Guitarist Phil Demmel of reunited San Francisco Bay Area thrashers VIO-LENCE spoke to Portugal’s Underground’s Voice about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band’s new EP, tentatively due in 2021 via Metal Blade Records. “We are recording a five-song EP,” he said. “And we just finished song number four last night, and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s fast. The songs are hard to play. Sean [Killian, vocals] sounds great, man — his vocals sound so great. Perry‘s [Strickland, drums] playing crazy, like [‘Muppets’ character] Animal, back there. And the riffs are hard — I’m pushing myself with the riffs. I don’t want you to just be able to pick up a guitar and play the riff; I want it to be pretty toug...
RATING: 8/10 Following hot on the heels of last year’s welcome remix and reissue of 2013 debut album “Interstice”, KNEEL mastermind Pedro Mau has wasted no time conjuring a blistering follow-up. For those unfamiliar with this project, we are firmly in ultra-modern extreme metal territory here, with elements of death and thrash metal, brutal hardcore and even industrial and math rock swirling around in the Portuguese soloist’s sonic cauldron. The result is, in essence, an unpredictable but gloriously precise new strain of groove metal, with all the syncopated violence and techy flair that such an endeavor necessarily entails these days. But Mau is a great songwriter too, and there’s enough diversity on “Ailment” to belie its relatively straightforwa...
Sammy Hagar has spoken out in more detail about his renewed friendship with Eddie Van Halen in the months leading up to the legendary guitarist’s death. Hagar, who previously said he hadn’t talked to Eddie since since the conclusion of VAN HALEN‘s 2004 reunion tour, discussed his former bandmate in a new interview with Rock 105.5‘s “The Angi Taylor Show”. Hagar said (hear audio below): “I think that the word is pretty much out that Eddie and I buried the hatchet earlier on this year. We didn’t go around talking about it. He asked me not to talk about it, and I did not talk about it. But now, looking back, if we wouldn’t have come to terms with that feud we were having after the reunion tour, I wouldn’t have been able to come to gr...
RATING: 8/10 There’s a lot to be said for some old-fashioned, wholesome fun. At this point in history, however, I would argue that there’s slightly more to be said for screaming “Fuck it!” and listening to GORATORY instead. Always one of the most disgusting bands in death metal, the Boston four piece set the lyrical bar as low as possible, with early bursts of grotesque brutality like “Fisting The Elderly” and “Severed Fuck Stump”, all of which could easily detract from the fact that GORATORY are also one of the most dazzling and singular bands operating at the extreme end of the deathly realm. Admittedly, fans have been made to wait: “Sour Grapes” arrives a full 16 years after its immediate predecessor, “Rice On Suede”...
Power duo Adventure Club have been hard at work in the studio over the past year, cranking out a litany of impressive new singles and collaborations. Their recent works, including “Where We Are” with Bear Grillz and JT Roach and “High Like This (feat. Squired and Dia Frampton)” have fans craving even more from the pair. Now, they’ve returned with yet another emotive melodic bass release. Premiering exclusive on EDM.com today, “Broken Love” is a heartbreaking, bass-heavy offering that enlists the help of vocalist Cammie Robinson. Robinson’s powerful, emotional vocals are lined with cleverly filtered supersaws and pads that give the track an airy ambience within the verses. At the drop, a heavy sub-bass packs some serious pu...
Ray Volpe is hellbent on world domination as of late. With a new single on Excision‘s Subsidia imprint and a recent four-track release on Disciple, it seems that he’s at the top of his game. Returning to Never Say Die with a dual single release, Volpe is now out to prove that statement as a fact. “Insane (feat. fknsyd)” and “Turbo Kid” are two new multidimensional cuts from Ray Volpe, each one showing a different facet of his production prowess. “Insane” boasts a dark and dreamy melodic section, elevated by fknsyd’s vocal work. When the drop hits, screeching stabs and a powerful sub-bass patch provide a landscape that sits somewhere between riddim and trap, and high in the ranks of Volpe’s finest works. “...

After emerging from an eight-month hiatus, What So Not has dropped a completely random, blistering flip of his single “Same Mistakes. Stripping the track of its vocals, which were provided by Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns, What So Not shared a nasty instrumental edit via SoundCloud today. It’s not very long, but it has a ferocious yet minimalistic feel that could serve as a taste of what he has in store in 2021. Back in February 2020, the Australian electronic music virtuoso announced that he was taking a step back from the scene. “I want to pull myself out of the ‘routine’ of it all and make sure everything I do is 110%,” he wrote. He then suddenly resurfaced on October 7th with an Instagram video wherein he previews an unrelease...
Bob Dylan is dipping his toes in the Hollywood waters again. The singer-songwriter will produce Calico Joe, which is a 2012 book by John Grisham about a Chicago Cubs phenom from the 1970s whose life is changed after a near-fatal pitch. The story will chronicle all involved — the batter, the pitcher and the pitcher’s son — in its aftermath. Per the film’s logline, “Calico Joe is a surprising and moving story about fathers and sons, forgiveness and redemption, set in the world of Major League Baseball.” George Clooney will direct the film and will produce alongside Grant Heslov for Smokehouse Pictures. “George and Grant see in this book what I see in it – a powerful story that will resonate with young and old alike. People in all walks of life will be able relate to it, “ Dyla...
The Pitch: As recalled in Daphne du Mauier’s famed 1938 Gothic novel of the same name, our narrator and young, nameless lady’s companion (Lily James) meets, falls in love with, and marries a wealthy, older Englishman and widower, Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), while on holiday in Monte Carlo and returns with him to his lavish Cornish estate, Manderley. She soon begins to notice the long, profound shadow her husband’s recently dead wife, Rebecca, hauntingly casts over Maxim; family and acquaintances; household servants, including cold, austere housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas); and even the animals. As the second Mrs. de Winter grows increasingly frustrated with the strange power her predecessor possesses, even from beyond a watery grave, she slowly begins to learn the truth ...
The evolution of Nine Inch Nails’ 1994 song “Hurt” could warrant an entire oral history. As a slow-burning album closer that later became a staple of Johnny Cash’s repertoire, the song is a piece of music history with plenty of backstory — and now, Trent Reznor will finally explain how “Hurt” came to be for an upcoming episode of Song Exploder, the hit podcast-turned-TV series on Netflix. Earlier today, Netflix announced that Season 2 of Song Exploder will premiere worldwide on December 15th. The Killers, Dua Lipa, and Natalia Lafourcade are a few of the artists scheduled to appear in the next volume. It’s the inclusion of Reznor discussing “Hurt”, though, that feels like the biggest score of all for both fans and Hrishikesh Hirway, the host and executive producer of the show. “I first int...
