From the sneak peeks I’ve seen, Julien is extremely well versed in fashion—those cast photos on the Met steps just drove me wild. But you can tell that Julien and several of the other characters are wearing really current fashion and designers. Julien is wearing knee-high Schutz boots with her Constance Billard uniform, and there’s that stunning Christopher John Rogers gown. How do you think these styling elements reflect Julien’s power of influence? Does it mean she’s literally a fashion influencer? That is the vibe. Julien has just such a natural air about her that she’s become almost like an accidental influencer. Like, she just happens. She’s also extraordinarily wealthy and well-connected. So you know, there’s that, but she just has this natur...
The sun has made a much-anticipated appearance this week, meaning we can finally do our winter-to-summer switchover. No item signals the arrival of sunshine quite like a pair of sunglasses, and this year’s trends really are the finishing touch to any outfit. From ultra classic styles to ’70s squares, there is no shortage of wonderful frames to choose from. Investing in an expensive pair of sunglasses can be a big commitment, especially if, like I do, you have a habit of losing or sitting on your precious shades. However, when I have bought expensive sunglasses, I have not only treated them with extreme care but also been sure to select shades that I will be excited to wear every day for years to come. If you’ve decided to treat yourself to a designer pair of sunglasses, the...
Daisy Lowe makes up a particular part of the British fashion crowd. Mates with Alexa Chung and Nick Grimshaw as well as everyone else belonging to that pack, she’s always spotted on the front rows of the coolest runway shows such as that of her pal, designer Ashley Williams. The model has been working since she was 2 (yes, really!) and has racked up quite the CV, which includes being selected to model for Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld and securing major gigs for Marc Jacobs and Topshop. She also models for Burberry, Dr. Martens and Converse. There are few major brands she hasn’t worked with in some capacity, quite frankly. It’s, then, quite easy to make the assumption that she knows her fashion and has amassed quite the collection in her wardrobe. Often sp...
On top of its design-driven in-house brands, the roster of womenswear labels housed at John Lewis has expanded this year. There are more emerging and independent brands to discover, like Kemi Telford and Albaray, as well as high-street favourites like Hush, making it a great place to shop for everything in one place. There are cute separates, lots of excellent linen and some very chic relaxed tailoring. But the hero of John Lewis’s new summer drop has to be the dress. Especially when it comes to planning for all those upcoming summer occasions. You just can’t beat a perfect dress with a great pair of sandals to make you look and feel your best again. Here, we’ve picked out 11 of our absolute favourite dress and sandal combos from John Lewis’s huge...
Summer colour trends are a bit of a given, aren’t they? Yellow, pink, green—these are shades that return in one way or another every warm-weather season. Don’t get us wrong. There’s nothing we love more than a joyful colour palette, but what we find even more interesting are the summer prints that come out to play this time of year. Print trends are way more unpredictable than colour trends. Yes, you can always expect to see florals, but how they’re going to be interpreted that season is anyone’s guess. (Spoiler alert: This year is all about retro, ’70s-style blooms.) Then, there are checks. After years spent favouring gingham, now everyone in the know has become borderline obsessed with checkerboard. These are perhaps the two dominating print ...
Fancy a taste of the French riviera with an Italian twist? Well, Christian Dior‘s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri is giving London just that. This summer, the French fashion house is taking over Selfridges’ Alto rooftop restaurant to create a dining experience inspired by Monsieur Dior’s favourite food, drinks, and the brand’s new resort collection Dioriviera. Dior at Alto is currently taking booking for summer 2021, with a limited number of walk-ins available during opening hours from Monday to Saturday (12 p.m.-11 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.-10 p.m.) The menu includes stylish mains, desserts, and cocktails, of which we are keen to try the decadent Plateau de Fruits de Mer special for two (£80) that boasts a seafood spread of fresh crab, prawns, oysters, langou...
The 21st of June is set to be the most exciting day of the year for summer fashion. According to the UK government, all legal limits on social contact are planned to be lifted by 21 June, and we can meet as many of our friends and family anywhere we want. So naturally, we need the perfect outfit to remind the world — and ourselves — of the wonderful joy of getting all dressed up. After spending the past year indoors rotating the same elasticised waistband joggers, we are buzzing for colourful and elevated outfits. Whether you define your personal style as bold, classic, sporty, or sexy, we’ve found great outfits that are easy to copy and will inspire you to be confident with your summer looks. Some of our favourite all-in-one outfits for the summer are slip dresses and floral midis w...
American ecommerce site Etsy is buying London-based fashion resale app Depop for an impressive $1.63 billion (£1.13 billion) as reported by the New York Times, which means that the vintage, handcrafted, and secondhand fashion markets are expecting a major boom in the coming years. Etsy was founded in Brooklyn in 2005 and has since established itself as the go-to online shopping destination for vintage and handmade goods and art and craft supplies. In 2015, Etsy went public on the stock market and joined NASDAQ’s composite index, which includes companies like Apple, Tesla, Amazon, and Facebook. Etsy’s acquisition of Gen-Z fashion app Depop is a bid to connect with younger customers who share Etsy’s interest in vintage and secondhand fashion from independent merchants, sell...
Costume design is this really interesting area where fashion and entertainment meet. Series like Gossip Girl and The Handmaid’s Tale, and films like Clueless and The Devil Wears Prada, have had a major impact on how we dress. We’d love to credit Blair Waldorf for the recent revival of headbands. And if it weren’t for Miranda Priestly, would we ever know the difference between turquoise and cerulean blue? Fashion’s dynamic relationship with pop culture is undeniable. For the past couple years, we’ve experienced a very nostalgic ’90s style renaissance. Even icons of the era, like Keanu Reeves and Celine Dion, are getting in on the action. So, we decided to try out Rachel Green’s great style from one of the decade’s most defining series, Friends...
Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, has advocated the use of Hijab by Muslim women, without restrictions and in total observance of the freedom of religion in the country. The Sultan, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), stated this in Birnin Kebbi, on Tuesday, at the North West Zonal Public Hearing on the Constitution Review organised by the House of Representatives for Stakeholders from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara. Abubakar wondered why the wearing of the Hijab would be a problem for others who were not using it, stressing that the other religions could also be encouraged to adopt what their religions ordered them to do. “The most important issue is the issue of religion. Almighty God created us to worship Him and you m...
Auné London is the coolest multibrand store of 2021. Don’t believe us? Ask Beyoncé. The music icon was spotted wearing one of Auné’s in-house sustainable mesh dresses this past April. If you, like us, have missed out on the chance to grab a coveted design from the perennially sold-out brand, then you’re in luck because Auné is hosting its first-ever pop-up store in Shoreditch for May bank holiday weekend. In addition to Auné’s in-house selection of sustainable mesh dresses that will be available for preorder at the pop-up, the brand will be selling some equally eclectic and hard-to-find pieces from independent designers and vintage suppliers. Our favourite brands making an appearance at Auné’s Shoreditch pop-up include: crystal couture pieces by Frances O, sex...
Poster Girl founders Natasha Somerville and Francesca Capper (Daniel Sachon) Are you familiar with Poster Girl? The London-based online boutique founded by Francesca Capper and Natasha Somerville is creating the hottest dresses of summer 2021. We first fell in love with Poster Girl’s skintight signature dresses after Rowan Blanchard shared a photo on Instagram wearing the brand’s Charlotte dress in autumn 2020. But with nowhere to go at the time, it wasn’t until spring 2021 that stars like Dua Lipa, Kylie Jenner, Selena Gomez, and Doja Cat started to catch on to the brand’s “bold and bodacious” designs. With Poster Girl set to be one of the It brands of summer 2021, we spoke to the designers about how a pair of red stilettos decided their friendship, the...
