The Pitch: When we last saw the super-powered, super-dysfunctional Hargreeves siblings, they had front-row seats to the end of the world — mostly because they caused it. In a last-ditch attempt to stave off the apocalypse, time-traveling Number Five (Aiden Gallagher) zaps the Umbrella Academy back to the past to stop it, only to find out he’s flung his brothers and sisters scattershot throughout different years in the early 1960s in Dallas, Texas. Each of them thinking they’re alone, they try to settle into new lives: Hulking Luther (Tom Hopper) turns to drink, despair, and bare-knuckle boxing; mind-control maven Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) gets married and embeds herself in the budding Civil Rights Movement; knife-throwing bruiser Diego (David Castañeda) is institutionalized; pansex...
Porno for Pyros are back. As promised, Perry Farrell’s ’90s supergroup came together on Thursday night as part of Lollapalooza’s Lolla2020 live stream. Farrell, drummer Stephen Perkins, guitarist Peter DiStefano, and bassist Mike Watt gathered together for an acoustic backyard performance of “Pets” and “Kimberly Austin”. The reunion marked the first time this particular lineup has performed together in over 24 years. Otherwise, the last time the Porno for Pyros moniker was dusted off was when the original lineup featuring bassist Martyn LeNoble reunited for Farrell’s 50th birthday party. Since then, Farrell has teased of getting the band back together to no avail. This isn’t the last we’ll see of Farrell. The Lollapalooza founder has two other special performances in store for the weekend:...
The Lowdown: Alanis Morissette is back! After an eight-year hiatus, one of the ’90s pinnacle pioneers of alt rock is sweeping back into the spotlight with her ninth studio album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road. After four years of work and a three-month delayed release due to COVID-19, the album applies a trademark Morissette treatment — cutting lyrics and a voice that howls and croons and whispers as deftly as an arrow — to questions of adulthood, responsibility, and creativity to greater and more complete effect than what we’d last seen from her. The resulting album is extremely haunting, immaculately polished, and complexly kind. The Good: Such Pretty Forks in the Road finds Morissette exploring the tenuousness of fame, youth, and passion but in a way that thwarts that tenuousness in its...
Affable, good-natured to a fault, the usually upbeat Scotsman Simon Neil reluctantly admits to feeling a tad flustered lately. There’s not much that can bring down this fun-loving frontman for chart-topping rock trio Biffy Clyro, but our current coronavirus crisis and the attendant lockdown has come damned close. He turned 40 last year, having endured several personal upheavals, but he’d spent two studious years composing the group’s reflective new A Celebration of Endings set, their ninth, and six months perfecting it in the studio. “And then just as you’re about to reveal it to the world, the world makes other plans, saying No, you just can’t release this now,” Neil sighs over the phone while explaining the necessary postponement from spring. “And then not being able to bring it to life ...

This is a much more vibrant outlook for female directors than at the Oscars, where two women have never been nominated for best director in the same year. Three women are nominated for best direction at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, which will be presented on Aug. 30 — Taylor Swift for “The Man,” Billie Eilish for “xanny” and Hannah Lux Davis for Doja Cat’s “Say So.” It’s only the second time in the VMAs’ 37-year history that three women have been nominated in this category in the same year—and it’s the first time it’s happened where none of the female directors had a male co-director. Female directors had three of the five nominees in this category in 2005, but only Floria Sigismondi was nominated for a clip she directed by herself—The White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid.” The other t...
Amazon dodged a coronavirus bullet in its second quarter, posting big gains in sales and operating income as shoppers around the world stayed home and did the bulk of their shopping online. The online retail giant, which operates the Amazon Music streaming platform and is one of a small handful of tech companies in the “trillion-dollar club”, reported net sales of $88.9 billion in the quarter ending June 30, 2020, beating analysts’ expectations with a whopping 40 per cent improvement on the same period last year. Also during the period, operating income almost doubled to $5.8 billion, up from $3.1 billion in second quarter of the previous year. Revenue from subscription services ballooned to $6 billion, well advanced from the $4.6 billion reported in the corresponding per...
Alanis Morissette is back, and she has some bright young talent at her side. On Thursday night (July 30), Morissette completed her comeback with a debut virtual performance of album track “Ablaze” on The Tonight Show. Singing from her well-stocked library, Morissette proved she’s the ultimate multi-tasker as the belted out the new number while holding her young daughter and chatting between lyrics. It was the ultimate “rock mom” performance. “Ablaze” is one of 11 tracks on Such Pretty Forks in the Road, which dropped at midnight. With everyone sequestered and self-quarantining due to the coronavirus, we’ve asked our favorite artists to come up with playlists that keep you entertained. Here is Welsh pop-punk band Neck Deep: This is a look into the lyrics, music and artists that have inspired us, especially when we were writing our fourth studio album All Distortions Are Intentional. Alice In Chains – “Them Bones”Straight up one of the best album openers ever. Ben’s was jamming a lot of Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana leading up to ADAI – the spirit of the 90s grunge/alt scene was part of the fabric of the album. The cult indie movie Singles, in which AIC cameo in a club scene, influenced ‘What Took You So Long’. Transit – “Joyride”Hard to pick a song off this record as it’s a favorite of everyone in the band....
When Kenneth Bager and Jez Phunk released “Farmacia (Homage To Frankfurt)” back in 2019, the track instantly became a staple within the world of tech house. It has now caught the attention of legendary techno producer and DJ Carl Cox, who released an official remix of the track today, July 30th. Cox’s take on “Farmacia” dials up the tempo of the original, moving it deeper into the techno realm with a rolling bassline and rhythmic, driving toms and percussion. The atmosphere remains, as does the instantly recognizable, entrancing synth work. Cox’s remix of “Farmacia” is certainly more club-oriented than the original, but respectfully compliments it and retains its signature elements. “I wanted to turn it into s...

During an appearance on yesterday’s (Wednesday, July 29) episode of SiriusXM‘s “Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk”, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich was asked to name a song that, in his opinion, best represents what METALLICA does, both musically and lyrically. He responded: “‘[Master Of] Puppets’ is definitely a very, very, very close to the top choice, because, I guess, it checks a lot of boxes. Obviously, it’s a longer song, it’s kind of a journey, and it’s got the light and the dark, the heavy and the more melodic. So it’s got the many different moods. Obviously, it’s also got an incredible set of lyrics. The lyrics can be whatever you want. And I’ve had conversations with tons of people about different meanings an...
