mgk and Wiz Khalifa Team up for Breezy Summer Anthem “girl next door”

mgk and Wiz Khalifa Team up for Breezy Summer Anthem "girl next door"

Summary

  • mgk and Wiz Khalifa have officially reunited for their first collaboration in over a decade with the release of their new joint single, “girl next door”
  • Produced by SlimXX, BazeXX, and No Love For The Middle Child, the track flips a sample from indie electronic duo Sweet Trip for a hazy, dream-pop hip-hop vibe
  • The release is accompanied by a comedic music video where the two artists play roommates who hilariously fail to woo their new female neighbors

Move over, 2016: it’s starting to feel like 2011 again. More than a decade after they linked up on the 2013 fan-favorite “Mind of a Stoner,” mgk and Wiz Khalifa are officially back together. The superstars have joined forces to drop “girl next door,” a breezy, nostalgia-soaked joint single that perfectly recaptures the easy creative chemistry that first made them a dominant force during the internet’s legendary Blog Era.

Produced by frequent mgk collaborators SlimXX, BazeXX, and No Love For The Middle Child, “girl next door” leans heavily into a hazy, late-night summer energy. The track flips a dreamy sample from indie electronic duo Sweet Trip, seamlessly blending dance-floor synths and propulsive drums with the laidback, effortless bars both rappers are known for. It’s a sonic pivot from mgk’s recent output—like last month’s nü-metal smash “FIX UR FACE” featuring Fred Durst—but it immediately hits a sweet spot for long-time hip-hop fans.

To accompany the single, the duo dropped a playfully hilarious music video directed by mgk’s go-to visual collaborator Sam Cahill and actor/filmmaker Gianni Paolo. The visual plays out like an early 2000s comedy, finding mgk and Wiz as roommates desperately trying to impress a pair of girls who just moved in next door (played by Lindsey Fishman and Naomi Baker). From working out in the front yard to mowing the lawn and filling up a kiddie pool, the two pull out all the stops, only to knock on the door and realize the girls are a lesbian couple. (“Oh, the Subaru,” mgk finally quips as it all clicks.) Comedian Trevor Wallace also makes a hilarious cameo as a nosy neighbor keeping tabs on their failed romantic exploits through binoculars.

The reunion single arrives with perfect timing. Wiz Khalifa is officially set to join mgk as a special guest on the second North American leg of his massive lost americana tour, kicking off this Friday, May 15. More importantly, this track is just a warm-up. The duo has been actively teasing a full collaborative album under the initials “BEB”—which fans widely speculate stands for Blog Era Boys.

By tapping straight back into the carefree energy that defined the early 2010s, mgk and Wiz Khalifa are proving that some musical chemistry never really fades. As the two prepare to hit the road together and drop a highly anticipated joint project, “girl next door” is shaping up to be the perfect soundtrack to kick off the summer.
