yet to be confirmed.

When reached by Rolling Stone for comment, Crowe pointed to the magazine toward Davis’ announcement.

A longtime fan and friend of Mitchell, Crowe was originally revealed to have been secretly working on the film in 2023. More recently, the filmmaker told Stephen Colbert in October 2025 that he had been working on the biopic with the legendary singer-songwriter for about four years.

“We have regular meetings where I can ask her anything, and she speaks with her heart about all kinds of stuff,” he said. “It’s a movie that will be not from a distance… This is from her perspective, her life, looking out.”

Describing Mitchell as a “pack rat,” Crowe continued, “She’s kept all of her costumes, all of her clothes, all of her instruments. She’s even still the landlady of her famous house in Laurel Canyon. So this is a really personal, wonderful look at her life and music.”
