Apple has announced that, after more than 20 years, it is officially discontinuing the iPod. According to a statement, iPod Touches—the last remaining model—will remain on sale through the company’s website, Apple stores, and authorized resellers “while supplies last.” Apple launched the music player in October of 2001 with its original white, rectangular design and click-wheel navigation. Later editions included the Mini, video-capable classic iPods, the Nano, and the even smaller iPod Shuffle. In 2007, Apple launched its first iPod Touch, and, as the company began to introduce other new products—such as increasingly sophisticated iPhones and the Apple Music streaming service—the iPod began to fade in popularity. Why Des Moines Is the Funniest City in America

I don’t want to hear about your local comedy scene. Honestly, it just doesn’t compare. You don’t have people who scrape ice off of their cars and slide out in brown slush just to try out five minutes of new material. If you’re talking about Chicago, it’s expected. When you’re talking about Des Moines, Iowa, it’s insane. For the last 14 years, there has been an enclave of huggable freaks, pukers of truth and go-getters who have made the Des Moines comedy scene the greatest in the country. Around 2007, you would have been lucky to find an open mic, any open mic, happening around there. Des Moines was kind of a dead town. If you did happen to find one, it was usually littered with acoustic guitar music, rancid, amateur beat poetry, and the occasional bit of comedy. When you did find that come...

Apple Discontinues Making the iPod

What a run it was. Apple announced on Tuesday that after 20 years, it will no longer make any new iPods. Though the company hasn’t been making them like it did during its mid-2000s glory years (iPod Touches are the only ones currently available for purchase), it’s noteworthy due to the impact it made during those early file-trading days. It wasn’t the first MP3 player, but it’s easily the most influential. Here’s what Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, had to say about the iPod going away: “Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared. Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’v...

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has now achieved one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s biggest opening weekends ever, but aside from celebrating the film’s success, director Sam Raimi has also spent some time reflecting on his past Marvel-related project, looking back at why 2007’s Spider-Man 3 received more mixed reviews than the previous two installments of his trilogy. Speaking to Fandom in a recent interview, Raimi was asked about Tobey Maguire‘s now-infamous dance sequence after he was infected by Venom and began transitioning into a darker version of Peter Parker. “Well, we meant it to be funny, actually. It was Peter Parker’s version — this lame kid — of what it must be like to be his evil self. But he’s so whipped,” the director explained. “He’s so out of it ...

Eileen Chan, DJ and Singapore Nightlife Pioneer, Found Dead at 32

Eileen Chan, a champion of Singapore’s underground club scene, has reportedly passed away in Berlin at the age of 32. Chan was a power player in the Singaporean nightlife sector. A founder of the music promotional company The Council and co-owner of the music venues Headquarters and Tuff Club respectively, Chan wore many hats. For that reason, the impact of the businesswoman and DJ’s career is difficult to quantify into words, but her legacy certainly lives on in the vibrant scene she helped foster.  Chan’s commitment to the underground was unwavering. “The idea of Headquarters was simple, we wanted a no-frills kind of place where people could come enjoy themselves and have a good night out, a place where people don’t feel like they need to dress up o...
