Alexa Chung Just Created the Perfect Modern Update On the Pretty Woman Dress

As far as iconic film and pop-culture fashion moments are concerned, few could forget Julia Roberts’ very memorable brown polka dot dress in Pretty Woman. The outfit has been remembered and referenced for decades, solidifying the look as a truly timeless ensemble. So timeless in fact, we’re still talking about it 30 years after the film premiered.  In a modern-day take on that iconic look, this season Alexa Chung released a few polka-dot midi dresses of her own, as a part of her most recent collection. Using a nearly identical print to the Pretty Woman iteration, Alexa’s dresses have been updated for 2020, featuring completely modern silhouettes with collars or v-neck detailing. The Headlining Looks From LFW That Will Impact How We Dress In 2021

It might not be the frenetic, fast-paced weekend of year’s past, but over the last few days, London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021 has taken place through a series of virtual events and small, in-person press previews.  Leaving behind the spectacle, the hoards of attendees and the street-style circus we’ve grown accustomed to, this new take on fashion week has acted as a reminder of what the event is truly about: the clothes. From Burberry to Victoria Beckham, Molly Goddard to Simone Rocha, British brands proudly displayed their latest work, proving that innovation persists even through uncertain times.  For some brands we saw a heightened importance placed on the concept of escapism, creating collections filled with bright, cheerful prints and wh...

I Just Discovered This Little-Known Brand, and It’s Made the Perfect Jacket

I can tell, without looking at that little activity tab on Instagram that tells me how much time I spend on the app, that I spend too much time on the app. That said, if I did stop the scrolling, I might not stumble across gems such as Jess Meany‘s Instagram account. She’s a designer who produces the most beautiful patchwork jackets I have ever seen, amongst other items. The one-of-a-kind pieces are often pastel hued and are loosely tailored, unstructured jackets that are exactly the kind of garments I’d love to wear this autumn. I could blame the pandemic and our new love of wearing items that are less restrictive, but I actually think there are other elements at play. For a while now, I’ve been looking for more interesting pieces that I know I&...

If You’re Looking for a Forever Coat—This One Is Always a Wise Investment

There’s no doubt that the world of fashion is prone to more than just a bit of hyperbole. You’re “obsessed” or “in love” with a particular item. Everything is “fabulous,” “chic” or “iconic.” In truth, while you probably do love that fuchsia bejewelled headband right then and there, its lasting wardrobe potential is quite minimal (sorry, Blair Waldorf). But there are a few pieces that make the cut and deserve all the above over-the-top descriptions lobbied at them. One such item (or rather items) are the coats Max Mara designs for women. The Italian fashion house has created a long list of coats that really can only be described as iconic. Not only is the classic camel colour flattering for all skin tones, but the shape...

Respect The Pioneers: GORE-TEX Inventor Bob Gore Has Passed Away

Source: George Frey/RETIRED / Getty If you ever wore clothing specifically made for the outdoors then you need to take a moment of silence. The father to one of the greatest fashion inventions is no longer with us. As spotted on High Snobiety Bob Gore, the inventor of GORE-TEX, has passed away on Thursday, September 17. In 1969 Bob Gore stretched heated rods of polytetrafluoroethylene and created expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. His discovery of the right conditions for stretching PTFE was a happy accident, born partly out of frustration. Instead of slowly stretching the heated material, he applied a sudden, accelerating yank. “I decided to give one of these rods a huge stretch, fast, a jerk and it stretched 1000%” he said. After some more testing he introduced it to the public under...

The Denim Trend Victoria Beckham Is Backing for 2021

This week London Fashion Week has been reimagined, with small in person presentations and most shows and collections being shown digitally. Victoria Beckham was planning to host a small salon show for 15 people, however she cancelled this at the last minute saying that it no longer felt appropriate, instead sharing a video and images of the spring summer 2021 collection on her Instagram account today.  This collection was designed during lockdown, and is a tighter edit, with a total of twenty outfits, compared to the forty something shown last season. This streamlining has meant there is a focus on the core elements of the Victoria Beckham brand—throw-on beautiful dresses, elegant, classic tailoring and oversized shirts. Colour is used to add vibrancy, with pockets of lilacs...

Alesha Dixon’s Black Lives Matter Necklace on Britain’s Got Talent Is a Positive Show of Support

Britain’s Got Talent presenter Alesha Dixon used her style to support Diversity’s much talked about dance performance. The former Mis-Teeq singer wore a BLM (Black Lives Matter) necklace for last week’s Britain’s Got Talent semifinal to show solidarity with fellow judge and Diversity dance group founder Ashley Banjo. Banjo and ITV received a record level of complaints to Ofcom after Diversity’s impactful performance recently aired on BGT. The performance reflected the state of the world in 2020 and opened up some difficult but essential conversations about progress and unity. As Banjo explained in an Instagram video, Diversity’s performance for BGT addressed “everything from lockdown, to COVID, to the incredible NHS, to the spotlight that’s b...

Michelle Keegan’s New Very Collection Makes It Easy to Give Your Autumn Wardrobe a Stylish Revamp

This month, actor Michelle Keegan has once again teamed up with Very on a womenswear collection. Since partnering with the e-retailer back in 2017, the actor has launched both clothing and homeware, offering everything from sequins dresses to fringed lampshades. Her autumn/winter 2020 collection, which dropped on 14th Sept., marks the 22nd collection she’s worked on with the brand — a task Keegan takes very seriously. The Brassic star sees the range through from the initial sketches to the final product, with the designs inspired by pieces from her own wardrobe or by her personal style icons. When it comes to designing the pieces in the range, in a behind-the-scenes video for the collection Keegan explained how she “keeps thinking about how I’ll wear that when I’m o...

Victoria Beckham’s Spring 2021 Collection Has Us Dreaming of Drawstring Dresses

Victoria Beckham‘s Spring/Summer 2021 digital fashion show was hosted at North London’s Victoria Miro art gallery, where she had initially planned for an in-person showcase, but rescheduled days before the event as it seemed inappropriate. Moments before the show streamed, Beckham explained that the new VB woman is modern, forward looking, and always dreaming. The new collection is “a dream inspired by reality,” as she puts it, and introduces a relaxed fluidity to the strong tailoring and sharp colour that defines the brand. Ahead, we break down the standout looks and design trends that we will be wearing in 2021. Victoria Beckham SS21 is one of the brand’s most relatable collections to date. Beckham took current fashion trends like drawstring dresses and patc...
