Johnny Depp’s big Hollywood comeback comes in the form of Ebenezer, a new take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol from filmmaker Ti West (X trilogy). Coming from Paramount Pictures, the film marks Depp’s first major studio project since a multi-year civil battle with Amber Heard over allegations of domestic abuse and defamation. (Depp was ultimately victorious in the suit.)
In Ebenezer, Depp stars as the titular Scrooge alongside a cast that also includes Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, Daisy Ridley as Emily Cratchit, Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley.
The first trailer premiered at Comic-Con on Thursday and is streaming below. For anyone pining for Depp’s return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, he appears to be playing virtually the same character in this film, except he’s swapped his sword, beach braids, and bandana for a top hat, scarf, and grey scruff.
