English striker Marcus Rashford has congratulations Odion Ighalo following his contract extension with Manchester United. Ighalo was signed on loan from Shanghai Shenhua back in January after Rashford sustained an injury that ruled him out of action for three months. The six-month loan initially expired on May 31, but United decided to retain the services of the former Super Eagles striker for another six months and he now remains at Old Trafford until January 2021. Rashford who couldn’t hide his excitement after Manchester United announced the new agreement on their website took to his social media handle to congratulate his teammate. “Congrats @ighalojude 👏🏾♥️” Rashford wrote on Twitter. Ighalo who has scored four goals in eight matches for the club will be ...
Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr has defended his decision for overlooking players in the Nigeria Professional Football League for national team selection. Since his appointment four years ago, Super Eagles, only Heartland goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has enjoyed constant invitation into the team and many have accused him of killing other talents in the domestic league. Rohr has now defended himself and said he has invited 23 players from the local league since he took the Super Eagles in 2016, but it became difficult to continue working with the players because most of them are leaving for greener pasture. “Unfortunately, Nigeria professional football league is not playing like other leagues that are coming back, but they also have a chance to come in my team and you know I already invited 23...
And with the economy in such solid shape before Covid-19 struck, plenty of states and localities look like they’ll be able to muddle through the next fiscal year — which for most of them starts in July. “This crisis is still in its very early stages,” said Carl Davis of the liberal Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. Davis noted that the last recession began in December 2007, about nine months before the global financial system really imploded. And yet, many state tax increases didn’t happen until 2009 or even later as they dealt with the fallout. “There’s a bit of lag, with state lawmakers often waiting to raise taxes until they’re confronted with having to enact terrible budget cuts,” Davis said. In fact, some states right now aren’t even leaning that heavily on their rainy ...
A coroner has revealed that an overdose of cocaine killed Twilight actor Boyce Gregory and his Nigerian girlfriend, Natalie Adepoju. The 30-year-old actor was found dead at his Las Vegas home alongside his girlfriend Natalie Adepoju on May 13. They were reportedly found by the actor’s cousin, who was also staying in the home at the time. After arriving at the scene, officers are said to have found a white ‘powdery substance’ inside the room. According to Clark County coroner, John Fudenberg, the duo died from an ”accidental” overdose of cocaine and fentanyl intoxication. Meanwhile, the couple left behind Gregory’s 10-year-old daughter, Alaya, and Natalie’s son, Egypt. Gregory was best known for his role as Tyler Crowley in the Twilight series, one of Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) high sch...
Pupils wearing face masks returned to school in Singapore on Tuesday and some workplaces re-opened as coronavirus restrictions were eased in the hard-hit city-state. Singapore initially kept infections low through a strict regime of testing and contact-tracing, only for major outbreaks to emerge from crowded dormitories housing low-paid foreign workers. The country has recorded over 35,000 cases – the highest official tally in Southeast Asia – with the vast majority among workers from the dorms. The death toll stands at 24. Authorities imposed a partial lockdown in early April, with schools and most workplaces told to close, and people only allowed to leave home for essential purposes. But with new infections slowing and no major outbreaks outside dorms, the government began easing measure...
File Photo The President of Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick has disclosed that the Federation is working tirelessly to recruit qualified coaches for the country’s senior women national, the Super Falcons. The record African Women championship winners are still without a coach since former boss, Thomas Dennerby, walked out of the team a few weeks after leading the team to knock out phase of the 2019 women’s world cup in France. Christopher Danjuma was later appointed as caretaker boss after the departure of swede, but the failure of the team to qualify for the next summer’s Olympics in Tokyo automatically ruled him out of the job. Pinnick said the search for the right coach for the team has begun and the announcement will be made at the right time. “We are working to see how we ca...
The panel’s chair countered that such ambitious proposals would resonate with Democratic voters. “This is good politics for Joe Biden and for the Democratic Party,” said Michelle Deatrick who led the panel and was a surrogate for Sen. Bernie Sanders during the primaries, calling climate change “one of the top two issues for Democrats and a lot of independents.” “Trump’s going to call Biden a lefty no matter what, right?” she said. “So let’s energize our base, let’s energize the middle. Let’s do what’s right because the planet is at stake.” The 12-person panel, which became a permanent DNC entity in February, is stocked with progressives rather than traditional party power players. It includes environmental activists, environmental justice organizers, academics, a labor representative, a fa...
The President of Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick says Gernot Rohr remains the best man for the Super Eagles and deserved to keep his job. Rohr signed a new two and half year deal with the Nigeria Football Federation last week to put an end to an end to all the speculations linking him away from the job. While speaking with journalists on social media chat on Monday, Pinnick said the Federation is happy with the Franco-German coach regardless of reports going round in the media. “We are of the view and conviction that Mr. Gernot Rohr deserves to continue the job he is doing with the Super Eagles. I believe he has earned it. He had a right of first refusal so it was not a problem. We included a few other things in his contract but at the end of the day, we were able to come to an a...
Seven civilians were killed by a roadside bomb linked to the Taliban in northern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday, even as authorities pressed for peace talks with the militants. The blast struck a small truck carrying a group of labourers late Monday in the volatile district of Khan Abad, in the province of Kunduz. No group claimed responsibility, but Kunduz provincial spokesman Esmatullah Muradi pointed the finger at the Taliban. “The Taliban usually plant roadside bombs to target security forces, but their bombs usually kill civilians,” he told AFP. Two of six others wounded in the blast were in critical condition, said district chief Hayatullah Amiri. Earlier this year, a United Nations report said more than 10,000 people were killed or wounded in the war in 2019 alone. Overall viol...
File Photo The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has decorated spokesman Mr Bisi Kazeem and others with the new rank of Assistant Corps Marshal. The decoration ceremony followed the just concluded promotion of senior officers on 30 May by the FRSC board. According to Oyeyemi it has been the culture of the Corps since 2014, not to delay the seasons of reward or let go without due recognition of individuals. “These are for those who have continued to strive to make FRSC a best global practice sustainable corporate organisation,’’ he said. Oyeyemi congratulated the newly promoted officers for the deserved elevation and implored them to be happy and proud of their success. He said that the promotion was an indication of their hard work.
