IRON MAIDEN Has ‘Been Working Together A Little Bit In The Studio,’ Says BRUCE DICKINSON

British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN have shared a new video message from singer Bruce Dickinson in which he discusses how he and his bandmates have been dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and their plans for the coming months. He said in part: “We’ve all had a bit of a torrid time — everybody in the whole world, MAIDEN included. We wanna be out on tour. “A lot of things haven’t happened this year — that’s blindingly obvious — and it’s very, very frustrating. However, we do have plans. In the meantime, what are we doing? Well, we’re doing bits of writing. I’m talking to Steve [Harris, IRON MAIDEN bassist]. We’ve been working together a little bit in the studio. On what, I can’t tell you, ’cause they’d have to kil...

Dealing With Demons I – DEVILDRIVER

RATING: 8.5/10 With their 20th anniversary only two years away, DEVILDRIVER could be forgiven for being slightly complacent at this point. Firmly established as a regular fixture and widely acknowledged as one of the hardest working bands on the planet, Dez Fafara‘s crew have weathered two decades with credibility intact and a sturdy catalogue backing up their ferocious reputation as a live band. Admittedly, only Dez remains from the band’s very first lineup, but their endlessly malleable take on groove-driven, brutal metal has endured regardless. One listen to the obscene amounts of fun DEVILDRIVER were having on 2018’s “Outlaws ’til the End” suggested that Dez had assembled a refreshed lineup that could breathe plenty of life and fire into the whole th...

DREAM THEATER’s JOHN PETRUCCI: ‘I Don’t Like When Musicians Get Stale Or Kind Of Get Lazy’

In a brand new interview with the “Wong Notes” podcast, DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci was asked if he approaches writing music, producing music and playing music with an an intention beyond just the musicality and the fun of it. He responded (hear audio below): “Definitely. I think that’s a big part of it. You have a couple of different perspectives that you work from or in. One is something that’s very focused and microscopic, and the other is a lot broader. When you’re looking at the whole big picture, what are you trying to say as an artist? What will your legacy be? And maybe that sounds pompous, but it’s just something to keep in mind as you’re doing all this. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, so there’s a ...

‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Tries to Rescue the Presidential Debate in ‘We’re All Doomed’

There was a lot to dislike at last night’s presidential debate. That aside, who better to mock and make things a bit better than “Weird Al” Yankovic? The satirist extraordinaire lent his vocals to a track produced by the Gregory Brothers that accurately lampoons last night’s debate. Playing the moderator — in fact, he should have been the moderator — Yankovic sums up this year’s hellfire and brimstone year to the remixed auto-tuned vocals of the presidential candidates in the aptly titled “We’re All Doomed.” If that doesn’t sum it all up, nothing else will. Speaking and then singing over a dance-tinged beat, he opens the song with the accurate statement/question of, “2020 is a raging hellscape/any ideas on how to stop a worldwide plague?” And you can imagine where it go...

Singer Alex Varkatzas Parts Ways with Atreyu

Alex Varkatzas, photo by Thaib A. Wahab Atreyu have announced that founding singer Alex Varkatzas has parted ways with the band. The metalcore act delivered the news via its social media pages on Wednesday (September 30th), promising that the group “will not disappear.” Varkatzas was Atreyu’s vocalist since the band formed in 1998 in Anaheim, California. His passionate screams were a staple of the band’s metalcore style. In fact, in 2018, Varkatzas claimed Atreyu had invented metalcore, comments that raised some eyebrows in the scene. The band issued a statement on social media announcing the split, which appears to be mutually amicable, though it doesn’t specify any definite reason for Varkatzas’ exit: “We have been a band for over 20 years now. Lived our dreams together as friends and as...

Oscar Isaac to Star as Francis Ford Coppola in Francis and the Godfather

Oscar Isaac will star as Francis Ford Coppola in Francis and the Godfather, a new feature film about the making of — you guessed it — The Godfather. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Barry Levinson will direct and Jake Gyllenhaal will play legendary Paramount head Robert Evans. The Godfather had a famously troubled production history. Evans picked up the rights to Mario Puzo’s book The Godfather for a pittance after learning that Puzo was up to his eyeballs in gambling debt. As he explained in his autobiography The Kid Stays in the Picture, he then offered the director’s chair to half of Hollywood before landing on Coppola. Personally, Coppola didn’t want anything to do with the “sleazy” story, but wouldn’t you know it, he was also deeply in debt. Things didn’t impr...
