This week, Harry’s House is finally open, Quavo and Takeoff stop by the “Hotel Lobby,” and Zach Bryan continues a steady rise. Check out all of this week’s First Stream picks below: Harry Styles, Harry’s House [embedded content] Harry’s House is Styles’ loosest, least fussy solo album to date, the sound of an artist in a rarefied pop-star zone comfortable in his environment and not having to worry about any unkempt corners of himself. Harry’s House boasts synths and rhythms designed to soundtrack lazy summer nights, conversational lyrics that revel in personal detail, ballads...

Singer/songwriter Joe Pug has re-recorded his beloved, largely solo acoustic 2008 debut Nation of Heat with a full band, featuring contributions from The Killers’ Brandon Flowers, My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit keyboardist Derry deBorja and singer/songwriter Courtney Hartman. Nation of Heat | Revisited is due July 22 on Nation of Heat Records. Steve Earle penned the liner notes for the new edition of the album, the original version of which was self-released by Pug and turned him into a DIY favorite in the modern singer/songwriter scene. “It’s how I would’ve wanted the record to sound in the first place if I’d had the money and the ability to do it this way,” says Pug of Nation of Heat, which has racked up more than 20 million streams on Spotify. “B...
Bullet-proof vests, helmets, tourniquets, burn kits, trauma kits, gas masks, knee pads, pain medication… I’m one of three people checking thirty suitcases full of tactical gear and medical aid onto a LOT flight from LAX to Warsaw, Poland. There the suitcases will be picked up by men who are unknown to me, men with vans who will drive the aid into Ukraine. One of the vehicles making this trip from Lviv to Warsaw and back was shot at yesterday by Russian troops and one of the drivers was killed. “Someone died trying to get these suitcases,” says Peter Horvath, my friend from the recovery community who’s enlisted me in this operation. Peter is Hungarian, with Ukrainian blood and is a good man. “Hungarians aren’t very smart, but we’re strong,” he says, loading several heavy duffle bags on...

Sirens, shattering glass, and fire extinguishers are the paradigm of Charlie Sloth’s freestyle rap platform Fire in the Booth. While it remains a way to expose up-and-coming artists to mainstream media, FITB is now more of a competitive, no-nonsense, lyrical boot camp that stretches the talents of Britain’s finest wordsmiths, and everyone worth their weight in words wants a go at it. With the world’s biggest hypeman at its helm, gassing up acts as they approach the mic, FITB has become an institution on the airwaves. The likes of Drake, Ghetts, Wretch 32 and Avelino, Kano, Dave, Bugzy Malone and Stormzy have flexed their unscripted lyrical prowess on the show. Yet despite it paving the way for many artists and their subsequent stardom, it all came to an end in 2019, one year after Ch...
