You know how most people manage to map out their memories around major life events (such as a wedding, a birth, meeting their partner, buying a new house etc.)? Well, as a beauty editor whose life revolves around testing and trialling every skincare launch that comes my way, I find it far easier to remember things by using skincare launches as my cues. Take for example last week, when my boyfriend asked me what year we moved out of our last flat. While he was convinced we made our move in late 2017, I know for a fact it must have been late 2018, as I specifically remember a bottle of Drunk Elephant serum sitting on my skincare shelf in the bathroom – and Drunk Elephant wasn’t a thing here in the UK in 2017. And while this skill seems totally useless, it has its benefits – mainly when...
Black Friday can be an assault on your email inbox, with every brand you’ve ever purchased from sending alert after alert about offers and promotions. It’s enough to make you want a full-blown digital detox. So, we’re arming you with essential tips to help you find the best clothing and fashion deals and avoid falling into any tempting clothing sale traps. When it comes to shopping for clothes, shoes and accessories during Black Friday, you want to find classic pieces that have been slightly out of reach previously, or hard-working basics that are missing from your wardrobe (such as a new winter coat or ankle boots). Joy Montgomery, Who What Wear UK’s shopping editor, advises to only buy “something that was already on your shopping list before it was on sale....
Surely all lipsticks are the same right? Well no, unfortunately they’re not. After trying nearly every lipstick around, there’s one that I always come back to. Of course, it’s Charlotte Tilbury. I don’t know if it’s the signature rose gold packaging or the old Hollywood style but I’m into Glamour with a capital G, so therefore I’m very into Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks. It’s not just style over substance though as one Matte Revolution Lipstick is sold every minute. That’s a whole lot of lipstick, and while the instantly recognisable Pillow Talk shade is in the beauty hall of fame, the formula itself is where all the good stuff is. A matte lipstick that’s comfortable to wear without looking chalky and easy to apply with the angula...
Leggings are the one item we can guarantee that you’ll find in any woman’s wardrobe. Which is why we’re dedicated to finding the coolest styles, newest trends, and innovative ways to wear all your favourite pairs. From yoga class to our daily walks and everything in between, leggings are our go-to piece to cosy up in (and still look cool doing it). And while we wish there were endless ways to wear them, the fact is that their body-hugging shape looks best when paired with some length for a necessary balance. The one piece that makes wearing leggings alone totally doable? A long sweater or cardigan. The trick is to look for knits that are longer than the average, hitting about mid-thigh. Luckily, there are plenty of worthy options out there and we’ve sifted through them so that you ca...
Much like everyone in the world, I’d quite like 2020 to be over sooner rather than later, thanks very much. I don’t think I’m generalising when I say that this year hasn’t been the best. So then, you’ll forgive me for looking ahead into the new year and the new season fashion trends to have something to look forward to. On the agenda today is the best new boot trends for 2021. While I’m aware that most of us are set with our footwear for winter right now, there are some genuinely exciting boots trends for the new year. As boots are now a year-round item, they’ll work perfect for spring/summer 2021 with summer dresses but excellent for the colder weather too. Below, there are three key looks I’ve identified from the upcoming collections. While there isn’t anything totally groundbreaking, w...
Yep, we all know that one person who looks as if they’ve stopped time. They might be in their 30s to 40s but easily look like they’re a 20-something. Maybe they even ID’d. Call it what you want, but I’d venture to guess that there’s someone in your life who’s managed to negate the natural effects of aging in one way or another, and we’d be lying if we said it didn’t absolutely intrigue us. No matter what age you are—or whether you’re even concerned with “ageing”—it’s near impossible not to be curious about how these people have managed to Benajmin Button right in front of our eyes. One such example is Caroline Labouchere, a grey ambassador and model whose glowy, flawless complexion has stopped me in my scrolling track...
As an editor of a fashion website, I spend a lot of time reporting on new trends, new labels and new ways to wear things. However, sometimes you really never can beat a classic, and it’s arguably more important to build a wardrobe that you’ll love for years, if not decades. Thinking of the longevity of your purchases not only is a way to have a more sustainable approach to fashion but will also help you to carve out a style that is timeless and feels truly you. The idea of a capsule wardrobe created a real buzz around 2014 when a number of industry figures promoted a compact closet built of pieces that all perfectly match. There are some items that we think will always rise high above trends, making them the perfect pieces to invest in and add to your capsule (or not-so-capsule...
Dressing for winter in the UK is no easy feat, though there is something distinctly British about knowing how to put together a great outfit despite all the elements—some of us even enjoy the challenge. Between the stormy gales and a high likelihood of rain, there are myriad factors to consider when it comes to getting dressed each day during the winter. However, those of us who call this place home have spent years perfecting the outfit formulas we know will keep us warm, dry and of course, looking stylish. When it comes to staying warm and chic celebrities tend to be just as savvy as the rest of us, and many of the UK’s leading fashion lights also champion the very same hero pieces we rely upon to survive the season. From double-breasted wool coats that will keep you cosy on your ...
Whenever I tell someone that I didn’t have a shower in my house until I was in my late teens, they’re always incredibly shocked. What can I say? Both my mum and I loved baths, so we never really felt the need to reconfigure our entire (relatively small) bathroom to fit an unsightly cubical. As far as I was concerned, showers were an oddity. That was until I started working and the shower my mum had finally permitted my stepdad to install came in especially handy when I was running late (which, admittedly, was just about every day). Now that I have a bathroom all my own—with a shower and everything—I still prefer to soak than stand. I have a bath almost every night, particularly in the winter months. A bath is a perfect way to unwind after a stressful or busy day or to warm you...
It’s easy to forget, but trust us when we say that hair trends have come on leaps and bounds in the last 15 or so years. Nowadays, more often than not, we know exactly what we want when we sit down in the salon chair. Whether it be hand-painted balayage, rogue blonde, or a glass bob, we’re more clued up on the intricacies of hair techniques than ever before. But let us not forget where this all started. Cast your minds back to when every salon appointment started with you handing over a picture of a celeb torn out of a magazine. Soon enough, we picked up on new terms—things like “inverted bob” (VB, you owe us for the cold necks we suffered), “babylights,” and, perhaps the most frequently uttered words in salons throughout the ’90s and early noughties, “feather...
There are two things that I have zero time or energy for: packing my own suitcases (I find that someone will always help me) and doing my nails. I don’t know if I just lack coordination, but it always ends up looking a mess. So when I do sit down to do my nails myself, I need my manicure to last beyond two business days. A reward is necessary for all the time and labour I put in, and thanks to Parisian nail brand Manucurist, there’s finally a reward. The brand has just launched in the UK, and its Green Flash Kit (£69), which is the first and only plant-based alternative to gel nails, has me seriously impressed. I was skeptical, of course, as I really don’t like the faff of gel nails and having to go back to the salon to remove them. Plus, I was curious to see how their g...
What’s been said about French style that hasn’t been said before? Well, not much, really. Our Gallic neighbours, especially in the capital city, are exceptional dressers. They just know style. It’s as if they are born with it. Their innate understanding of what looks chic is unmatched, and while I know it can seem a little tiresome that we bang on about French fashion, we have a good reason: it never goes out of style. Today’s history lesson on la mode a la Francaise is the loose-fitting shirt. Thanks to French fashion designerJacquemus’s Bahia tie-front shirts, I’ve been re-thinking the huge-collar trend and thinking about opting for this classic look as worn by French women for years. Jeanne Damas wearing a white shirt during Paris fashion week. From women such as Jeanne Damas, as well...
