Eight inmates killed in Mexico prison fight

Eight inmates died after a brawl broke out in the high-security Mexican prison from which infamous drug trafficker “El Chapo” made his first escape, officials said Friday. The fight began after the end of a baseball match between detainees at the Puente Grande jail near Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco. A small number of prisoners suddenly attacked another group, prison director Jose Antonio Perez said. The cause of the brawl was not known, he added. Several wounded inmates were taken to different hospitals with one individual dying during the transfer, authorities said. Five detainees suspected of participating in the deadly scuffle will be questioned by the prosecutor’s office. Bayern Munich confirm €120 million Philippe Coutinho purchase option has expired

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that the Bundesliga champions have not activated their purchase option for Philippe Coutinho. Barcelona’s Brazilian midfielder joined on a season-long loan last summer, but has failed to fulfil his potential in Bavaria and Rummenigge says the clause has now expired. Oyo joint security outfit nabs seven armed robbers

The Oyo State joint security outfit, Operation Burst, has apprehended seven suspected members of an armed robbery gang in Ibadan. The Director-General of the outfit, Col. James Ajibola (rtd.), while parading the suspects on Friday in Ibadan, said that they were nabbed by the operatives at Olomi area, Ibadan, during a night patrol. He said that his team was making frantic efforts to ensure that they fulfilled the mandate given to them by Gov. Seyi Makinde to combat crimes in the state. China on Saturday reported zero new coronavirus infections for the first time since it started reporting data in January, a day after Communist Party leaders celebrated “major achievements” in the virus fight. South Africa’s confirmed coronavirus cases top 20,000

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa has reached 20,125, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Friday. The country recorded 988 cases over the past 24 hours, Mkhize said in his daily update. The death toll related with Covid-19 reached 397, up by 28 from Thursday, the minister said. The total number of recoveries to date is 10,104, he said. The Western Cape province, the epicentre of the outbreak in the country, led all other provinces with 12,888 confirmed cases, followed by Gauteng with 2,521, the Eastern Cape with 2,459, and KwaZulu-Natal with 1,735. Imo governor abolishes pensions, gratuities for former governors, speakers, deputies

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has assented to a bill repealing the law that created pension allowances and gratuities for former governors, deputy governors, assembly speakers and deputy speakers. European Photopress Agency Christopher Wray, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), said on Friday he has ordered an internal review of the investigation into President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Sudan’s coronavirus cases climb to 3,378

Sudan’s Health Ministry on Friday announced 235 new infections with COVID-19 and 16 more deaths, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 3,378 and the death toll to 137. And 63 more patients have recovered, taking the total recoveries to 372, it said. On April 18, the Sudanese government imposed a three-week curfew on Khartoum State. The curfew had been extended for 10 days from May 9 and again for two weeks from May 18.
