Listen to Lou Reed’s Earliest Known “Heroin” Demo

Light in the Attic and Laurie Anderson have released what is apparently the earliest known recording of “Heroin.” Lou Reed made his demo with John Cale in May 1965. The Velvet Underground’s final version of the song was released on The Velvet Underground & Nico in March 1967. Hear the demo below. “Heroin (May 1965 Demo)” is taken from the archival collection Words & Music, May 1965—out August 26. In addition to “Heroin,” the album features the earliest known recordings of “I’m Waiting for the Man” and “Pale Blue Eyes.” The album also includes a Cale-fronted version of Nico’s Chelsea Girl song “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams,” a song called “Men of Good Fortune” (which shares a title with the Berlin track but has different lyrics and music), and a rarity oft-discussed in Velvet Underg...

Steven Spielberg Directed His First Music Video for Marcus Mumford’s ‘Cannibal’

Marcus Mumford‘s debut solo track, “Cannibal,” has received some very exclusive treatment for its accompanying video. How exclusive? The clip was directed by none other than Steven Spielberg — a first for the Academy Award-winning director. [embedded content][embedded content] Shot only on an iPhone, the video was created by just four people, who Mumford credited in an Instagram post. Spielberg’s wife, Kate Capshaw, was the video’s co-producer, art director and dolly grip, while The Great Gatsby actress (and Mumford’s wife) Carey Mulligan handled costuming and sound. Kristie Macosko Krieger was a producer and the videographer of the behind-the-scenes footage. Mumford identified himself as “some chancer mug” and the track’s performer. “On Sunday 3rd July in a high school gym in New Yor...

System of a Down’s Serj Tankian and John Dolmayan Join Street Band to Perform ‘Aerials’ in Mexico

Members of System of a Down have not been shy about admitting that recent creative differences have halted new recordings and releases by the band, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have fun together. Indeed, System of a Down singer Serj Tankian joined drummer John Dolmayan on stage to perform the band’s”Aerials” at the latter’s 50th birthday party in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico last weekend. [embedded content][embedded content] Dolmayan, who is Tankian’s brother-in-law, had already been playing drums with the rock covers street band Medium at the party on July 15 when the crowd motioned for Tankian to get up on stage. System of a Down’s most recent songs, “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” were released in 2020. Tankian recently confirmed that the band has no plans to release a ne...

Steven Spielberg Directs First-Ever Music Video for Marcus Mumford’s “Cannibal”: Watch

Marcus Mumford unveiled his first solo single, “Cannibal,” last week, but what he didn’t mention at the time was that the accompanying black-and-white visuals had been directed by none other than Steven Spielberg making his music video debut. “On Sunday 3rd July in a high school gym in New York, Steven Spielberg directed his first music video, in one shot, on his phone,” Mumford wrote on social media. He added that Kate Capshaw, who starred as Willie Scott in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and has played the role of Spielberg’s wife since 1991, served as “the almighty dolly grip.” Meanwhile, Mumford’s famous girlfriend Carey Mulligan worked as “Costumer/Sound.” The video itself was filmed with Spielberg holding his phone as Capshaw rolled him backwards on a swivel chai...

Alter Bridge Announce Pawns & Kings Album, Unveil Title Track: Stream

Alter Bridge have announced that their seventh studio album, Pawns & Kings, will arrive on October 14th via Napalm Records. In advance of the release, they’ve unveiled the title track. The band — which features singer Myles Kennedy alongside guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips — worked with longtime collaborator and producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette to create the set, which features 10 new songs. The hard-rocking “Pawns & Kings” is the closing track off the album, with the lyric video streaming below. Advertisement According to a press release, one of the highlights of the album is Tremonti singing leads on the ballad “Stay.” The guitarist heads up his own eponymous band and recently released a charity album of Frank Sinatra covers, so he’s b...

Lou Reed’s Estate Releases Earliest Known “Heroin” Demo: Stream

A demo of Lou Reed’s Velvet Underground epic “Heroin” has been unleashed from the upcoming archival album Words & Music, May 1965. Remastered from an unearthed tape that established the singer-songwriter’s copyright for the composition, it is thought to be the song’s earliest recording. The fuzzy, finger-picked take follows an acoustic folk style similar to the new collection’s initial offering, “I’m Waiting for the Man.” Unlike its predecessor though, which came “nearly complete, with minor changes made in the final arrangement,” “Heroin” seems to have undergone several substantial changes before its visceral debut on 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico. Reed is also joined by fellow Velvet Underground member John Cale for the song’s first recorded runthrough. Stream it below. Wo...

Bruce Dickinson Rips Apart Fan for Lighting Flare at an Iron Maiden Show: Watch

Anybody who’s seen an Iron Maiden concert knows that frontman Bruce Dickinson is a serious and dynamic performer. As one fan discovered on Saturday (July 16th), it’s best to not distract the singer from doing his job. Maiden’s show at Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece, was marred when a fan decided to light a flare during the set. It all went down as the band launched into the iconic “The Number of the Beast.” At first, Bruce took a playful approach to calling out the perpetrator, ad libbing over his own lyrics: “What did I see? A c**t with a f**king flare!” Advertisement Related Video The crowd let out a collective chuckle. But as the flare began to spark and ignite, Dickinson wasn’t laughing, foregoing the lyrics entirely and ripping apart the pyromaniac with a torrent of expletives: “I’...

Tesla Will Soon Integrate Steam on Its Vehicles

CEO Elon Musk recently took to Twitter to reveal that Tesla will soon be integrating Steam onto its vehicles, with a demo to “probably” come next month. For months, Tesla has planned to enter into the video games business. The company has been working on a video game platform called Tesla Arcade for a while, with a dedicated team in Seattle entirely focused on working on video games. At the moment, Tesla already offers a wide variety of games. However, introducing integration with Steam would allow users to access many more games — a feature seemingly possible with the introduction of AMD‘s Ryzen processor and a discrete AMD RDNA 2 GPU, introduced with the newer Model X and S vehicles. This would not only be a game changer for the automobile industry but would set Tesla apart from competit...
