Netflix is officially moving forward with its highly anticipated reality competition series based on the legendary board game, Monopoly. The streaming giant has officially greenlit the live-action adaptation and kicked off the casting process, setting an unprecedented multi-million dollar cash prize for the ultimate winner.
The newly greenlit production comes alive after an intense industry “bake-off” that saw approximately 50 production companies vying for the prestigious development order. Ultimately, The Traitors producer Studio Lambert won the rights to steer the television project alongside Hasbro Entertainment. The competitive format will feature 12 distinct contestants arriving on completely equal footing before entering a massive, life-sized, and “fully realized” Monopoly Town Square. To survive the cutthroat environment, players must navigate high-stakes negotiations, tactical asset trades, and strategic dice rolls to accumulate a massive fortune or risk losing everything.
The streaming platform’s confidence in the unscripted project was heavily bolstered by the astronomical commercial success of the mobile game Monopoly Go!. The intense engagement within mobile gaming sectors convinced executives to acquire the large-scale television concept. The Monopoly reality competition series is officially scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix in 2027.
