After months of live music lockdown, artists are finally stepping outside of their homes and returning to venues. HAIM just played at The Forum, and Trey Anastasio has a Beacon Theatre residency coming up. Sure, HAIM’s performance took place in The Forum’s parking lot and Anastasio’s virtual residency will be audience-free, but the point is the venues aren’t vacant anymore. Now, Tame Impala have joined their ranks and staged their own physical performance in the outside world, as they recently took over a soccer stadium for a two-song set. Kevin Parker and his pared down three-piece version of Tame Impala set up in the center of the pitch at HBF Park in Perth, Australia. They delivered the Lonerism favorite “Elephant” and “Is It True” off their latest full-length, Febru...
Back in June, Denzel Curry lent his fury to the protest song “PIG FEET”, featuring Terrace Martin and Kamasi Washington. Judging by his newest single, “Live from the Abyss”, the Florida rapper is still very much up in arms over our current state of affairs. Although a slow-burning affair production-wise, Curry’s raging bars carry intense heat. “I don’t fuck with my president,” he declares at one point, echoing a majority of Americans. As his anger over Trump and racism mounts, Curry closes the track nearly scream-growling into the mic. “Live from the Abyss” is officially the mood for 2020. Stream the track below. To coincide with Bandcamp Friday, all net proceeds through the month of October will be donated to the protest group Dream Defenders. Its mission reads: “We are an uprising of reb...
Japanese indie pop band CHAI have signed to Sub Pop Records, and are now sharing their first song on the label, “Donuts Mind If I Do”. The track is the latest in a string of singles from Nagoya-based band, following “Ready Cheeky Pretty”, “keep on rocking”, and their Hinds collaboration “UNITED GIRLS ROCK’N’ROLL CLUB”, among others. Compared to their 2019 album Punk, and even their 2017 debut Pink, “Donuts Mind If I Do” has a much more relaxed vibe that might be signaling a new direction for the quartet. Instead of their usual blend of eccentric pop and giddy punk, this tune moves at a gentle sway and is stuffed with ’80s-esque synths and percussion that create a sense of dreamy lushness. The soaring harmonies are sung in the way of ’70s girl groups, but everything else about the song...
Back in March, Hamilton Leithauser introduced us to his new album, The Loves of Your Life, with the lead single “Isabella”. Now, half a year later, the former Walkmen frontman has delivered a new version of the track, this time featuring Lucy Dacus. Originally, “Isabella” was built of a plucky piano and swaying pedal steel, giving it a breezy country-pop feel. This new take started as a simple guitar groove Leithauser was toying with in his home studio, The Struggle Hut. Realizing it fit “Isabella”, he decided to record “a whole new version” of the single. “I guess this amounts to the kind of evolving a new song goes through after a few months on tour… but without the tour,” he said in a press release. A female vocalist also appears on the album version of the song, but for this remake, Le...
Sinéad O’Connor is back with her first song since contributing “Trouble Soon Be Over” to the 2015’s Tribute To Blind Willie Johnson compilation. Her latest song is another cover — Mahalia Jackson’s “Trouble of the World” — with all profits from the song’s sales set to be donated to Black Lives Matter charities. “[F]or me the song isn’t about death or dying,” O’Connor said in a statement. “More akin, a message of certainty that the human race is on a journey toward making this world paradise and that we will get there.” Not only is her rendition moving, but the black-and-white video will move you to your core. Showing images from the Black Lives Matter protests, O’Connor is also seen walking the streets wearing a “Black Lives Matter” sweatshirt and holding a sign wi...

Swedish modern metal force AMARANTHE has just released its new album “Manifest”, via Nuclear Blast. The official music video for the disc’s fourth single, “Fearless”, can be seen below. AMARANTHE comments: “So, we come to it at last! We are so very proud and happy to finally unveil ‘Manifest’ to the world, an album written with so much pure joy and enthusiasm, and yet very nearly did not see the light of day. “When faced with the decision to record the album despite a worldwide pandemic, the answer was the same as when we canceled tours that were supposed to promote the album: we HAVE to release this album in 2020! As our longtime listeners are well aware of, AMARANTHE believes in positive, energetic, and uplifting music, and we feel th...
Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend will release “Order Of Magnitude – Empath Live Volume 1” on October 23, a document of his winter 2019 European tour that saw him taking on possibly his most ambitious live show to date. Today sees the launch of the second clip from the release, and you can watch Devin and the “Empath Volume 1” live band performing the track “War” below. Devin comments: “Hello folks, here’s another song from the ‘Order Of Magnitude’ Blu-ray. “Amidst the chaos of recent times, I look back at this concert as being another world in a lot of ways, and although the DVD has many different feels throughout the concert, this song, ‘War’, is indicative of the beginning vibes of ...
Former RUNAWAYS vocalist Cherie Currie has released a cover of one of her all-time favorite songs, “What The World Needs Now Is Love”. The official music video for the track, featuring Cherie and an all-star band, all filmed separately in quarantine, can be seen below. This timeless classic — written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and originally recorded by Jackie DeShannon — exudes the hopeful message of spreading love into the world with its signature lyric: “What the world needs now is love, sweet love. No not just for some but for everyone.” A message that couldn’t ring more true in these current times. “What The World Needs Now Is Love” was produced by keyboardist/vocalist Dave Schulz (GOO GOO DOLLS, BERLIN, THE SWEET, WANG CHUNG), who select...
This week has already been a banger, and we’ve still got some time with Running Touch later today on SPIN’s Untitled Twitch Stream. That comes after we’ve already seen some sweet sets from the likes of Kelsy Karter, Dot Cromwell, LUNA AURA, and more — all of which you can still catch on Twitch for a bit longer before they move to YouTube. We’re not taking our foot off the gas pedal next week though, as we kick things off with a dual set from Prema777 and iNTeLL (who also happens to be second-generation Wu-Tang Clan). From there, we’ll jump to electronic supergroup Ghost Liotta, our Mexico City favorites in Los Blenders, and a little Mario Kart action from the Paper Jackets crew. You’ll definitely want to stay in touch with us via both Twitter a...
Source: Aldo Chacon / Red Bull Content Pool Paul Wall has been a fixture in Houston Hip-Hop since the early 2000s, and he’s still active as evidenced by his latest venture. Grabbing the spotlight for the latest episode of Red Bull Studio Sessions, the “slab god” himself locked in with a number of producers and studio professionals and created a body of work in a matter of days. For those keeping score, Paul Wall has remained active since in the 15 years since his “Sittin’ Sidewayz” smash hit, releasing the Mind Over Matter album, and a collaborative project with Lil Keke, Slab Talk earlier this year. The potent delivery and easygoing baritone remain intact, but Red Bull cleverly introduced a challenge for Wall by throwing him into the ring of sorts with folks he’s never worked with pr...
Source: @plies / Twitter Plies, the social media savvy rapper from Fort Myers, FL, has a strong message for Donald Trump after the President’s COVID-19 diagnosis. “Ain’t No Corona bih!” The “Shawty” rapper took to social media to mock Cheeto for coming down with the Rona after spending months downplaying the severity of the virus and even disparaging people who dared to wear masks. “This message is for the President,” says Plies. “You fittin’ to quarantine? Quarantine!” Plies goes on to remind Trump (who last we heard has been experiencing mild COVID symptoms) that he doesn’t listen to CDC guidelines and thus needs to get back out there and hold a rally and knock of the MAGA disrespect. In case you’re slow, Plies is being sarcastic. Plies is heard saying things like “Get out the bunker and...
