By Joshua M. Miller Yola Carter is done going through the motions. With the release of her sophomore album Stand for Myself, the British-born singer-songwriter who performs spirited roots soul music as Yola makes it clear she’s comfortable in her own skin. Produced by The Black Keys’s Dan Auerbach, the confessional album reads in part like a mission statement of her journey the past eight years seeking to get back to her roots and her truest self. When her mother died in the fall of 2013, she realized she had been sleepwalking through life. “I feel that prior to my mother’s passing in 2013, that I was a little bit of a doormat version of myself,” Yola tells MTV News. “I wasn’t really fully living in my truth or in my actual personality. I had been minimizing myself.” From the o...
With their cover of the 1998 classic “I’ll Be Missing You,” international superstars BTS leave an emotional mark on the BBC Live Lounge. With a song so emotionally charged (penned in remembrance of legendary rapper Biggie Smalls) and wholeheartedly beloved by a generation, the Bangtan Boys had the eyes of the world on their stage. But as expected, the group delivered a riveting performance expertly executed. While still paying homage to the original, the addition of rappers Suga and J-Hope’s Korean verses, as well as Jimin’s angelic vocals, added some artistic flair to the performance, while fellow members RM, Jin, V, and Jungkook held it down with the English rap, melody, and ad-libs. Touching the hearts of music-lovers around the world, BTS’s performance further proves that music is univ...

It’s been almost eight years since Baauer and RL Grime joined forces for 2013’s “Infinite Daps,” a song that has stood the test of time as a trap classic. They’re now back with a new single called “Fallaway,” which arrives under the cloak of their new audiovisual project HÆRNY. “Fallaway” is a departure for the trap music vets, but that doesn’t make it any less groundbreaking. They’ve gone the drum & bass route here, producing a frenetic, radiant banger as the genre’s stateside explosion continues. RL Grime and Baauer have both operated at the bleeding edge of electronic music for nearly a decade now and this track is yet another reminder of their trailblazing approach to sound design. Check out the new collab...

Opening night headliner Miley Cyrus perhaps said it best when she referenced a lyric from “Malibu” — “Hoping I just stay the same and nothing will change” — after performing the track. “The reason why that wish is outlandish and ridiculous is because everything will change — it’s inevitable,” she told the densely packed crowd at the south end of Grant Park. “And I think it was a very humbling experience for all of us to be humanized together and experience the last year and a half, where we were all experiencing the pain of being disconnected, and I think we remembered the value of having one another in our lives. And I think the masks reminded us how much a stranger’s smile could really mean to us, because sometimes, we take that s— for granted.” The star continued to sh...

One of Hollywood’s most notorious wrecks is getting raised from the depths. A TV sequel series to the beloved 1995 critical flop Waterworld is being developed by the film’s original producers. John Davis and John Fox confirmed the news in an interview with Collider, saying that director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, the next Predator movie) is already onboard. “We’re not 100% sure on the approach to the show. But definitely, we’re in the building stages right now,” said Fox, noting that they’re expected to lock in a writer “over the next couple of weeks.” The plot will reportedly pick up with the same characters from the film 25 years later. Waterworld was set in future where polar ice caps had completely melted, covering all the Earth in ocean (prescient, n’est pas?). K...
