Flaming Lips Share Video for ‘At The Movies On Quaaludes’; Wayne Coyne Launches Weed Gummies

It’s a busy time for lovable Oklahoma oddballs Flaming Lips, as the lineup shares a cool clip for the American Head album track, “At The Movies On Quaaludes,” and singer Wayne Coyne announces a brand of Love Yer Brain cannabis products that will launch April 20. The line includes THC-infused brain-shaped gummies and will be celebrated with a 4/20 concert where the band performs 2020’s American Head in its entirety. The “At The Movies On Quaaludes” video, directed by actor/director Clark Duke, features Super 8 footage of Duke’s brother during his college years.  Clark says in a statement, “American Head, for me, is about nostalgia. For home, for childhood, for places and events and times you’ll never forget. I stumbled upon this lost, l...

Evanescence Are Stronger and Louder Than Ever

Strength has always been at the core of Evanescence. Since the group’s 1995 beginnings, vocalist/pianist Amy Lee has used her voice to reclaim something—usually herself—being loud, disruptive and bold in the process. With the release of the band’s first original album in nearly a decade, The Bitter Truth, that strength is clearer than ever, and she’s reclaiming even more this time. Maybe it’s because she had to. Lee and bassist Tim McCord were both dealing with personal cases of grief before collective mourning absorbed the whole population—and that reckoning and pain comes through on the record, especially in the gloomy poetry and vivid imagery. It’s vulnerable, but more than anything, it’s empowering. “Oh, survival hurts / But I keep breathing in,” she sings on the aptly-titled “Broken P...

‘It Needs to Sound Like a Warm Bath’: Saint Maud Composer on Scoring the Year’s Most Unsettling Horror Movie

A year of pandemic has stolen countless experiences from us—and one of them was seeing Saint Maud, the year’s most quietly unsettling horror film, on the big screen. After a planned theatrical rollout was waylaid last spring for obvious reasons, director Rose Glass’s profoundly creepy and compelling portrait of possession, religious fanaticism, and psychosis recently made its way to streaming platforms in the U.S.  The film centers around a devout catholic hospice nurse, Maud (Morfydd Clark), whose obsession with saving the soul of a terminally ill patient and ridding her of demons drives her to terrifying lengths. Impressively, the film isn’t just the debut feature from first-time director Glass—it’s also the first film score from Adam Janota Bzowski, a London composer whose groaning...

YoungBoy Never Broke Again in FBI Custody After Police Chase

Rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again, aka NBA YoungBoy, was arrested on Monday afternoon and taken into FBI custody in the Los Angeles area, according to CBSN Los Angeles. The 21-year-old Louisiana native, whose real name is Kentrell Gaulden, was wanted for an outstanding warrant. Police attempted to pull him over, but wound up in a short pursuit ending in the rapper trying to flee on foot. According to TMZ, police reportedly found a firearm in the vehicle — although it’s unclear if it belongs to Gaulden. An alleged video of the arrest was shared with TMZ, which you can watch below. Baton Rouge’s ABC affiliate, WBRZ, reported back in February that Gaulden was under federal investigation following his September 2020 arrest on drug and weapons charges. In November 2016, Gaulden was arrested and...

Monster Magnet Announce Covers Album A Better Dystopia, Share “Mr. Destroyer” (Poo-Bah): Stream

Heavy psych rockers Monster Magnet have announced a new covers album, A Better Dystopia, out May 21st. As a preview, the band has shared a ripping version of Poo-Bah’s “Mr. Destroyer”. The 13-song tracklist showcases Monster Magnet’s esoteric knowledge of obscure psych rock. They take on Hawkwind (“Born to Go”), cult NYC heavy psych act Dust (“Learning to Die”)”, The Pretty Things (“Death”), and The Scientists (“Solid Gold Hell”), among other relatively obscure gems. The idea for the covers album came after Monster Magnet’s European “Powertrip” tour was halted in February of 2020 when the pandemic hit. To occupy the downtime, the band set out to record a DIY album rather than play streaming shows or sell merch. “We all agreed that we would be bored out of our minds within a month of lockdo...

Prince’s Ashes to Be Displayed at Paisley Park On Fifth Anniversary of Death

Paisley Park officials are marking the fifth anniversary of Prince’s death by offering fans free admission to pay their respects at the suburban Minnesota compound, where his ashes will be on display in the atrium. A custom-made ceramic urn shaped like Paisley Park with Prince’s symbol on top was originally placed in the middle of the atrium when the legend’s 65,000-square-foot studio in Chanhassen first opened as a museum in October 2016. At the request of Prince’s family, the ashes were moved to a less prominent spot in the atrium and eventually removed entirely from public view, disappointing his legions of fans. A total of 1,400 people fortunate enough to get reservations at paisleypark.com will be allowed inside on April 21 for 30-minute visits to the atrium. There will be 70 time slo...

Ratner, whose OBB Media produced the project, teased that whatever audiences think happened the night of her overdose and prior “is probably pretty far from what really did.” Added Ratner: “What hasn’t been documented is the details of her life that led to that night. … We provide that opportunity for you to have a whole picture here.” And now all will be revealed in the first two episodes of the docuseries as Lovato breaks down the moment she relapsed, what led to th...

National Recording Registry Adds Titles From Nas, Janet Jackson, Kool & the Gang and More

The addition of 25 recordings this year brings to 575 the total number of titles in the registry, which selects recordings worthy of preservation based on their cultural, historical and/or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage. Several artists and songwriters whose works land on this year’s registry roster spoke with Billboard about the legacy of their work. “A Soundtrack for Life in Queensbridge”Illmatic, Nas’ debut studio album, swept onto the scene in 1994 with masterful rhymes, sample-soaked production and lyrics that painted an unabashed portrait of life growing up in the Queensbridge housing project in Queens, NY, home to a bevy of rap and hip-hop luminaries. Producers, including Q-Tip, Large Professor, Pete Rock, L.E.S. and DJ Pre...

PAUL STANLEY Says JIMI HENDRIX Was ‘Arguably The Greatest Rock Guitar Player’

In a new interview with Germany’s Rolling Stone, KISS frontman Paul Stanley was asked what he thinks about the fact that rock and roll music — a genre rooted in black traditions, and many of whose earliest stars were black — has come to be understood as the natural province of whites while soul music is regarded chiefly as a black musical genre. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “Well, I think that it’s narrow, and it’s a generality. Arguably the greatest rock guitar player was Jimi Hendrix. And there’s loads of terrific white — for lack of a better word — ‘soul’ singers. “I think it’s a very broad statement,” he reiterated. “And I think that generalities don’t do justice to the exceptions of the gener...
