Newly promoted AIG passes on

Less than one month after his promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), former Benue State Commissioner of Police, who was later in charge of Armament, Omololu Bishi, has died. Bishi, a Lagos indigene, died yesterday after complaining of body ache. It was not clear if his death had anything to do with the ravaging coronavirus. Newsmen confirmed the death of Bishi through a police source, who said he was to be buried at the Ebony Vault in Lagos today. “Yes, he is dead. It’s unfortunate but true”, the source said. The late Bishi was among 13 AIGs promoted by the Police Service Commission (PSC) on December 18, 2020. Beyond Save Our Stages: NIVA Director Details Next Steps for Venue Owners

“One of the components of Save Our Stages Act is that should this continue longer than any of us want it to continue — which it already has — but should there be a need for additional funds, it’s part of the language of this program,” said Rev. Moose on the panel, adding that the act takes into account that more funding could be necessary depending on the duration of the pandemic. Rev. Moose continued that while he is not a “political soothsayer,” he does believe the bipartisan appeal of the SOS Act could mean an easier and more efficient path to additional funding if venues are forced to keep their doors shuttered for longer than expected. “I don’t know what the future is going to bring, but I would hope that if there is a need for additional COVID funding, that the government...

Ugandan presidential candidate Bobi Wine says military raided his home

Ugandan opposition presidential candidate Bobi Wine said soldiers raided his home on Tuesday and arrested his security guards, two days before an election. “The army has this morning raided my home, arrested all my security guards and anyone they could see around my premises,” Wine, who is the opposition frontrunner, said on Twitter. “No reason for the arrest was given,” he said. Spokesmen for the military and the police did not respond to phone calls seeking comment. Ugandans vote on Thursday in elections pitting long-time leader Yoweri Museveni against 10 candidates including Wine, a singer-turned-lawmaker whose star power has rattled the ruling party. Wine also said in a separate post on Twitter that soldiers raided the home of one of his aides overnight and took the man to an unknown d...

Newcastle desperate to secure Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori

Newcastle United are interested in securing Chelsea centre-back Fikayo Tomori. The youngster has not played as much as he expected in the first half of this campaign. Tomori is sidelined given the preference of manager Frank Lampard of playing Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma in central defense. According to FourFourTwo, the 23-year-old is attracting interest from the Magpies, along with Leeds United and Burnley. Any move would be a loan for the second half of the season. Tomori did not even play in the FA Cup third round game against Morecambe for Chelsea, further indicating a move could be imminent. Blues boss Lampard told football.london: “The situation with Fikayo is open at the moment. There is a possibility he could be going on loan to get games somewhere else. “So that would have to be t...

Coronavirus: Concern grows over potential superspreader event during US Capitol riot

Concerns are mounting about the health of lawmakers and other people in the Capitol last week, after the first member to test positive for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) since Wednesday’s chaos, said she believed she was exposed in a crowded hiding place with hundreds of other legislators. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., tested positive on Monday while experiencing mild symptoms, and said in a statement that she believes she caught the virus from her fellow lawmakers while hunkering down as Capitol Police struggled for hours to contain a Trump-inspired mob attack on the Capitol. Lawmakers were trapped in a room near the Capitol with hundreds of others, in some cases for hours, where at least one person who later tested positive for the coronavirus was present. The Office of the Attending P...

Police arrest revellers, strippers in Lagos club

The Police in Lagos has arrested 43 clubbers, including strippers at Eclipse Night Club, Victoria Island, for allegedly violating COVID-19 protocols. The police spokesman, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement in Lagos on Monday. Mr. Adejobi stated that the suspects were arrested on January 10 in continuation of the command’s enforcement of the COVID-19 protocols. According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has earlier ordered Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Heads of Department to go after the violators of the protocols. “Operatives attached to Maroko Division of the state went after the deviant clubbers and got them arrested in the club clustering and clubbing without any regard for the COVID-19 protocols,” Mr. Adejobi stated. He stated tha...

Barry Gibb Set for U.K. No. 1 With ‘Greenfields’

The Bee Gees, who were inducted into the Rock Hall back in 1997, have ruled the U.K. albums chart just once, with 1979’s Spirits Having Flown, though the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, which features several contributions from the vocal group, led the national chart for a whopping 18 weeks. As fans remember David Bowie on what would have been 74th birthday and the fifth anniversary of his passing, the iconic singer’s Legacy (Parlophone) collection vaults 31-10. Also impacting the chart blast is Swedish post-punk group Viagra Boys, whose second studio album Welfare Jazz (Year0001) bows at No. 25, while Gold career retrospectives from British rockers Ian Hunter & Mott The Hoople (No. 18 via Crimson) and “Final Countdown” singers Europe (No. 34 also via Crimson) are eying Top 40 de...

Kerry climate team begins to take shape

Sue Biniaz, a longtime career State Department climate official, already has accepted a job to work on Kerry’s staff, according to a person familiar with the move. Biniaz, who was the chief lawyer working on the Paris climate accord, did not return a request for comment. Jonathan Pershing, who was the State Department special climate envoy under Obama, is also in discussions for a top role with Kerry’s team, according to three people familiar. Pershing is currently at the Hewlett Foundation, and two people said he would likely only leave the philanthropy for one year if he takes a post. Pershing did not respond to an email for comment. The new team will elevate climate change to new levels within the U.S. federal government by putting Kerry in the same room as Biden, Vice President-elect K...

Joe Biden receives second dose of coronavirus vaccine on camera

Joe Biden on Monday received the second dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine on camera, as part of an effort by the President-elect’s incoming administration to reassure the country of the safety of the vaccines. Biden was administered the shot in his left arm by Ric Cuming, chief nurse executive at ChristianaCare’s Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware, according to Biden’s transition team. The President-elect said he would be announcing his plan to “get the entire Covid operation up and running,” including the necessary costs, on Thursday. Biden said he had a meeting with members of his team later Monday afternoon. Biden said he was “not afraid of taking the oath outside,” and that his team has been getting briefed, when asked if he had any fears about taking the oath of office...
