While there is no one way to pull off a Valentine’s Day–worthy nail design that will earn you nonstop compliments, celebrity nail artist Elle Gerstein finds nail art with cat-eye hearts, micro sequin hearts, and jelly hearts particularly stunning. “These three techniques are all about layering and depth, and that’s the difference between 2026 cat-eye; it has a lot of 3D texture and depth by doing the layers and adding the sequins,” explains Gerstein. She tells Who What Wear that these designs bring light, depth, and textures to new designs. Olha Shtanhei, a professional international nail artist, highlights the refined, intentional, and emotionally expressive nature of this year’s nail trends.
“We’re seeing a strong move away from novelty hearts and overt themes toward designs that feel romantic through texture, color, and detail,” Shtanhei explains. Soft micro-art, such as minimal heart outlines, abstract curves, or negative space designs, offers a modern look. Elevated French manicure variations will also be on the rise. “Think soft blush bases with tonal red tips, sheer milky finishes with delicate metallic lines, or subtle ombré fades,” she says. While almond and soft shapes will continue to dominate, enhancing the elegance of these looks. “What really defines standout Valentine’s manicures now is restraint,” Shtanhei adds. “Romance is expressed through finish and balance, not excess decoration.”
How Will This Year’s Trends Be Different?
Shtanhei tells us the biggest shift in the Valentine’s Day nail designs we’ll be seeing this year is emotional maturity. In previous years, she tells us the holiday’s nail looks leaned playful or themed, with bright reds, obvious hearts, and glitter-heavy designs, lending to a date-specific design. “In 2026, Valentine’s manicures are designed to last beyond the holiday,” says Shtanhei. “They’re romantic, but also editorial and versatile, something you’d wear to dinner, work, or fashion week.”
As for aesthetics, she explains these nail trends are influenced by runway beauty and minimalism when it comes to architecture, finish, and tone. “Rather than saying ‘Valentine’s Day’ at first glance, these manicures feel romantic,” she continues. “That subtlety is what makes them modern and why they resonate so strongly with today’s fashion-conscious audience.”
