Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman Excavates His Inner World in None of This Rocks

When you think of Fall Out Boy, the first name you think of probably isn’t Joe Trohman — and he’s perfectly fine with that. But things weren’t always that way for the heavily tattooed guitarist who co-founded the band with Pete Wentz when he was a teenager and has since spent most of his life in Fall Out Boy as they morphed from a scrappy Chicago punk act to one of the biggest pop-rock bands in the world. While Trohman’s memoir, None of This Rocks, deals with him coming to terms with his role in Fall Out Boy and their obligatory career highlights, the book isn’t a rock biography as much as it is a psychological study of the guitarist. It’s the story of someone who’s dealt with clinical depression for most of his life and had a complex relationship with his mother, who also struggled with s...

The 100 Greatest Albums of All Time

It’s Consequence’s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be publishing a series of retrospective pieces encompassing our publication’s own history — and the entertainment landscape in general. Today, we’re kicking it off with our new and improved 100 Greatest Albums of All Time list. Oh my God, we’re back again. It’s been over a decade since we first took a shot at boiling down all of popular music history into the 100 greatest albums of all time. Forget about how opinions have changed over those 12 years — the entire culture has shifted. Even the people taking part in this exercise are different, as only two staff members who were part of the OG list, published in 2010, remain with Consequence today. Understandably, things are going to be different this time. Tastes have bee...

Letter From the Publisher: 15 Years of Sound

Well, we made it 15 years. A decade and a half ago, Consequence was launched with the goal of bridging the worlds of the underground and the mainstream. At that time, the indie music blogosphere was still a vast wonderland of limitless opportunities, where an undiscovered band could break overnight due to a single song upload on Hype Machine. Yet, it was also unwelcoming space for fans of already-established mainstream artists. Coverage of acts like Phish, Foo Fighters, and Beyoncé was all but nonexistent. I started this publication (then known as Consequence of Sound) to provide a platform for likeminded listeners whose iTunes playlist showed no music prejudice. I grew up on Springsteen, tattooed my arm with The Clash lyrics, and soundtracked my wedding to the sounds of Kanye West. At the...

My15: José González Shares the Playlist of Songs That Have Been on Repeat Since 2007

It’s Consequence‘s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be sharing artist-curated playlists that reflect the evolution of their music taste throughout the last 15 years. For today’s inaugural My15 playlist, folk musician José González shares his selections. Since his very first solo album in 2003, José González has operated with patience. His material is never rushed or forced, always heartfelt and honest, and crafted with the utmost care. His most recent LP Local Valley, released back in September 2021, saw the Swedish singer-songwriter retain his usual meditative folk, but with a new emphasis on electronic beats, and even a cover of his band Junip’s song “Line of Fire,” known for its use in promotional materials for Breaking Bad‘s historic finale in 2013. Needles...

‘Pop Idol’ Singer Darius Campbell Danesh Cause of Death Revealed

The death of former Scottish Pop Idol star Darius Campbell Danesh has been ruled an accident. The 41-year-old singer who was found unresponsive in his Rochester, Minnesota apartment on August 11 died as a result of what the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s office determined was “inhalation of chloroethane,” according to BBC News. Chloroethane is also known as ethyl chloride, a colorless, flammable gas typically used in gasoline additives and plastics that is also sometimes used as a recreational inhalant drug. The ingestion of the gas led to respiratory arrest for the singer who first came to fame after finishing third on the first season of the UK’s Pop Idol series, where he landed behind Will Young and Gareth Gates. The coroner’s office listed “toxic effects of chloroethane...

Minimal Oversight and Few Obvious Repercussions Leave YouTube’s Royalty System Ripe for Abuse

Louis Armstrong released “What a Wonderful World” in 1967, and the track eventually made its way to YouTube, like nearly every other recording, where it earns royalties for the single’s owner as well as its songwriters. For roughly a month in 2017, however, about $468 of the song’s publishing royalties made its way to the company Create Music Group, despite the fact that Create did not represent any of the parties involved in the song. Create later said that its claim on Armstrong’s classic, made through YouTube’s online rights management portal, was the result of an error, according to emails shared with Billboard. The mistake was subsequently rectified with a payment to the proper entity. Publishing rights are infamously complicated, and sources from around the music business say YouTube...
