The legendary action franchise is heading back to the jungle to tell the ultimate origin story. Lionsgate has officially announced that John Rambo, a highly anticipated prequel to the iconic First Blood series, will hit theaters on June 4, 2027. The studio confirmed the release date alongside a new teaser poster featuring the franchise’s signature red lettering, making it clear that the film will be an exclusive theatrical event rather than a streaming play. Stepping into the role made famous by Sylvester Stallone is Noah Centineo, who will portray the younger version of the cinematic soldier.
Set during the Vietnam War, John Rambo explores the harrowing events that forged the titular character into an elite, deeply traumatized Green Beret long before he wandered into the small town of Hope, Washington in 1982’s First Blood. Helming the project is director Jalmari Helander, who recently earned massive acclaim for his brutal action hit Sisu. Helander has described the prequel as a stripped-down, gritty survival story focused on endurance, persistence, and the tragic loss of innocence amidst brutal combat.
Joining Centineo in the jungle is David Harbour (Stranger Things), who has been cast as Colonel Samuel R. Trautman. Trautman, famously played by the late Richard Crenna in the original films, serves as Rambo’s commanding officer, mentor, and one of the only people who truly understands the lethal soldier he helped create. The supporting cast is rounded out by James Franco, Jefferson White, Quincy Isaiah, Yao, and Jason Tobin.
While Stallone will not be appearing on-screen as the titular character for the first time in the franchise’s history, his fingerprints are still on the project. The legendary action star is officially attached as an executive producer. Stallone recently took to social media to express his excitement, confirming that the new film will definitively tell “the prequel, the beginning” of Rambo’s tragic and violent saga.
As Hollywood continues to revisit classic 1980s action properties, the decision to recast and rewind Rambo’s timeline presents a massive opportunity to ground the character in his gritty, psychological roots. Fans will have to wait a little over a year to see if the new recruit has what it takes to survive the war. John Rambo is officially scheduled to draw first blood exclusively in theaters on June 4, 2027.
