With the 30th anniversary of JAY-Z’s classic debut, Reasonable Doubt, coming in June, the Bed-Stuy native has already begun celebrating the milestone. Between vinyl releases, a stylistic name change, and a new website, Hov’s biggest fans have followed a trail of breadcrumbs indicating that the MC could be hinting at a residency at Barclays Center, the Brooklyn venue he christened with an eight-night run in 2012.
In the three decades since the then 26-year-old former drug dealer released Reasonable Doubt, Jay has reached the upper echelon of artistic and business achievements, from breaking an Elvis record with 14 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, becoming the first hip-hop billionaire in 2019, and earning his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
While 2017’s critically acclaimed 4:44 likely marked JAY-Z’s farewell solo album, and he has since focused on running Roc Nation, there will always be demand for one of the greatest rappers ever to return to the stage. As we await official word on a potential JAY-Z Barclays run, Consequence has rounded up all the evidence pointing to his return — in chronological order.
The Original Version of “Dead Presidents” Hits Streaming
On February 20th, JAY-Z celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Nas-sampling original version of “Dead Presidents” by bringing it to streaming services for the first time. The track served as the lead single for Reasonable Doubt, but didn’t make the final cut. Its sequel, “Dead Presidents II,” was included on the album instead.

As part of the launch, he also made it available in limited formats, including vinyl, CD, and cassette.
Bringing Back the Umlaut
The arrival of “Dead Presidents” on streaming services was accompanied by a change in his artist name back to JAŸ-Z across digital platforms.
When Jay was rising through the ranks of New York hip-hop back in the mid-90s, he initially went by JAŸ-Z. This branding included the release of Reasonable Doubt and continued up to 1997’s In My Lifetime, Vol. 1.
Launching a New Website
JAY-Z also launched a new website titled JAŸ-Z30, where fans could purchase the physical copies of “Dead Presidents” until they sold out. Now, the site houses exclusive vinyl for “N***a What, N***a Who (Originator 99) / Dirt Off Your Shoulder.”
A Two-Week Opening at Barclays Center
On February 21st, a vigilant fan spotted a blackout in the event calendar at Barclays Center beginning on June 20th. The WNBA’s New York Liberty are scheduled for a lengthy road trip and will not return for a home game until July 3rd.
While Joji recently announced a one-off performance on June 26th, there are no other major bookings that would stand in the way of a potential multi-night residency. Though the NBA Draft has recently taken place at Barclays, that event has not been officially announced yet.
