Alejandro Soberón Kuri talks growth, global trends and the company’s near-deal with Live Nation. Alejandro Soberón Kuri founded OCESA in 1990 to establish Mexico as an obligatory tour stop for international artists. He ended up building a global concert powerhouse third only to Live Nation and AEG. “Mexico may not be the third-biggest country in the world, but it has the third-largest live event promoter,” says Soberón Kuri, 60, from his CEO office in Mexico City — though neither he nor his colleagues have been working there during the pandemic, as major venues remain closed across the country. In 2019, OCESA’s holding company, Grupo Corporación Interamericana de Entretenimiento, produced over 3,400 shows from the United States to Colombia and throughout Central America, ...
Jarvis Cocker’s new solo project JARV IS… released its first album earlier this summer. At an exhibition about dancer and choreographer Michael Clark (aptly titled ‘A Musical Response to Michael Clark: Cosmic Dancer’) the other night, Cocker and his band performed versions of the Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs,” the Fall’s “Big New Prinz” along Cocker’s solo songs “Further Complications” and “House Music All Night Long.” The performance took place at London’s Barbican. “Take a look for yourself. Walk around, and slowly it will start to dawn on you, as it did on me: Dance is the language of the human body. And nobody speaks it better than Michael Clark,” Cocker said in a statement. Watch the performance below. [embedded content] Earlier this year, the former Pulp frontman spo...
Alanis Morissette and Taylor Hawkins paid tribute to a few musical legends and reminisced on their pasts during the latest episode of Apple Music Hits’ Alanis Radio. The longtime Foo Fighters drummer actually performed with Morissette on the Jagged Little Pill tour, joined her as the radio show’s inaugural guest on Monday. Throughout the show, the pair showed off their musical IQ as they discussed both Eddie Van Halen and Chris Cornell, among others. “We were just having our discussion about our youthful dreams about back in the day, but even before we actually got paid to do it,” Hawkins said as he introduced the episode’s first song. “...
Source: Pool / Getty If you believe his lawyers, R. Kelly is having a rough time behind bars. Allegedly, no one bothered (right away) to help the disgraced R&B singer while a fellow inmate decided to attempt to bless him with the proper fade. Back in August, the “You Remind Me” crooner was attacked in his cell by someone who was reportedly pissed R’uh’s fans have been causing jail lockdowns. R. Kelly’s lawyers are saying the CO’s took his sweet time intervening. Reports Page Six: Kelly, who was being held in Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center on federal sex abuse charges, was assaulted in August by Jeremiah Farmer, who had punched the singer repeatedly to get media attention for himself, CNN reported. The assault left Kelly with “significant physical an...
Source: Glen Luchford / i-D Fans of the talented Top Dawg Entertainment collective have been patiently awaiting the return of Kendrick Lamar, and their hopes of new music are coming to fruition slowly but surely. In a new cover story for i-D, K-Dot, and his buzzing protégé Baby Keem cover ground regarding their artistry and their aims in the midst of a tense election year among other fine points. For its 40th anniversary, i-D featured the two creative minds with photos from Glen Luchford supplementing the piece. With Kendrick playing the role of interviewer, the Compton legend in the making dives into Keem’s arc as an industry insider and front-facing artist, doing so while asking thoughtful questions like a seasoned journalist. From i-D (bolded words are Kendrick Lamar): I can see from th...
It’s that time of the week again — a new Two Minutes to Late Night cover has dropped! Marissa Nadler takes on the lead vocals on the Dusty Springfield’s version of the moody track, “Spooky.” (The song was initially done as a jazz instrumental by Mike Sharpe in 1967.) “Trick or treat! We covered that Dustry Springfield song from every Guy Richie movie (which is actually a gender-flipped cover song),” the caption accompanying the video said. Nadler is no stranger to Two Minutes and has covered Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years.” But of course, Nadler isn’t alone. Cave In and Mutoid Man leader Stephen Brodsky and Earth’s Dylan Carson are both on guitar while Emily Lee of Shearwater and Loma takes the keys and the mini theremin. She also “mysteriously” transforms into a cat at some point in t...
Over the summer, FUZZ announced III, their first new album in five years. Today, they shared the record’s third single, “Mirror,” along with a pretty creepy music video. The visuals splice footage of the band’s members — Ty Segall, Chad Ubovich and Charles Moothart — rocking out with some bizarre imagery, like Segall eating an eyeball that in turn makes his face disappear. Director Joshua Erkman described the thought behind the eerie video in a statement: In an abstract way I wanted to incorporate some of the thoughts that have been swimming around in my head about isolation; it’s pretty hard to avoid thinking about that these days,” says Erkman. “Making the video was an exciting challenge given our current circumstances – how do you shoot a rock ‘n’ roll band performin...

James Kottak says that he is “still very good friends” with his former bandmates in the SCORPIONS, four years after his exit from the group. In September 2016, the drummer was dismissed from the legendary German hard rock band during his well-publicized battle with alcoholism and was replaced by former MOTÖRHEAD member Mikkey Dee. In a new interview with the SCORPIONS official fan club Crazyscorps, Kottak discussed the circumstances that led to his departure, saying: “I always liked a drink here and there. And then I always also take a pain medication called Aleve. It’s what all the baseball players take, all the footballers, and it works like a charm. You take those of those and you don’t feel anything. But on top of that, I’m a rock drummer in a rock b...
