How Accurate is Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis? Here’s a Fact Check

Baz Luhrmann has made a career out of bending time and reality to tell stories with a distinctive melodramatic flair. Moulin Rouge! was full of Parisians circa 1900 singing MTV-era pop songs. William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet featured 20th century American characters speaking in the original play’s 16th century dialogue. Elvis Presley is one of the most mythologized figures in the American imagination, looming over pop culture via Vegas impersonators and conspiracy theories about his death as much as his music. So one might expect Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis to be about the legend, not the man. But Luhrmann, who began work on the film eight years ago, researched Presley’s life extensively, co-writing the screenplay with longtime collaborator Craig Pearce, as well as Sam Bromell and Jeremy Done...

Billie Eilish Slams Internet for Depp v. Heard Obsession: “Who Fucking Gives a Fuck?”

Billie Eilish is nothing if not outspoken regarding current events, and her new song “TV” kills two birds with one stone by expressing disgust about both the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial and the US Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. In a new interview discussing the track, the artist questioned the Internet’s strange prioritization of one case over the other, asking, “Women are losing rights for their bodies, so why are we talking about celebrities’ divorce trials?” Eilish debuted “TV” at a Manchester show earlier this month, shortly after the court’s plans to overturn Roe were leaked. In the song, she sings the line, “The internet’s gone wild watching movie stars on trial/ While they’re overturning Roe v. Wade.” The young pop star explained the origins of the track in an int...

Rage Against the Machine Pledge $475,000 to Abortion Rights

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Rage Against the Machine have pledged $475,000 to abortion rights. The band announced the donation in a June 24th statement. “We are disgusted by the repeal of Roe v. Wade and the devastating impact it will have on tens of millions of people,” they said. “Over half of the country (26 states) is likely to ban or seriously restrict abortion very soon, if not immediately, which will have a disproportionate impact on poor, working class and undocumented BIPOC communities.” Rage continued, “To date, our fans have raised $475,000 from the sale of our charity tickets at Alpine Valley and the United Center. We are donating that money to reproductive rights organizations in Wisconsin and Illinois.” The charity shows — a July 9th date a...

Rage Against the Machine to Donate $475,000 to Reproductive Rights Organizations in Wisconsin and Illinois

In two weeks, Rage Against the Machine will finally kick off their reunion tour that has been over two years in the making. Ahead of their first show since July 2011, the band has a lot more to say than they could have possibly anticipated when they announced their reunion dates in early 2020. In a statement posted on their Instagram account, the band expressed their disgust with Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, the long-standing precedent that protected a pregnant woman’s right to choose to have an abortion. “We are disgusted by the repeal of Roe V. Wade and the devastating impact it will have on tens of millions of people,” the group wrote in an Instagram post. “Over half of the country (26 states) is likely to ban or seriously restrict abortion very soon, if no...

Every David Bowie Album, Ranked

The man born David Jones adopted the stage name David Bowie in 1966, avoiding confusion with The Monkees’ Davy Jones. But then he just kept on adding more aliases to his roster of identities: Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Halloween Jack, The Thin White Duke, the list goes on and on. Had he not been rock’s greatest shapeshifter, Bowie would be remembered for his more subtle musical reinventions, pioneering glam rock but also absorbing and putting his own twists on folk, soul, punk, drum’n’bass, and jazz. Since Bowie’s 2016 death, his artistic stature has only grown, and his voluminous discography has continued to reward close listening. Last year, his shelved 2001 album Toy was finally officially released, and the documentary Moonage Daydream will hit theaters this fall. Meanwhile, one of B...
