Mercedes-Maybach Launches Its First Plug-In Hybrid

Mercedes‑Maybach has revealed its first-ever plug-in hybrid, the S 580 e, as part of Mercedes’ larger electrification plans which saw the electric G-Class revealed last year. With a legacy that stretches back to 1909, Maybach founded by Wilhelm and Karl Maybach became a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz in 2015. The Mercedes‑Maybach S‑Class in particular was first introduced in 2021, and has grown steadily in demand since.

“With our first plug-in hybrid model, we are combining the luxury experience typical of Maybach with emission-free local driving when in electric driving mode. The Mercedes‑Maybach S 580 e represents a pivotal step in the transformation of our heritage brand into an electric future. We will present our first fully electric model as early as 2023,” writes Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes‑Maybach at Mercedes‑Benz Group AG.

The hybrid drivetrain allows for an even quieter cabin experience, gliding along with zero local emissions on pure electric mode. Subtle eectric-specific features include concealed charging scoket on the left side of the vehicle, blue color accents in the headlights, and battery charging state indicators in the instrument panel.

The basis of the hybrid drive runs on a highly-efficient six-cylinder engine from the current petrol generation delivering 367 horsepower with reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The combined sytem output generates 510 horsepower and maximum torque of 440 Nm with a 0-62 mph time of 5.1 seconds. An optional 60 kW DC charger is capable of delivering a full charge in approximately 30 minutes.

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e will release first in China followed by Thailand, Europe, and other regions. More details can be found here.
