Netflix‘s The Witcher looks set to keep fans waiting longer for its conclusion, with reports indicating that the fifth and final season has been pushed from its originally planned 2026 release into 2027. The shift was surfaced by tracking site What’s on Netflix, whose sources say the finale has moved out of its initial window, and it lines up with Geralt’s silver-haired promotional imagery quietly vanishing from the platform’s spotlights.
The timing of the delay is the part that raises eyebrows. Season five was filmed alongside season four, which landed in 2025, with showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich framing the two as companion pieces. With the footage already in hand and no reshoots confirmed, the extra runway most likely comes down to post-production, whether that means more time rendering the show’s CG monsters or Netflix simply reshuffling where the finale sits on its calendar.
That extended wait arrives at the end of a journey that has been anything but smooth since the series launched in 2019. Adapted from Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and sharing a visual language with CD Projekt‘s hugely popular games, The Witcher debuted with Henry Cavill anchoring the cast, only for the actor to exit ahead of schedule. Cavill was replaced by The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth, and the shift coincided with the show taking greater liberties with its source material.
The finale also lands in a far more competitive field than the one The Witcher entered. Netflix has cultivated a reputation for cooling on shows outside its biggest tentpole, Stranger Things, and the fantasy series now shares shelf space with rival game adaptations that have drawn stronger buzz, namely Amazon’s Fallout and HBO’s The Last of Us. Notably, while backlash over the Cavill-less episodes was loud, it did not translate into a meaningful drop in viewership.
Netflix has not officially confirmed a new date, but the reporting points to The Witcher‘s final season arriving on the platform sometime in 2027.
