Anthrax’s Charlie Benante and DMC Team Up on New Charity Collab

Over the past few months, artists have been getting creative with bringing live performances to their fans. Anthrax’s Charlie Benante has been doing just that and has recently collaborated with DMC of Run DMC, Suicidal Tendencies bassist Ra Diaz and former Anthrax / current Volbeat guitarist Rob Caggiano on a new track. Benante revealed that he’s always wanted to play a Run-DMC medley. So he arranged it back in March, and “CB’S RUNDMC JAM” was born. Charlie explains more about how this music came together on the song’s Bandcamp page, which can read below. “I always wanted to do a medley of RUN DMC songs, so back in March I decided to put an arrangement together and asked these amazing people to be a part of it. How can you do a RUN DMC medley without the KING of ROCK- Darryl McDaniels DMC....

Georgel’s Pride Playlist Is a Celebration of Black Queer Artists

In celebration of Pride Month, Mexican singer-songwriter Georgel is honoring and amplifying black queer artists who have inspired and empowered him throughout his career. The “Que No Nos Importe” singer shared exclusively with Billboard his ultimate pride playlist, which includes songs such as “Pink + White” by Frank Ocean, Todrick Hall‘s “Boys” and RuPaul’s “Cover Girl,” citing the drag star as “the Oprah of gay culture in my generation.” During Pride Month, the openly gay singer also took to social media to commemorate the Pulse nightclub shooting victims who died four years ago. In a poignant and heartfelt post, Georgel calls for unity and peace. “It was the biggest massacre of the century again...

Twitch Users Are Getting Takedown Notices En Masse for the First Time: Here’s Why

A flurry of copyright takedown notices hit Twitch users last week, causing a storm on social media. Here’s what’s really going on and what to watch for next. Over the last week, users on gaming-focused livestream platform Twitch received a sudden flurry of takedown notices for clips of old videos using unlicensed background music. The more than 2,500 notices — which the RIAA filed on behalf of rights holders for recordings including Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” and DNCE’s “Cake By The Ocean” — caused a storm on social media, with users complaining on Twitter they felt blindsided by the requests, some for clips dating as far back as 2017. Contrary to some users’ claims, Twitch’s Music Guidelines — which explicitly prohibit users from incorporating music into their streams wit...

Anthrax, Run-DMC, Suicidal Tendencies & Volbeat Host Charitable Jam Session

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and Suicidal Tendencies bassist Ra Diaz virtually linked up with Run-DMC‘s Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and Volbeat guitarist Rob Caggiano to perform a medley of rap and rock hits for a good cause. Benante praised McDaniels as the “KING of ROCK” in the video description of his highly anticipated six-minute jam session, which consisted of Run DMC’s “It’s Like That” and “Sucker MCs” from the hip-hop group’s 1984 self-titled debut LP and Anthrax’s “I’m The Man” titular track from its 1987 EP. The latter is still considered to be one of the first rap-rock hybrid songs. He made the combined virtual cover available for download on Bandcamp so the proceeds would go toward&nb...

With the help of nearly 200 people from all of over the world, including artists like Thalía, Juanes and more, Jesse & Joy are declaring “love is our language.” Today (June 15), the Mexican-American duo released the “Love” music video to speak out against violence toward the LGBTI+ community and raise awareness about conversion therapies that to this day take place in Mexico and other parts of the world. “Our music will always be there to remind you that you are beautiful just as you are,” the Mexican previously said about the song, included in their recently-released album Aire. “It’s called ‘Love’ and talks about love being the universal language, the language that all of us should speak.” Toward the end of the video, the message is loud and clear: “...

The Outlaw at 50: Our 1988 Interview With Waylon Jennings

This article originally appeared in the January 1988 issue of SPIN. Waylon Jennings was born on June 15, 1937. In on honor of what would have been his 83rd birthday, we are republishing the interview here. “You’re gonna get in trouble if I write this.” “I don’t care. You write what I tell ya.” Waylon Jennings, looking more like an outlaw biker than a cowboy, is dressed in black except for his nylon racing jacket. His trademark black hat never leaves his head. He turned 50 this year and he looks it. He also looks healthy, if weathered. There is no sign of his 20-plus-year addiction to pills and cocaine. He chain-smokes. He’s slightly nervous, but becomes more relaxed as the interview progresses Waylon is in New York, a city he first visited as one of Buddy Holly’s Crickets, to promote ...

Rammstein Working on New Songs While in Lockdown

Rammstein would have been in the middle of a European tour right now had it not been for the pandemic, but the industrial metal veterans are not sitting around twiddling their thumbs. Instead, the legendary German band is working on new music. In an interview with Germany’s “Bosshoss” podcast on Rodeo Radio, drummer Christoph Schneider was asked what the band has been up to during the lockdown. Schneider responded, “Last week, we were supposed to play our first 2020 concert and then we said, ‘Let’s meet and think about what we could do this year.’” He continued, “We still have so many ideas lying around, so many unfinished songs. We met and we’re working on new songs. We want to work on songs, but whether it’s going to be a new record, nobody knows.” It took Rammstein roughly 10 year...

Penny Lane from The Beatles Song “in Danger of Being Renamed” over Possible Slavery Ties

As the Black Lives Matter movement continues to surge worldwide, citizens and governments alike are being forced to reconsider monuments to heritages of racism. In America, everyone from GWAR to Taylor Swift is calling for the removal of confederate statues, with one petition proposing they be replaced with ones of Dolly Parton. Meanwhile, over in Liverpool, England, folks are seeking to rename the famed Penny Lane — immortalized in the classic song by The Beatles — over its purported connection to the slave trade. It seems many believe the road was named for James Penny, a slave merchant who spoke against abolition in Parliament. Last week, as protests over racial injustice and inequality gripped the country, signs for the street were defaced and graffitied, with “racist” being sprayed ab...

Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge Now An Actual Playable Game

Boredom is at an all-time high thanks to the ongoing quarantine, so perhaps now is the best time for the world to finally experience Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge. The Simpsons joke game has been turned into an actual playable online simulation. The original Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge game was referenced in “Marge Be Not Proud”, a season 7 Simpsons episode that aired in 1995. Its storyline focused on Bart, who was caught attempting to shoplift an expensive and violent Mortal Kombat-style game called Bonestorm. In lieu of Bonestorm, Comic Book Guy suggests Bart purchase a cheaper and extremely dull alternative: Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge. In the episode, Carvallo is voiced by Dan Castellaneta, the actor who also plays Homer. <img data-attachment-id="1044878" data...

An Oral History of Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Feature artwork by Cody Schibi (Purchase Prints + More). Few movies are written with a sequel in mind. That is, of course, if you have a franchise planned, in which case you’re being both ambitious and presumptuous. Even rarer is a movie that demands a sequel. Sure, there are a few rare gems that manage to further the storyline, or at least retain some of the magical elements that made their predecessor work so well. But, more often than not, sequels just feel like a retread and another sign that Hollywood is running out of ideas. Gremlins 2: The New Batch is an exception to that rule. In 1989, director Joe Dante was given complete creative control by Warner Bros. to followup 1984’s Gremlins — and he milked that control for everything it was worth. There’s breaking the fourth wall in an on...
