In honor of what would be John Lennon’s 80th birthday (Oct. 9) artists including Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, Pete Yorn, Jeff Tweedy and Rufus Wainwright have covered songs from the late singer’s catalog. Tweedy, joined by his son Spencer and Liam Kazar, shared a version of Lennon’s “God,” off the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album, which you can watch below. Elton John is gearing up to release songs from his upcoming massive box set, and he’s gone deep into his archive to uncover songs that have never been publicly shared. That includes today’s unveiling of “Regimental Sgt. Zippo.” In introducing the song, John wrote on Twitter, “From the album that never was… Regimental Sgt. Zippo was going to be the title track of my unreleased debut album in 1969.” It’s different than what you’ve come to expect from the legendary piano man. It has a tinge of psychedelia and a very kaleidoscopic vibe that’s reflected in the clip. The tune is an obvious nod to the Beatles, when you think about it, John and John Lennon becoming pals a few years later makes sense due to the band’s influence on the songwriter. You can check it out below. [embedded content] Elton...
Pierre Kezdy, bassist of Naked Raygun, the Chicago band who was a favorite of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and producer Steve Albini, has died (Oct. 9) at the age of 58. The cause was cancer, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Grohl said he was about 13 when Naked Raygun “changed everything I knew about music,” Lou Lombardo, manager of Naked Raygun, told the Sun-Times. The future Nirvana drummer saw the band at an all-ages show at Chicago’s storied Cubby Bear club. In his Sonic Highways documentary for HBO about the city’s music scene, Grohl says the gig “just turned my world upside-down.” About 30 years later, Grohl asked Naked Raygun to open for Foo Fighters when his band played Wrigley Field in 2015. At the 2013 Riot Fest in Chicago’s Douglas Park, Fall Out Boy invited Raygun frontma...
Nick Cave has been quite prolific during pandemic times, and showing no signs of slowing down, he’s now teamed up with Belgian composer Nicholas Lens on a new opera. Entitled L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S, the two worked on the project at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, since both artists had the time. Lens took inspiration from his cycling trips around Brussels and previous journeys to Japanese temples, a release (via Pitchfork) reported. Cave, who contributed a libretto to the project, said in statement that,“Nicholas called me during lockdown and asked if I would write 12 litanies. I happily agreed. The first thing I did after I put down the phone was search ‘What is a litany?’ I learned that a litany was a series of religious petitions, and realised I had been writing litanies all my li...
It’s an image of contrast: a soldier with dragonfly wings rendered in bleeding graffiti sprays, the literal personification of its title. On the very cover artwork of Linkin Park‘s masterful, ground-moving debut Hybrid Theory, the entire concept is there: loud guitars with hip-hop beats, rap verses between screaming melodic choruses, a test of duality. A hybrid theory. Supplemented with a street-art logo, the cover came to define the visual part of band’s breakthrough era as much as it echoed the sound of the music itself. Released in October 2000, Hybrid Theory became the best-selling album of 2001, capitalizing on the freight train of momentum the band had built from its early live shows and meticulous studio crafting. It’s since become one of the best-selling deb...
“Smoky” is the emo-K-pop crossover we needed. The second single from Monsta X rapper Joohoney’s solo mixtape, it’s a scream-cry, headbanging track that revels in the realization of losing your way. “It’s about me collapsing in the darkness, losing my old self who was so passionate,” Joohoney said in a statement. Your eyes will start stinging when the children’s choir joins on the chorus, and you can hear why Joohoney also says this is “a song for myself in the future,” a reminder of where you’ve been as well as a wake-up call for when you are slipping back. Crank this track all the way up, roll the windows down, and speed down the highway screaming, “Smoky!” with Joohoney. It’s cathartic. —Daniel Head You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates...
Nicky Romero has made the most out of his increased time in the studio this year. The Dutch DJ and producer has released a total of eight original tracks, six remixes, and two EPs (one under another alias) since January 2020. Today, he has returned with his latest single, “Nights With You,” out via Universal Music. “Nights With You” will undoubtedly catch some fans off guard. Nicky Romero has ditched the bombastic, energetic synths listeners can usually find in his tunes and has instead adopted organic percussion, a beautiful piano melody, and a phenomenally written orchestral build-up. The vocals included are incredibly well-executed, adding another layer of depth to his chilled out smash. While “Nights With You” isn’t something t...
Cash Cash have had a monster year. Not only has the trio released an official remix for The Pussycat Dolls, but they’ve also collaborated with Andy Grammer on “I Found You” as well as with Wrabel on “Mean It” and Laura White on “Gasoline.” Today, they’re back with a future bass single featuring Georgia Ku entitled “Love You Now.” “Love You Now” is an upbeat track powered by the signature sound that fans of Cash Cash know and love. Georgia Ku’s passionate vocals take over right from the get-go with melancholic lyrics that play against the overall feel of the song. The drop serves as a moving future bass moment with finely tuned vocal chops and reverberating synths. Cash Cash has found a formula...
Since the announcement of his String Theory EP, Subtronics has kept the hype rolling. Four days ago, the prolific producer first announced the EP and quickly followed up by giving fans a teaser of what’s to come by releasing his collaboration with Wooli a day early. Today, his highly-anticipated EP is finally here. Subtronics’ String Theory EP is a lethal 7-track collection that serves as yet another strong addition to his rapidly growing discography. Per usual, the Philly-based bass maestro has included a number of recognizable samples to pair with his impeccable sound design. While the EP is heavily centered around bass music, there’s no lack of diversity between each tune. Both collaborations on this EP are excellently executed. “Wi...
