I Moved to London Over A Decade Ago—This Is How It Changed My Style

Coming to the UK as a teenager from Singapore wasn’t just an adventure; it was also a chance for me to develop a whole new look. My hometown is better known now for being the setting of Crazy Rich Asians, but back then it felt more like a sleepy backwater than a style destination. In any case, I was too busy using my fingernails to discreetly liberate imported magazines from their security bags in Borders – the bookstore with the biggest supply of imported fashion titles on the island – to notice. I’d smuggle British Vogue, The Face, Dazed & Confused and i-D to the aisle for children’s books and plough through every single issue sat on a made-for-kids floor cushion, ignoring the death stares of five year olds.  These days, I can afford to buy my own magazines, but I’ll never forge...

Zamfara schoolgirls kidnap: President Buhari has failed Nigeria – Wole Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka on Saturday said the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigeria after terrorists abducted hundreds of school girls in Zamfara State. Soyinka spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Ogun award lecture and public presentation of ‘Chronicles of the happiest people on earth,’ the latest book authored by him. According to Soyinka, it is important for all to know that these were abnormal times, but that it seemed to him as times of shirking of responsibilities in key areas. “We cannot permit ourselves to accept the child hostage taking as a way of life, we just can not continue in this fashion, some thing drastic and meaningful has to take place and it has to be collective,” he said. Soyinka emphasised that ...

I’ve Been Wearing Running Leggings for 10 Years—These Are the Best

In what will be absolutely no surprise whatsoever, gym wear has seen a boom in the past year. There were reports that the UK could “even face shortages” of sports shoes, trainers and leggings thanks to high demand during the pandemic. Clearly we all became fanatic about working out this past year when it has been one of the only activities we can do. Luckily, as I already run outside, I had my kit ready to go, and I now consider myself something of an expert in what to wear. I’ve been running for over a decade, and so I’ve already honed my running gear down to certain pieces and brands that I rate (including one of the best sports bras I’ve ever worn). Today though, I want to tell you about the best running leggings around—Nike’s running l...

We Just Tried the New Haircare Range From the Stylist Behind Alexa Chung’s Bob

When it comes to hair inspiration, there’s one woman that always springs to mind for chic, low-maintenance hairstyles: Alexa Chung. Yes, ever since she landed on our TV screens almost 15 years ago, Alexa has pretty much been my hair muse. Beachy waves, sweeping fringes, choppy bobs—I’m here for every one of her hairstyles because, let’s be real, Alexa’s hair always looks amazing. However, there’s one trademark hairstyle that has basically become the signature look for cool girls everywhere: the undone bob. The handiwork of none other than beloved British hairdresser, George Northwood. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined what a dating should be. Wole Soyinka to Nigerians: Don’t accept child hostage taking as a way of life

Following the Friday abduction of over 300 school children in Jangebe in Zamfara State, Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Saturday warned Nigerians against accepting kidnapping of school children in parts of the north as a way of life. Soyinka who lamented that the government and security agencies have failed Nigerians, said he did not know what else to recommend as panacea to the nation’s “abnormal times.” The octogenarian playwright spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, at the ANA Ogun award lecture and public presentation of ‘Chronicles of the happiest people on earth,’ the latest book authored by him. The event was put together by the Association of Nigerian Authors, Ogun State chapter in collaboration with Abeokuta Club. The 524 page book was launched by foremost indigenous ...

I Think These 17 Items Make the Perfect Capsule for Summer 2021

We might not be out of puffer coat season just yet, but as soon as Boris Johnson announced the road map for the lifting of restrictions, my mind was wandering straight to thoughts of picnics in the sun, afternoons in beer gardens and the summer dresses I’ll be wearing for this re-entry into society. It seems like I’m not alone as at least half of the memes I saw were talking about outfit planning for June 21st—one excellent tweet I saw compared the level of outfit planning for June to deciding what to wear for a year six disco.  So it might not be officially spring just yet, but I can’t help but think forward to summer and start plotting the few pieces I’m going to be adding to my wardrobe. Below I’ve listed the 17 items that I think are a welcome ad...

I’ve Tried Hundreds of Nude Lip Products, But These 2 Are the Best for Dark Skin

From my late teens to my twenties, as my penchant for beauty started to develop, there was one brand that became my go-to for pretty much all things makeup: MAC. From their iconic Studio Fix Fluid Foundation with a sweep of a Mineralize Skinfinish for my base to a bright flush of colour on my cheeks courtesy of Fever powder blush, so many of my staple products were from there. Understandably though, as I started to work in the beauty industry, my product selections widened and my daily makeup routine begrudgingly had to diversify. However, there’s one thing that’s never deviated from MAC in all this time and that’s my favourite nude lip combo. Why? Because MAC make some of the best nude lipsticks in the industry. You Deserve to ...

This Jacket is Over 60 Years Old, but Still Feels Modern

You know when a fashion trend manages to span more than a decade that it’s something to take note of. But 60 years? That really is on another other level. Coco Chanel created the first iteration of her iconic boucle jacket back in the 1950s; inspired by menswear tailoring, it featured the signature contrasting trim, boxy fit and logo buttons, and to this day it remains a firm favourite in the fashion hall of fame. 7 Affordable Dress Brands That Are Also Sustainable

Whether it’s renting, upcycling, shopping secondhand or buying from conscious companies, these days there is a myriad of ways we can all become more sustainably minded-consumers. However, with so much information and so many ethically-conscious brands around, often it can be hard to know where to begin. A simple Google search for sustainable fashion brands yields about 255 million results, and while that is in no way a negative thing, it can all feel a little mind-boggling at times. But, don’t worry—that’s where we come in.  If we were to examine brands that are more considered in terms of their fabrications, manufacturing process and supply chain, at times the word ‘sustainable’ can also equate to ‘expensive.’ That is...

The Influencers Who Always Find Expensive-Looking High-Street Pieces

Finding the best pieces on the high-street is hard work, even for editors whose job it is to do so. With so many websites and new-in sections to cover, it takes dedication and, quite literally, an entire team to ensure we don’t miss an incredible new drop or a soon-to-be bestseller as we scroll. Another method we use to ensure we see every high-street piece going? Instagram. There’s a handful of influencers who we religiously follow solely for their loyalty to the high-street (something we have in common), and we thought it was high time we shared them with you. Whether it’s uncovering the sleekest minimal items from Arket, spotlighting expensive-looking wardrobe essentials from H&M, or unearthing the next cult buy from & Other Stories, these i...
