Like some of the best trends in fashion’s history, I have a funny feeling that my favourite summer style may well divide the crowd. Crochet has undoubtedly had a tumultuous relationship with the shopping public over the years: Originally regarded as merely a cheap alternative to lace, crochet was championed as a valuable “make do and mend” technique during World War II, however, it was in the swinging 1960s that it took on a life of its own in the fashion world.
It was also during this decade that the iconic “granny square” started to proliferate, manifesting on everything from crop tops to cushions, which is fitting considering that in recent years crochet became increasingly synonymous with a certain twee, OAP aesthetic. It’s had a tough old time.
