The Truth Of I May Destroy You Is The Difficult Mess Of Healing

Warning: This story contains descriptions of traumatic events, including sexual assault, which some readers might find upsetting. By Steven Underwood In the eighth episode of I May Destroy You, the harrowing BBC drama brought stateside by HBO Max, the series’s star character, Arabella, played by showrunner Michaela Coel, finds herself looking to the camera, her head wrapped in a colorful scarf, and speaking to a support group for survivors of sexual assault. But what she has to say isn’t heartfelt or healing, but rather a definitive declaration of war against “Bob,” who stands in those who have socialized a deceptive kind of violence. “He’s gone exploring to see for himself what boundaries and violations these women might be banging on about because ‘Bob’s’ thorough… ‘Bob’ found the l...

The One and Only Ivan Isn’t Nearly as Compelling as Its One and Only True Story: Review

The Pitch: Disney’s made the shift once more with The One and Only Ivan, a family adventure drama that was originally slated for theatrical release but has since moved to Disney+. Like many of their classics, this new movie is all about a group of scrappy, heroic animals banding together to go on an epic journey, replete with an A-List cast and computer effects. But does it work on the small screen? A True Story … Kind Of: The One and Only Ivan is a halfway decent live-action/CGI fable that makes a fatal mistake at the very end. Based on the children’s novel of the same name by K.A. Applegate, this film is inspired by a true story of a silverback gorilla who rose to fame as the star attraction of a circus in a suburban American mall all while tapping into his artistic abilities as a painte...
