Prince Wouldn’t Let Bruce Springsteen and Madonna Use His Dressing Room Bathroom

Prince Wouldn't Let Bruce Springsteen and Madonna Use His Dressing Room Bathroom

Prince’s dressing room bathroom was apparently off limits to his fellow music superstars, including Bruce Springsteen and Madonna, at least according to the late musician’s onetime drummer Bobby Z.

This coming Tuesday, April 21st, marks the 10th anniversary of Prince’s passing, and in tribute to the music icon, The Guardian rounded up a handful of his associates to reflect on his life and career. In a first-hand account, Bobby Z., who played in Prince’s backing band the Revolution from 1978 through 1986, recalled the legendary artist’s uneasiness around other iconic figures.

“He found meeting other celebrities very uncomfortable unless he was a fan,” recollected Bobby Z. “He could get bashful or embarrassed, or there could be huge stars and he just wouldn’t give them the time of day. So besides shaking Elizabeth Taylor’s hand I don’t know if he’d be interested in chatting.”

Recalling a real-life scenario that could have very well made a great Chappelle’s Show sketch, Bobby Z. added, “Once there was a hilarious moment when Bruce Springsteen and Madonna came backstage but Prince’s dressing room was off limits to them, so they had to use the band’s toilet. When he met David Bowie at Paisley Park it was a warm moment, because he felt that they were equals.”

Both Springsteen and Madonna have expressed their admiration for Prince. Springsteen performed a cover of “Purple Rain” shortly after Prince’s passing in 2016, and recently played it again at the Minneapolis kickoff of his current US tour (pick up tickets here).

With Madonna, Prince co-wrote and produced the track “Love Song” on her 1989 album, Like a Prayer. The Material Girl recently announced a new album, titled Confessions II, set to arrive on July 3rd, and just released the new single “I Feel So Free.”
