Moonage Daydream, a cinematic trip into the psyche and legacy of the iconic David Bowie, has been out in theaters for a week now, and director Brett Morgen confirms that mind-altering substances are being enjoyed in those theaters. “It’s happening a lot,” he tells Consequence via Zoom, a few days after the unconventional documentary’s IMAX premiere. “I’m having people come up to me at the end of screenings lit and tripped out.” Officially authorized by the Bowie estate, Moonage Daydream uses decades of archival footage to craft a visually-driven look at Bowie as an artist, from the Ziggy Stardust days to the more grounded, yet still ethereal, man he eventually became. Given the beautiful visual soundscapes designed by Morgan, blending animation and music and color to capture the essence of...

The Pitch: Bobby Lieber (Billy Eichner) is a successful pillar of the gay community in New York City: He’s got a popular podcast, he’s the director of what’s soon to be the nation’s first LGBTQ+ history museum, and he was just named “Cis White Gay Man of the Year.” The only thing missing is a man in his life, but Bobby isn’t into all that: “Love is not love,” he stresses early on to his friends, rejecting the oft-used gay rights sentiment as a lie to get straight people to treat queer folks like human beings. Instead, he chips away at one awkward Grindr hookup after another. But fortune changes when Bobby runs into hunky estate lawyer Aaron (Luke Macfarlane) at a club; they each clock the other as angry and boring, respectively, and their shared fatigue for the performative, ima...
Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, GloRilla and Cardi B join forces for a hard-hitting collab. Cardi B has always been a generous collaborator, and now she’s hopped on the remix for fast-rising Memphis rapper GloRilla’s hard-hitting track, “Tomorrow.” The two artists are a natural fit, with aggressive rapping styles and the ability to tear through sparse beats based on shit-talking and charisma alone. Produced by GloRilla’s frequent collaborator Macaroni Toni, “Tomorrow 2” brings out the best in both of them. GloRilla, who broke out with her vir...
Dead & Company will head out on their final tour in 2023. The announcement follows earlier speculation that the supergroup would cease touring after their recently concluded summer trek. “Word travels fast and we wanted to be the first to let you know that Dead & Company will be hitting the road next summer for what will be our final tour,” the group shared in a social media post revealing the tour poster. “Stay tuned for a full list of dates for what will surely be an exciting, celebratory, and heartfelt last run of shows.” In his own post, Bob Weir added, “Well it looks like that’s it for this outfit; but don’t worry we will all be out there in one form or another until we drop…” Advertisement Related Video Back in April, Weir pushed back against a report that Dead & Com...

Over the past two weeks, we’ve been celebrating Consequence’s 15th anniversary with a series of rankings, staff lists, essays, playlists, questionnaires, videos, and other retrospectives taking the pulse of a decade-and-a-half of culture. And while it’s been a lot of fun to take a stroll down memory lane, we now want to turn the tables and ask you: What have you been obsessed with these past 15 years? After all, there would be no 15 years of Consequence without our loyal audience, a community of music, movie, and TV lovers who are literally the reason we do what we do every day. To that end, we’ve come up with a simple Consequence 15 Readers Survey. It shouldn’t take too long to fill out, but we want your honest takes. Who knows, we might even share some of the most fun responses on ...
Taylor Swift is set to headline the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show, according to Variety. Citing “three sources close to the situation,” Variety reports that Swift will take the stage during Super Bowl LVII on February 12th, 2023 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. It’ll mark her first time headlining the halftime show. Earlier on Friday, Apple Music was announced as the new presenting sponsor of the Super Bowl Halftime Show, replacing Pepsi. Because of the timing of the announcement — at 12:00 a.m. — fans took it as a hint that Swift would be performing (her new album is titled Midnights, after all). What’s more, the pop singer has a longterm relationship with Pepsi’s chief rival, Coca-Cola, which would have prevented her from headlining past halftime shows. Related Video Las...
Less than a week after debuting it at Riot Fest, post-hardcore supergroup L.S. Dunes have dropped their new single “2022.” It’s the latest preview of their debut album Past Lives, which is due out in November. L.S. Dunes are fronted by Circa Survive’s Anthony Green with My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero, Coheed and Cambria’s Travis Stever, and Thursday’s Tim Payne and Tucker Rule. When they debuted the track at Riot Fest, Green described it as “the most fucked-up song I ever wrote.” “2022” actually appeared on Green’s most recent solo album Boom. Done. before being removed from streaming services a month later and being reworked as the opening track on Past Lives. “If I can’t make it ’til 2022,” Green sings over a wall of swirling guitars. “At least we’ll see how l...
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of their seminal third album Dig Me Out, Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker are preparing to release Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album. Ahead of its October 21st release date, the band have shared the album’s full list of collaborators, offering a preview today with Courtney Barnett’s take on “Words and Guitar.” A few of the names contributing to Dig Me In aren’t surprising at all: The band’s frequent collaborator St. Vincent will put her own spin on “Dig Me Out,” while fellow Pacific Northwest indie legends Wilco will take on “One More Hour,” and teenaged riot grrrls The Linda Lindas will offer their rendition of “Little Babies.” Elsewhere, we’ll hear chameleonic indie duo Low perform “Dance Song ’97,” Margo Price p...
In his later life, the French philosopher Jacques Derrida trained his critical lens away from abstract conceptions of human language and toward his pet cat. How should he feel about returning his cat’s gaze? Should he feel ashamed to let his cat see him nude, vulnerable, on the toilet? If animals cannot express a moral code—if they don’t know that nudity is shameful—are they simply amoral? To Derrida, that’s the wrong question—it’s not whether animals can think, but rather if they can feel. Throughout his enigmatic discography, Alex Giannascoli, who performs as Alex G, has teased out these same thorny issues. On 2012’s Trick, his dog Rosie communicates with just her eyes. Two years later, on DSU, his dog Harvey “doesn’t understand what big boys do,” but Alex loves him anyway. And while the...
