LeBron James is officially joining the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8-million USD contract ahead of his record-extending 24th NBA season. The transaction brings an end to the 41-year-old superstar’s eight-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers.
James announced the move on social media, describing the signing as his “last decision” and expressing his desire to contend for another title. “I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship,” James wrote. He added that he believes he can help transform the 76ers into a title-winning roster while energizing a new fan base.
The four-time champion arrives in Philadelphia following a 22nd All-Star campaign. During his final season in Los Angeles, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals across 60 regular-season games, while increasing his production to 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists in 10 playoff contests. His departure follows the Lakers’ Western Conference semifinals sweep against the Oklahoma City Thunder, after which James informed leadership of his intention to seek a new destination.
