The New CIA Logo is Getting Roasted for Its Resemblance to a Rave Flyer

What’s more lit than secret CIA operations? More dope than clandestine government missions? More sick than protecting national security?  Those questions must have been the criteria for the CIA’s new aesthetic rebrand, which has been lambasted for pandering to Millennials and Gen-Z in its goal to attract recruits. After the Central Intelligence Agency unveiled its chic 2021 re-skin, the Internet does what it does best—roast it. The organization’s new logo, which has been dragged for its resemblance to a voguish techno party flyer, looks as if it was designed by an anthropomorphized black v-neck. The dystopian rebrand produced some hysterical tweets, most of which liken it to an esoteric Detroit techno party that you wouldn’t be invited to. After ...

Three different series of The Protovault will be rotated on a monthly basis, with each collection only available for 30 days. Instead of genres of music, the series is centered around cinematic themes, the first of which focuses on classic action films of the 1980s. 25 multi-sampled instrume...

Live Nation and Studio Brussels are Selling Tickets to a Post-COVID Rave—With No Date

Some people are seriously itching to get back to the dance floor. And some of those people want it so badly that they are willing to put money down on an event that doesn’t even have an official date set in stone. Well, that event is now coming (at some point) after the announcement of the aptly titled “I Want To Dance Again” party, the brainchild of Live Nation Belgium and Studio Brussel. As for the date this rave will take place, absolutely no one knows—not even the promoters. “I Want To Dance Again” is to be held at Antwerp’s Lotto Arena on the soonest possible date when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted in Belgium. That means the event will be the first post-COVID indoor rave without required masks and social distancing measures in...

RÜFÜS DU SOL, Zeds Dead, REZZ, More to Perform at Red Rocks in 2021: See the Full Schedule

Though nobody truly knows just how long pandemic safety measures will be in place, it seems that live music is more than ready to make its return. Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre has just released its concert schedule for 2021. When last year’s season was cut short by COVID-19, many shows at the fabled open-air venue unfortunately needed to be postponed. The 2021 schedule includes many of those shows, along with new concert dates for some of dance music’s biggest stars. Among those shows are two dates with RÜFÜS DU SOL, REZZ, Rusko, Lindsey Stirling, Zeds Dead, LSDREAM, Alison Wonderland, and a rescheduled three-night takeover with Ganja White Night. Additionally, legendary musical acts such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ziggy and Stephen Marley, and For...

Killer Mike Talks U.S. Capitol Raid and Georgia Election With Seth Meyers

Killer Mike and Seth Meyers discussed the unprecedented raid on the U.S. capitol, with the Run the Jewels rapper calling the events of Jan. 6 “evil. It is I-didn’t-get-my-way-ism. I don’t encourage what we saw,” he said on Late Night with Seth Meyers last night. He added, “essentially, it is violence.” The Atlanta-based rapper also shared his thoughts about the newly elected Democratic senators from his home state. On Rev. Raphael Warnock, a pastor and politician, Mike joked, “I’ll tell you one of the most beautiful things I saw. He ran a commercial holding a puppy. Because who could hate a person holding a puppy?” “More genius, I thought,” Mike added, was an opposing campaign video which called Warnock a “radical socialist.” Noting that he himself was not a member of any Abraham...

Kings of Leon Announce New LP, When You See Yourself, Release Lead Singles

Kings of Leon are back with an announcement of their eighth studio album, When You See Yourself, out March 5. The lead singles, “The Bandit,” and “100,000 People” are out now, the former alongside a black and white music video of the band performing. It’s their first album since 2016’s WALLS. They’ve been teasing new material consistently on Instagram, posting snippets of new songs. Other Instagram posts tease two more singles with the phrases “Spin it Like We Can” and “Dancing in Your Head,” though it’s uncertain whether those are the titles or lyrics.  The band had first hinted at new music last February and are making good on their social media promises, with the band’s Jared Followill dropping a cheeky tweet on Christmas day. It teased: “if you were promised new Kings mu...

Nick Cave Announces New Album Carnage With Warren Ellis

Nick Cave announced his 18th studio album, Carnage, this morning via a brief, cryptic newsletter mention. In issue 129 of The Red Hand Files, the recluse wrote about the lockdown and his familiarity with isolation as a former heroin addict. He also lamented his inability to play live, which might be why he decided to channel his energy into recording new music. “Anyway, as promised in my last issue, I did go into the studio — with Warren [Ellis] — to make a record.,” he adds at the conclusion of the newsletter.  Reponsding to a question about the COVID-19 lockdown from a fan named Tobias, Cave said: “I was a heroin addict for many years and self-isolating and social distancing were the name of the game. I am also well acquainted with the mechanics of grief — collective grief work...

Neil Peart’s Family and Friends Detail the Drummer’s Final Years in New Interview

The surviving members of RUSH, as well as Neil Peart’s family and friends, sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss the legendary drummer’s final years. The feature was published on Thursday to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Peart’s death. Peart was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, in August 2016 and was given 12-18 months to live. Prior to the diagnosis, Peart’s wife, Carrie Nuttall, said she noticed changes in her husband’s behavior: he struggled to complete his beloved crossword puzzles and had difficulty speaking. At first, Nuttall assumed he was merely depressed, but her fears were realized after he received an MRI and ended up in surgery. Friends say Peart handled the illness with “strength and stoicism,” and was determined to make the most of each da...

Ariel Pink Attended Capitol Protest, Iced Earth’s Jon Schaffer Stormed the Building

Instead of affirming the election of President-elect Joe Biden after some anticipated perfunctory displays of self-serving dogmatism, members of Congress faced an insurrection of Trump supporters on Wednesday. While the scary event likely turned some away from blind faith in a failed leader, it also may cause others to reconsider being fans of certain musicians: It turns out Ariel Pink and John Maus attended the Capitol protest-turned-seige, while Jon Schaffer of metal band Iced Earth was actually amongst those who stormed the building. Pink himself confirmed he was in Washington, DC with Maus after director Alex Lee Moyer, known for the pro-incel documentary TFW NO GF, posted an image of the three of them in a hotel. “The day we almost died but instead had a great time,” read the cap...

Vanessa Kirby Stands Tall In Netflix’s Shrugworthy Pieces of a Woman: Review

This review was originally part of our coverage of the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival . The Pitch: Pregnant couple Sean (Shia LaBeouf) and Martha (Vanessa Kirby) go through a dangerous labor with a new midwife, Eva (Molly Parker), only for the worst possible outcome to occur. In the months that follow, they each process their grief and anger in different ways. Meanwhile, Martha’s mother, Elizabeth (Ellen Burstyn), pushes for legal justice that may or may not offer the closure that the family needs. Labour Pains: When people discuss Kornél Mundruczó’s Pieces of a Woman, the discussion will inevitably be broken into two parts. Most will focus on the film’s first 33 minutes, which takes place entirely on September 17th and follows – in one long, mostly uninterrupted take – the night...

Metallica’s Music Provides Soundtrack to Student Protests in Istanbul: Watch

Metallica’s James Hetfield (photo by Amy Price), Istanbul Protest (via Twitter: Ahval) University students in Istanbul blasted the Metallica classics “Master of Puppets” and “Sad But True” to protest the appointment of a new rector with ties to Turkey’s conservative ruling party. Interestingly, the new rector himself has claimed to be a Metallica fan. According to The Guardian, Melih Bulu was appointed rector of Boğaziçi University by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on January 1st. The decision outraged students and professors, who argue that the decision was an affront to their academic freedoms. Bulu was the first official to be appointed outside the university community since a 1980 military coup. Bulu is a self-described fan of heavy metal, exclaiming, “I am a rector who l...
