Barcelona boss admits that comeback against PSG seems unlikely

After yet another humbling defeat in the Champions League for Barcelona, coach Ronald Koeman does not seem too optimistic about his side’s progression into the next round of the competition. The Dutchman was disappointed in the team’s performance, which seemed to lack a cutting edge all across the pitch. There are plenty of questions about Koeman’s team selection however, and he certainly shares the blame for this defeat. Even so, the Blaugrana were extremely lethargic and did not show anywhere near their best football. In the post-match press conference, the manager summed up their miserable outing and evaluated their chances of progression to the next round. On the result and performance: “The result reflects the game. In the second half, they have been superior. They have been very effe...

Bill Gates: Forget the climate policy tweaks and go for the big stuff

His charitable organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is one of the world’s richest, and he’s long linked its goal of improving global health and fighting poverty with climate change. And to help drive the needed technological discoveries, he’s assembled a roster of thinkers to guide his Breakthrough Energy Ventures fund, from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and clean tech investor Vinod Khosla to hedge fund guru Ray Dalio. A central theme of Gates’ new book is the concept of a “green premium,” the cost difference between a product that emits carbon and its alternative that does not. Too often, policymakers and activists focus on small measures that may help reduce energy emissions, such as programs to weatherize homes or help renewables displace...

Carbon tax chatter returns to shake up climate politics

“We are all trying to assess the current state of climate politics and what is possible this year,” said Alex Flint, executive director of the Alliance for Market Solutions, a group of conservative leaders who support a revenue-neutral carbon tax. President Joe Biden has thrown down his marker. His campaign platform included an “enforcement mechanism” for reducing emissions, which many interpreted as a carbon tax. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has endorsed a tax. White House climate envoy John Kerry and domestic climate chief Gina McCarthy both say a tax is on the table. In a nod to political sensitivities, Biden officials also endorse a more generic carbon “price,” a term which covers an array of options such as cap and trade, and could be included alongside a clean electricity standard...

Biden gets his first energy crisis — and an opening

The resulting crisis could be a boon to Biden’s proposal to spend huge sums of money to harden the nation’s electric grid as it connects giant wind and solar power plants to cities and states thousands of miles away. That’s an essential step if the U.S. is to make a major turn toward relying on solar, wind and other renewable energy to keep the lights on. “When supply doesn’t show up, legislative or regulatory intervention begins,” said Kevin Book, managing director at the consulting firm ClearView Energy Partners. “The reactivity to a supply shock is one of the few things you can rely on.” Freezing temperatures sent energy demand soaring in Texas to levels that eclipsed even the hottest summer days. Grid operators there and across the Midwest implemented rolling blackouts to prevent...

Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings Targeted for Acquisition by Former TikTok CEO

Braun, the SB Ventures founder and manager to A-list artists including Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, made headlines in June 2019 when Ithaca purchased Taylor Swift’s former record label Big Machine for a reported $300 million. That led Swift to speak out against the acquisition, claiming Braun had engaged in “incessant, manipulative bullying” of her over a period of several years. Last November, Ithaca sold Swift’s master recordings to Shamrock Holdings, again drawing the pop star’s ire. Swift has since begun the process of re-recording her first six albums, with the first of them, Fearless, set to drop Apr. 9. In addition to Big Machine, Ithaca’s music holdings include Schoolboy Records and the Universal Music Publishing Group co-venture Sheba Publishing. You Deserve to Mak...
