The Pretty Reckless Cover Soundgarden’s ‘Loud Love’

The Pretty Reckless have been pretty open about their appreciation for Soundgarden. And earlier this fall, they showed their love for one of Seattle’s greatest with a cover of “Loud Love,” off the band’s 1989 sophomore record, Louder Than Love. Lead singer Taylor Momsen initially performed the song live with the surviving members of Soundgarden at “I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell” concert last year. But then the Pretty Reckless recorded their own rendition for Octane’s “Home Invasion” festival in September. The Pretty Reckless and Soundgarden have had a working relationship since 2017 when they played Soundgarden’s 2017 spring tour — right before Chris Cornell’s passing. Momsen joined forces with Matt Cameron, who’s currently in Pearl Jam, on “Halfway There,” off Soundgarden’s...

Tori Amos to Release New Holiday EP Christmastide

Tori Amos wants to get everyone in the holiday spirit a little early, and today (Nov. 9) she announced a festive new four-song EP, Christmastide. Dropping on Dec. 4 via Decca Records, the EP will come in a digital format as well as a limited edition vinyl featuring illustrations by Rantz Hosely, a special Christmas card and a message from Amos. Drummer Matt Chamberlain and bassist Jon Evans reunite with Amos on the record. She shared the importance of a holiday record, especially given the turbulent year we all are having. In a statement, Amos said, “With ‘Christmastide’ it was important to be positive and to try and lift people’s spirits. It’s a time of year that should be joyful with family and friends but also can sadly be a very lonely place for some. Many families will be unable ...

Dave Grohl on Going in a Different Direction with Upcoming ‘Party Album’ Medicine At Midnight

Many Foo Fighters fans were disappointed when their favorite rock band had to cancel all their 25th-anniversary plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, after debuting “Shame Shame” live on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, the Foo Fighters are officially back with a record that fans might not expect from the lineup. “We have a lot of albums to fall back on, so you just have to go with our gut feeling and I thought instead of making some mellow adult album, I thought ‘Fuck that, let’s make a party album’,” Dave Grohl told NME. Grohl said Medicine at Midnight is “more energetic in a lot of ways than anything we’ve ever done and it was really designed to be that Saturday night party album.” Without giving too much away, he said that the title track is reminiscent of David Bowie’s “Le...

GEEZER BUTLER Remembers EDDIE VAN HALEN: ‘I Can’t Believe He’s No Longer With Us’

Geezer Butler has lamented the passing of Eddie Van Halen one month of after the celebrated musician died, saying, “I can’t believe he’s no longer with us.” The BLACK SABBATH bassist also confirmed a long-running rumour that the band had worked with Eddie Van Halen, and that the guitarist even co-wrote a track with the Birmingham metal legends back in the 1990s. Butler made his comments while speaking to Eonmusic about the recent reissue of his solo catalog (“Plastic Planet”, “Black Science” and “Ohmwork”), which is available now via BMG. Recalling the rehearsals and recording sessions for 1993’s “Cross Purposes” — the only SABBATH album to feature the bassist and singer Tony Martin — Geezer said: “I enjoye...

Angel Bat Dawid / Tha Brothahood: LIVE

It first sounds like a straightforward request for the soundman, but soon becomes more like a plea for salvation. “Turn brother Julian up. That bass gotta hit,” urges Angel Bat Dawid early in her new album LIVE, a document of a concert she and her band Tha Brothahood gave during JazzFest Berlin in November 2019. “Turn it up! Turn that shit up!” she continues, her voice quickly reaching the edge of frenzy, as if she is a wanderer in the desert and the prospect of more low end is an oasis on the horizon. Her cries join the rhythmic stream of syllables she’s been using to introduce the tune, a radical reimagining of “Black Family,” from her 2019 debut album The Oracle. “Black, Black,” she repeats, sometimes truncating the word to emphasize its percussive quality, sometimes letting it flow lik...

Ariana Grande Bags Chart Double In U.K.

Over on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, “Positions” enters a second week at No. 1, while two more tracks from the LP crack the Top 40. Grande’s “34+35” is new at No. 9 and “Motive” featuring Doja Cat is at No. 16, extending her list of U.K. Top 40 hits to 28. She’s the fourth artist to achieve the chart double in 2020 (Drake, Eminem and Stormzy are the others), and the first female artist to score consecutive chart double wins in almost ten years (Rihanna did it in 2011). Thanks to Grande’s chart domination, Sam Smith misses out on top spot with Love Goes (Capitol), new at No. 2 on the albums survey. It’s the end of a golden streak for Smith, whose previous two albums hit the summit of the national albums survey. Veteran singer Cliff Richard rounds out an all-new Top 3 with Music… The Air...

Ariana Grande, Midnight Oil Burn Bright on Australia’s Charts

The Makarrata Project features the band collaborating with Indigenous artists and First Nations people including Jessica Mauboy, Kev Carmody, Troy Cassar-Daley, Dan Sultan and Frank Yamma, and includes the previously-released numbered, “Gadigal Land.” It’s a bittersweet result for the politically-charged rock band. Bass player Bones Hillman, who joined the band in 1987 and has been with them ever since, died Saturday (Nov. 7) after a battle with cancer. With Peter Garrett and Co. claiming top spot, Ariana Grande has to settle for a No. 2 bow with Positions, though its title track enters a second week at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and is one of eight tracks from the LP to impact this week’s Top 50. The U.S. pop star previously ruled the albums survey with My Everything (September 2014)...

Midnight Oil’s Bass Player Bones Hillman Dies at 62

Later, Hillman would step onto the biggest stages of them all when joined Midnight Oil in 1987, replacing Peter Gifford. With Hillman in the lineup, The Oils etched their name in the history books. He took his place on stage with his bandmates in Sydney in 2006 when The Oils were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, again 2009 when the rockers reunited for the Sound Relief fundraiser at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and in 2018, when the group were feted with the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music. And when Peter Garrett and Co. got the band back together for The Great Circle 2017 World Tour, Hillman took his place at front of stage. Hillman and Midnight Oil “did thousands of gigs together,” reads the band’s statement. The Kiwi musician played on 1990’s Blue Sky ...

Miley Cyrus Takes on Ariana Grande For U.K. No. 1

Based on the first weekend’s activity, just 1,000 chart sales separate the two. Little Mix are targeting their tenth Top 5 single with “Sweet Melody,” which vaults 12-4 following the release of Confetti, the girl group’s sixth studio album. The highest new entries on the chart blast belong to Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue, with “Say Something” new at No. 16 and “Magic” at No. 19. Both tracks appear on Kylie’s 15th and latest album Disco, which dropped last Friday (Nov. 6). The Official U.K. Singles Chart is published late Friday, local time. MEGADETH’s DIRK VERBEUREN Says DAVE MUSTAINE Is ‘Super Cool To Work With’ In The Studio

MEGADETH drummer Dirk Verbeuren spoke to the “Everblack” podcast about the band’s upcoming follow-up to 2016’s “Dystopia” album. The effort will be MEGADETH‘s first to feature Verbeuren (ex-SOILWORK), who joined the band four and a half years ago. “I got the privilege to spend a lot of time with the band on the road for the past four years; we did a lot of touring from 2016 through 2019,” Dirk said (see video below). “So I really got to know the guys, know what works and doesn’t, know all the different [parts the previous] three drummers contributed to every song. In the beginning, of course, I didn’t have much time to really get to the finite details of some of the stuff, but over time, I really got in depth with all ...
