How to make the most of your iPhone’s accessibility features

Apple offers a lot of accessibility options for the iPhone. Having difficulty seeing things on your iPhone? Make them bigger. You can also make them brighter (or less bright, or even differently colored if you have a form of colorblindness). You can even make them less migraine-inducing, or have Siri read and describe everything on your screen to you. If you need help when it comes to hearing sounds and voices on your iPhone, you can adjust audio dynamics, read transcriptions, or have your iPhone flash a bright light when you get a call or a notification. Maybe you prefer a different way to control your iPhone. You can customize touch gestures — or even use the AssistiveTouch feature to use single taps where more complicated touch gestures might otherwise be needed. You can integrate perip...

MTN is Planning to Buy Telkom

MTN Group is reportedly in talks to buy its telecommunications rival Telkom. According to Bloomberg, the company said the discussions are still at an early stage and there is no certainty that the transaction will be completed. The news that was announced on Friday morning instantly saw Telkom’s share price soar by 30%. “Shareholders are advised that MTN and Telkom SA SOC Limited [Telkom] have entered into discussions in relation to MTN acquiring the entire issued share capital of Telkom in return for shares or a combination of cash and shares in MTN,” MTN said in an announcement. MTN would pay for the partially state-owned company in shares or a combination of cash and stock, according to a statement the giant telecommunications company released on Friday morning. According to Moneyweb, n...

Closer Looks: Nothing Phone (1)

The global release for the highly anticipated Nothing Phone (1) is fast approaching and here’s your chance to take a closer look at the brainchild of OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. Retaining much of Nothing’s signature design language, the new Phone (1) features a transparent back paired with an aluminum frame to offer a retro-futuristic look while enabling the company’s innovative, 900-LED Glyph Interface to shine through, allowing you to see who’s calling or texting, your battery life and more. The main display comes in the form of a 6.55-inch OLED screen with HDR10+ support and runs at 120Hz to provide crisp, fluid imagery and coverage of one billion colors. Powering everything is a custom-made Snapdragon 778G+ chipset from Qualcomm specifically for the Nothing Phone (1). The chip include...

Today I learned Amazon has a form so police can get my data without permission or a warrant

Here is something I didn’t know when I purchased Amazon Ring cameras and Amazon Echo Dots: there is a webpage where law enforcement can fill out a form, say there’s a life-threatening emergency, and get access to your data without your consent, a court order, or any kind of warrant. There’s nothing in the Terms of Service about this, and the company has maintained for years that it helps police get consent first, but it’s happening anyhow. Over the past seven months alone, Amazon has provided private Ring videos to law enforcement 11 times, the company told Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) in a letter dated July 1st and provided to press this week. Here are Markey’s questions and Amazon’s answers about that specifically: (Markey is focused on Ring, which has its own specific form (pdf) that law en...

Giant NFT marketplace OpenSea lays off about 20 percent of its staff

OpenSea co-founder and CEO Devin Finzer revealed this afternoon that the NFT marketplace is laying off about 20 percent of its employees. Finzer did not indicate how many people that represented. A Forbes article in January celebrating Finzer and his co-founder Alex Atallah’s $2.2 billion net worth (each) said the company employed more than 70 people, but an OpenSea spokesperson tells The Verge that 230 people will remain with the company. When we profiled OpenSea in February, the company had just received an additional $300 million in funding with a valuation of $13.3 billion and was the dominant player in selling the tokens, earning a 2.5 percent commission on trades. Still, a sustained drop in activity and prices has led to headlines about how NFT Sales Are Flatlining or have Fallen Off...

Wordle is being turned into a multiplayer board game

The hit online puzzle Wordle is being turned into a multiplayer board game. The New York Times, which purchased Wordle earlier this year, is partnering with Hasbro to bring Wordle from the digital world to the physical one as Wordle: The Party Game later this year. Wordle rose to prominence in large part because, at least for a little while, it seemed like literally everyone was sharing their results on Twitter. But actually solving a Wordle puzzle is generally a solitary endeavor. In Wordle: The Party Game, though, Wordle becomes a group activity. One player thinks of a five-letter word that other players have to try and guess first. Once people have made their guesses, the word-thinker will slide translucent yellow and green tiles over correct letters. You’ll make your guesses with dry-e...

Hyundai imagines a grim future where metaverse ‘artists’ live in their cars

New car events are usually pretty cringe, full of pointless pyrotechnics, emotionless futurescapes, shameless pandering to “the youth,” or hapless CEO antics. (Remember Elon Musk’s Cybertruck window smash fail? Simpler times.) So it is with some degree of hesitation that I must point you to this video from Hyundai as the latest exhibit in this ongoing series of “car companies present depressing visions of the future.” The video, which was released yesterday, was intended to reveal the sleek-looking Ioniq 6, Hyundai’s latest electric vehicle with a 77.4kWh battery and 379 miles of range. Instead we got a smorgasbord of buzzwords — “trashion,” metaverse, NFTs — ideally aimed at appealing to a youthful demographic, but going about it in the worst possible way. car companies present depressing...

It’s ChromeOS now, not Chrome OS

Chrome OS, Google’s Linux-based operating system for its Chromebook devices, has been around for more than a decade, but the company has made a small but notable branding change: it’s now called ChromeOS, with no space in between. James Croom, Google’s senior director of marketing for ChromeOS, confirmed the change to The Verge. You can see the change for yourself all over Google’s ChromeOS dev page (though the official logo at the top appears to have a lowercase c.) That’s three entire spaces saved just in this screenshot. (And four if you count the logo.)Screenshot from Google’s ChromeOS dev page The change hasn’t rolled out everywhere just yet. On this ChromeOS page on Google’s Chromebook site, for example, Google still spells the operating system as two separate words. According to Cro...

Instagram Is Allowing Creators To Lock Posts and Reels Behind a Paywall

Instagram has expanded its creator subscription program, introducing new ways for users on the platform to generate an income. Through the program, which launched in January, Instagram is now allowing creators to lock even more of their content behind a paywall. The platform’s Subscriptions feature previously only applied to Lives, Stories and Badges. Creators determine a set monthly subscription cost of up to $100 USD maximum and followers sign up to subscribe via a button on their profile. Subscriptions are now also applicable to Reels, Posts, Chats and a special subscriber-exclusive homepage. CEO Adam Mosseri announced the update in a video posted to social media. “Subscriptions are a great way for creators to have a predictable income and for fans to get exclusive content from creators...
