TV Asahi‘s All-Nippon News Network has just reported some interesting occurrences taking place on the historically significant island Iō Tō (Iwo Jima). The island’s name translates to “Sulpher Island” and gets its name from the sulfurous gas that the island vents out — many have reported that the island smells of rotten eggs. With the eruption of the underwater volcano Fukutoku-Okanoba back in August, a small island was formed. A day later, Nishinoshima volcano, located some 800 miles south of Tokyo, erupted. Facebook Messenger is adding “group effects” that allow everyone on a video call to participate in the same augmented reality experience at the same time. The effects are available now across Messenger video calls as well as Messenger Rooms, the service’s Zoom-like videoconferencing feature, and are coming soon to Instagram, the company says. There are over 70 group effects available at launch, including a game where players compete to build a virtual burger, and another where a virtual orange cat photobombs the call. Microsoft has selected AMD as its exclusive PC partner for Halo Infinite. While this means plenty of marketing opportunities, it’s also fostered a closer engineering partnership with AMD that Microsoft says will improve frame rates in the campaign mode and eventually bring ray tracing to the game. “We’re looking forward to working closely with AMD to bring raytracing to Halo Infinite,” says Noah Benesch, a product marketing manager at Xbox. “Raytracing is one our top development priorities post-launch and look forward to sharing more soon.” It’s not clear if this rules out Microsoft using Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology, but Microsoft does note that AMD is “exceptionally open to us bringing new rendering features across all hardware as well as performance improvemen...

Local officials in Las Vegas have now approved Elon Musk‘s The Boring Company to build a new tunnel system underneath the city. The transportation firm has been working on its plans for Las Vegas for several years now and currently runs a smaller tunnel system underneath the city’s main Convention Center, but its newly approved plans are much more ambitious. Dubbed the “Vegas Loop,” the new tunnel system will span across 29 miles and offer 51 different stops for passengers on board its Tesla vehicles, covering popular locations including various hotels and casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, the new football stadium, McCarran International Airport and of course, the Las Vegas Convention Center. It’s available to testers in the Beta Channel version of Windows 11, which means you’ll need to opt into the Windows Insider program to get access. Soon, though, Twitch may have a solution to that problem, as it’s currently testing a new Rewind the Stream button with some users.
