The venture grew out of Posen’s desire to, in his words, “do more than make bands rich and famous” — an undertaking that feels prescient in light of today’s developments, when seemingly every major music company (particularly in the wake of this summer’s Black Lives Matter protests) now makes a point of touting its social action initiatives. But Hopeless stands as one of the earliest labels, major or independent, to make giving back not just a side project but a core part of its mission. Running a record label was never a part of the plan for Posen, who as a film student at California State University, Northridge had his mind set on becoming a director. But that dream circuitously led him to establish Hopeless after the punk band Guttermouth — who had hired him to direct a musi...
1. Bad Bunny’s El Último Tour del Mundo has become the first all-Spanish album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. On a scale of 1-10, how significant is that specific accomplishment? Andrew Unterberger: Let’s say a 7.5. The accomplishment itself is of course major, but it’s hard to rate it as an eight or higher because it’s not even a real new peak for Bad Bunny, let alone all of Latin pop — his YHLQMDLG album actually put up much better first-week numbers (179,000 equivalent album units to 116,000 for El Último), but just had the misfortune of debuting the same week that Lil Baby’s My Turn juggernaut bowed at No. 1. It’s one for the record books, no doubt, but it just shows how major Latin pop in general, and Bad Bunny in particular, ha...
AC/DC knows a thing or two about the dark side. The band that brought you “Highway to Hell” took a trip down that fiery road in their new video for “Demon Fire.” The clip debuted on the video game Fortnite in its Nexus War Event. As you can see below, a muscle car journeys down a dark highway to…hell and ends up having to fend off bikers and cops in the process. [embedded content] Power Up was released on Nov. 13 and went No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in its first week — becoming the second rock album this year to top the charts following Machine Gun Kelly’s Tickets to My Downfall in September. It was the Australian rockers’ third No. 1 album. Previously, AC/DC shared a video for “Shot in the Dark.” We spoke with the band’s Brian Johnson and Angus Young ahea...
Last year fans of both Slushii and BTS were in full anticipation mode after the former teased he was working on a new remix for the beloved pop group. Sadly, his “Make It Right” remix never came to fruition, but that’s not stopping him from making it right with BTS’ fans. The producer took to social media yesterday to share a sneak peek into an unreleased remix of the group’s hit single “Dynamite.” From the short clip below, you can tell Slushii’s remix is going to be big. Slushii previously served up a remix of “Waste It On Me,” BTS’ collaborative hit with Steve Aoki. The group also dropped an EDM remix of their own for the single “Dynamite” alongside an acoustic version t...

Norwegian producer Malvae took an unusual approach to the creation of his debut album, trading in the typical studio setting for a 2,000 kilometer trek through the Amazon Rainforest. Sleeping in hammocks and sheds was just a part of everyday life during his journey, as was engaging with local indigenous communities across four countries that would provide endless inspiration. Malvae finally emerged from the region a life-changing six weeks later, equipped with an arsenal of audio recordings that would set the foundation for what would become the appropriately titled Amazonas. Released independently on December 4th, 2020, Amazonas is composed of 13 tracks with highly conceptualized aural mystique, weaving together exotic samples, distorted vocals and eerily resonating s...
AC/DC‘s music video for “Demon Fire” can be seen below. The song is taken from the band’s latest album, “Power Up”, which recently hit the No. 1 spot in 18 countries, including in the U.S., where it sold over 117,000 copies in the first week. “Demon Fire” was featured in the final tense shooting sequence in the Fortnite Galactus event, which took place on December 1. The game’s Chapter 2, Season 4-ending live event saw players take control of Fortnite‘s iconic Battle Bus, which drops users onto the playing field at the start of every game, and fight the planet-eating Galactus in an epic battle to save reality. It laid the groundwork for the start of Fortnite: Season 5. AC/DC is the only Australian group in history to have had a No...
In a recent interview with Brazil’s Heavy Culture, TESTAMENT singer Chuck Billy was asked what his biggest regret is from the early years of the band. He responded (see video below): “I don’t know if there’s a lot of regrets. I look back now, [and] as far as the business goes, maybe we weren’t paying attention close enough with labels, management, lawyers — the whole thing. “When we signed [our first] record contract, we thought it was ‘sex, drugs and rock and roll — let’s go on tour,'” he continued. “And we didn’t think about the rest of the business. I think we were very lucky to have a guy like Jonny Z [executive producer of METALLICA‘s debut LP, ‘Kill ‘Em All’, and founder of Megaforce Records] si...
