Rare Air: LeBron James Joins Michael Jordan As The NBA’s Only Billionaires

HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: Kevin Winter / Getty Lebron James will now be called Billionaire Bron from now on. The financial bible Forbes reports that LeBron James is now a billionaire. The achievement makes James the first active NBA player to accomplish the milestone while still actively playing. He also joins his idol Michael Jordan as one of the NBA’s billionaires. Michael Jordan didn’t achieve billionaire status until 2014, over a decade after he decided to hang up his Air Jordans. According to Forbes, the Los Angeles Lakers All-Star and future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer reached billionaire status after he “maximized his business” by generating more than $1.2 billion in ...

Restaurant Deliveryman Stalked & Killed After Dispute Over Duck Sauce

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Spencer Platt / Getty While mass shootings continue to plague America thanks to a certain political party’s reluctance to enact common sense gun laws, regular gun violence has also been problematic across the board, especially in New York City. According to The New York Times, the latest (and weirdest) arrest due to a gun-related homicide went down this week when police arrested 51-year-old Glenn Hirsch for the cold-blooded murder of a food deliveryman, Zhiwen Yan, back in April. The reason? Duck sauce. We’re not even joking. Last April, Hirsch followed Yan as he left the Great Wall restaurant he worked for to make his deliveries. Angry about not getting a refund he requested months earlier for not getting enough duck sauce with his order, Hirsch waited u...

Dave Smith, Synthesizer Pioneer and “Father of MIDI,” Has Died at 72

Dave Smith, a trailblazer in synth design revered as the “father of MIDI,” has died at the age of 72. Sequential, the synthesizer design company Smith founded, announced his death earlier this week in a statement shared via social media. “We’re heartbroken, but take some small solace in knowing he was on the road doing what he loved best in the company of family, friends, and artists,” Sequential wrote. Perhaps Smith’s most impactful creation was the Prophet-5. Built in 1978 while Smith was in his twenties, the Prophet-5 broke ground on two fronts: it was the first synth with an embedded microprocessor and the first fully programmable polyphonic synth. Prior to the invention of the Prophet-5, synths involved manually adjusting cables and knobs with no way of reproducing exact setting...

Don Diablo Remixes Avicii Classic “My Feelings For You,” Donates Proceeds to The Tim Bergling Foundation

Australia’s Vicious Recordings is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a remix of one of Avicii‘s early career hits. In many respects, Avicii’s “My Feelings For You,” which was released in 2010 prior to “Levels,”could be considered his first breakthrough track. Avicii hardly even had double-digit singles to his name by the time the song sped to #1 on the Beatport charts. “My Feelings For You” also gained momentum and registered on the charts across several European countries—a critical early testament to the potential of Avicii’s euphoric brand of dance music.  The original source material from “My Feelings For You” is derived from Cassius’ “Feeling For You,” a release by the French house g...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Drop Unlimited Love Bonus Track “Nerve Flip”: Stream

Red Hot Chili Peppers are still fresh off the release of their latest album Unlimited Love, and there’s still plenty of love left to go around: Today, the Consequence cover stars have unveiled the song “Nerve Flip” on digital and streaming platforms, after first being released as a bonus track on the album in Japan only. Unlimited Love marked the Chili Peppers’ first album with fan-favorite guitarist John Frusciante since their 2006 double LP Stadium Arcadium. You can hear his spirit throughout the record, and even bonus tracks like “Nerve Flip” showcase why we missed him for so long. A Chili Peppers song through-and-though, “Nerve Flip” layers those chugging, arena-sized guitars with Anthony Kiedis’ often absurdist lyrics — what is “getting high on pink flami...

Eddie Munson’s Dio Back Patch Was Gifted to Stranger Things by Ronnie James Dio’s Estate

Eddie Munson, the breakout character on the new fourth season of Stranger Things, keeps getting more metal by the day. Now, it turns out that the Dio back patch on his denim jacket was actually gifted to the popular Netfilx series by the estate of the late legendary metal singer Ronnie James Dio. We’ve already heard from actor Joe Quinn, who said in a recent interview that he “listened to a lot of heavy metal” to prepare for the role of Munson. Now, the show’s costume designer, Amy Parris, and Dio’s widow, Wendy Dio, have revealed that Eddie’s jacket back patch was created from a vintage t-shirt delivered by Wendy to the show’s costume department. In a Q&A posted on the Netflix website, Parris told the story behind the back patch, saying, “I love Eddie. I think Eddie feels so real. And...
