Lin-Manuel Miranda Announces The Warriors Broadway Musical

Lin-Manuel Miranda Announces The Warriors Broadway Musical

Way back in August 2023, Lin-Manuel Miranda announced plans to adapt The Warriors into a stage musical. Well, now is the time to bust out those sweat leather vests as Warriors will finally debut in spring 2027.

Warriors sees Miranda reunite with actress/playwright Eisa Davis for the book, music, and lyrics inspired by both the 1979 film and Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel. The show, directed by Jenny Koons and co-directed and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, follows the titular New York street gang as it makes its way from the Bronx to southern Brooklyn over one harrowing evening.

“With Warriors, we take a fateful journey through New York City full of heart and grit as our characters fight to survive,” said Miranda and Davis in a statement. “Musicalizing such a vibrant world for the concept album has been a thrill, and now we’re coming out to play on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne. We can’t wait.”

Warriors also features scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Jason Crystal, projection design by Hana S. Kim, music supervision by Kurt Crowley, and orchestrations by Kurt Crowley, Scott Wasserman, and Mike Elizond.

As mentioned, Miranda and Davis previously adapted Warriors as a 2024 concept album (that was also gender-swapped). Executive-produced by Nas, the record features performances by Ms. Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, Marc Anthony, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, and Kim Dracula, among many others. That record hit No. 1 on the Billboard Compilation Album charts in it first week.

Warriors rounds out something of an unofficial “New York Trilogy” from Miranda. His first Broadway musical, of course, was In the Heights, a love letter of sorts to the Washington Heights neighborhood in Upper Manhattan. Even his magnum opus, Hamilton, is set in New York, following the titular Founding Father as he arrives in the then-colonial city.

Previews for Warriors begin in March 2027, with the opening at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre then slated for April. Stay tuned for more news on the full cast and remaining creative team in the coming months. Tickets will go on sale in October via WarriorsMusical.com.
