Watch ASADI Perform a Persian Trap Music Set Live from a Hilltop Overlooking Las Vegas [Q&A]

We may not be able to gather like we’re used to due to the impact of COVID-19, but music will always find a way to bring us together. Last week, Heard It Here First hosted it’s first-ever virtual festival event, Cabin Fever Festival. The fest spanned two days—August 27th and 28th—and raised over $500 towards the Innocence Project, hosting 30+ artists primarily from the bass genre. A delightful exception to this sonic preference came on the fest’s second day, when its headlining act, ASADI, delivered a one-of-a-kind live performance atop a hill near the Las Vegas strip. The Los Angeles-based beatsmith has become a star since storming onto the seen over six years ago. His style of “Persian Trap Music” is a perfect microcosm of the progressive genre fusion of tod...

John Frusciante Shares ‘Amethblowl’ From Upcoming Solo Album

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has shared “Amethblowl,” which is off Maya, his upcoming all-instrumental electronic solo album. The record is dedicated to his cat Maya, who recently died. The guitarist says in a statement, “Maya was with me as I made music for 15 years, so I wanted to name it after her. She loved music, and with such a personal title, it didn’t seem right to call myself Trickfinger, somehow, so it’s by John Frusciante.” Maya is inspired by his favorite music: ’91 to’96 UK breakbeat hardcore and jungle. Listen to the single below. Frusciante left the Chili Peppers following the group’s 2006’s double Stadium Arcadium album. When he rejoined in December 2019 the guitarist replaced Josh Klinghoffer. Pre-orders for Maya are available at Frusciant...

David Byrne Apologizes for Wearing Blackface in Stop Making Sense Promo Video

Ex-Talking Heads singer David Byrne has apologized for wearing Blackface in a promo video for the band’s 1984 film Stop Making Sense. In a series of tweets, Byrne said that a journalist recently pointed out his wearing of Blackface as he portrayed several characters in the promo video. He said he’d forgotten about the video until it was brought to his attention. “To watch myself in the various characters, including Black- and brownface, I acknowledge it was a major mistake in judgement that showed a lack of real understanding. It’s like looking in a mirror and seeing someone else—you’re not, or were not, the person you thought you were,” Byrne said. He pointed out in another tweet that at the end of his American Utopia show he says that he needs to change as well. A filmed v...

Miley Cyrus Jazzes Up Billie Eilish’s ‘My Future’ on Live Lounge

Following her disco ball-swinging performance at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus filmed a set for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, which included a cover of Billie Eilish’s latest track, “My Future.” Surrounded by candles and her masked band, Cyrus brought a jazzy vibe to the pop track that was almost Amy Winehousesque. And unlike Eilish’s light and airy vocals, Cyrus brings some grit and improvised vocals runs to her version of the tune. [embedded content] She also performed “Midnight Sky,” which she performed at the MTV VMAs a couple of days previously. Cyrus also did “Slide Away,” which she brought to the same awards show last year. While it seems that Cyrus is ready to come back with more live-streamed or filmed performances, she did previously perform a couple of times in 2020....

Master P Launches New Food Company to Replace Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima

Earlier this year, food products like Uncle Ben’s rice and Aunt Jemima pancake mix came under fire for their racial stereotypes. Quaker was going to change the logo and Aunt Jemima name since it was based on a “racial stereotype.” Now, Master P is offering an alternative to those products. The No Limit entrepreneur is creating his own brand of Louisiana seasoned rice, beans, grits and pancake mix, aptly titled Uncle P’s. The brand actually launched in March but Master P is doing the press rounds now. “If they made billions of dollars off Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben, imagine how much we’ll make to give back to our own community. It’ll be us helping us without having to wait for the government. We can actually change the world,” the rapper told CNN. “Right now we’re burning down our blocks and...

Miley Cyrus Puts Stunning Spin on Billie Eilish’s ‘My Future’: Watch

One month ago, Billie Eilish unexpectedly released her latest single, “My Future” — a beautiful contemplation of what lies ahead. Now, today (Sept. 1), Miley Cyrus has covered the timely track for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Cyrus — wearing in a black sparking dress and dripping in diamonds — delivered her version with a bit of laid-back rock edge and soaring vocals, though the lyrics about being in love with one’s self and warmly welcoming what’s to come hit just as hard. In some ways, “My Future” is a companion to Cyrus’ own new hit “Midnight Sky” (which she included in her set), in which the pop star sings of being born to run and belonging to no one. While at the Live Lounge, which was adorned with candles and...

BMG Posts Solid First Half of 2020, With Revenue Jumping 4.8% and Streaming Up 26%

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the company says it just had its best first half since launching in 2008. The pandemic-causing economic downturn didn’t slow down BMG as the music company posted a 4.8% increase in revenue to €282 million euros ($310.8 million) at the mid-year point ended June 30, up from €269 million ($303.9 million) in the year-earlier period. But with profit levels holding steady while revenue grew, that resulted in EBITDA margin falling to 17.3% from 18.1% in the prior half year results. The results represent the company’s “...

Miley Cyrus Covers Billie Eilish’s “my future” for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month: Watch

Miley Cyrus for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month (photo by Vijat Mohindra) and Billie Eilish (Amy Price) Days after taking the virtual stage for the 2020 MTV VMAs, Miley Cyrus is back with another pandemic performance. Today, she helped launch the latest edition of BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month with a four-song set that included covers of Billie Eilish and Eagles. Cyrus and Eilish really couldn’t be more different as pop stars, with one known for delivering literal Bangerz and the other for her hushed, alternative pop structures. Perhaps it’s unsurprising, then, that Cyrus’ rendition of “my future” is far more full-throated than the original. Yes, it’s still a delicate piano ballad with a grooving break, but Cyrus ups the defiance in the vocals considerably. Speaking to Live Lounge ...
