A Halloween classic is finally getting its long-awaited sequel 29 years later. Hocus Pocus originally debut in 1993 as a box office bomb, failing to compete with movie juggernauts Jurassic Park and Free Willy on its initial July release. Despite its initial poor reception, time proved to be the film’s ally, as DVD sales and repeated broadcasts on cable TV introduced the movie to a younger audience. Children, families, and others alike became entranced by the dazzling and eccentric personalities of The Sanderson Sisters, cementing the film as a cult classic. Hocus Pocus is now considered a quintessential Halloween film, encapsulating both the humor and sickening horror of the holiday. Due to its rapid growth in popularity over the years, it’s no wonder that it was granted a sequel: Followin...
Johnny Depp has been spending a lot of time in court over the past few years, so it’s not too surprising that he’s reportedly dating Joelle Rich, the UK attorney who represented him in the libel lawsuit he filed — and then lost — against The Sun newspaper. In 2020, Depp sued Sun publishers News Group Newspapers and its executive editor Dan Wootton over a 2018 article that labeled him a “wife beater” without using the words “alleged” or “accused.” The three-week trial saw Depp testify nearly 20 hours on the witness stand, repeatedly denying he was abusive towards his ex-wife Amber Heard, insisting rather that it was her who instigated violence. Judge Andrew Nicol ruled in Heard’s favor, stating that “the great majority” of her assault accusations could be “proved to the civil standard....

Seated in a sunny suite in downtown Nashville, Kelsea Ballerini starts the conversation like we’ve known each other for years and are meeting to catch up over lunch. “Where are your earrings from? Do you need a water? What part of town did you come in from?” Some of that energy is the Nashville way, and some of that is a window into Ballerini’s warm and incredibly open nature. The pop-country singer-songwriter — arguably the preeminent female artist in that space at the moment — is on the verge of releasing her fourth studio album, SUBJECT TO CHANGE, available Friday, September 23rd. She’s barefoot and wearing a bright blue dress that she explains is the same color palette as the album artwork. “Because I’m a crazy person,” she jokes. The album is a cyclical journey of fifteen tracks, all ...
It’s Consequence’s 15th anniversary, and all month long we are featuring a series of retrospective features and essays encompassing our publication’s history — as well as the entertainment landscape at large. We’re also giving some of our past CoSigned artists a chance to look back at the last 15 years with our Consequestionnaire; today’s respondents are Flatbush Zombies. One of the best parts of our Consequence: 15 Years of Sound celebration has been catching up with some of our favorite artists. We sent out our Consequestionnaire to a number of our former Artists of the Month and CoSigns to see what they had to say about the last decade and a half, and how their career has grown since we gave them our stamp of approval. Today, we reconnect with Flatbush Zombies, who we CoSigned way ...
Dave Bautista and a gang of home invaders break up an idyllic family vacation in the trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming apocalyptic thriller Knock at the Cabin, out in theaters on February 3rd, 2023. The clip opens with fathers Andrew (Jonathan Groff) and Eric (Ben Aldridge) singing along to KC and the Sunshine Band’s “Boogie Shoes” with their daughter Wen (Kristen Cui) while driving out to the woods for a break from society. While the couple takes in some sun on their cabin’s deck, however, Bautista’s character Leonard makes an unnerving introduction to Wen. “I suppose I’m here to make friends with you,” Bautista says after the young girl asks why he’s here. “Your dads, too. But my heart is broken… because of what I have to do today.” Soon enough, we find out he’s leading a cultish...
Spoon are keeping the momentum going on their latest album Lucifer on the Sofa with a full-album rework called Lucifer on the Moon, with all remixes done by Adrian Sherwood. Before the full album is out November 4th, the Austin band have shared a preview today with the new version of “On the Radio.” Spoon’s initial plan was to have Sherwood remix only a few tracks off Lucifer on the Sofa. But one thing led to another, and like a snowball effect of dub-influenced-indie rock the musicians found themselves with a track-by-track remix on their hands. “I got into the melody and the thoughts it evoked in me,” Sherwood explains in a press release. “It just evolved and we eventually found ourselves with a whole album.” Advertisement Related Video The producer takes “On the Radio” from a ...
HBO is developing a sequel to their 2019 docuseries The Case Against Adnan Syed, leading up to and following the infamous Serial subject’s release from prison. The Case Against Adnan Syed explores Syed’s conviction after his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee went missing and was subsequently found dead in 1999. The smash true crime podcast Serial reignited interest in the case, which is garnering media attention again this week after a Baltimore City judge vacated Syed’s conviction and ordered his release from prison. Prosecutors are still deciding if they want to try Syed again after new information was found suggesting the involvement of two more suspects in Lee’s murder: “The State no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction,” said Baltimore State’s Attorney Maril...
Nilüfer Yanya has released her first solo single post-PAINLESS with a cover of PJ Harvey’s “Rid of Me,” the roaring opener to her 1993 LP that shares the same name. The London native’s new take opens up the song’s overbearing “you’re not rid of me” refrain into an almost endearing plea to stay together, but like its predecessor, the obsessive adoration comes undone with a crushing, distortion-heavy climax. The track’s typically spare production has always made it the perfect canvas for Harvey to impress upon her distinctive vocals, and Yanya fully embraces the opportunity with her own unique, soulful delivery. It’s a warmer, yet wounded, interpretation, which fits perfectly considering Yanya’s read of the song as “very romantic despite what some of the lyrics get at.” In a statement, Yanya...
When arriving at a show on the “Long Live Montero Tour” (grab tickets to remaining dates here), you’re first greeted by venue security handing you a Playbill. It’s a jarring experience — particularly, as was the case at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on September 20th, when a local radio DJ is warming up the audience by blasting songs you might have attempted to grind to at a homecoming dance. But this Playbill actually sets the scene well: It has a photo of Lil Nas X on the front, adorned with butterfly wings and all. “I hate writing stuff that isn’t music but my people are forcing me at gunpoint to write this welcome note,” reads the first page in a hand-scribbled passage from the rapper, who certainly isn’t known for doing things in earnest. “This play is about my journey, what I...
The Simpsons has a history of predicting the future, but QAnon is taking the animated series’ perceived abilities to the next level. As Vice reports, the conspiracy group is certain that something bad is going to happen on September 24th, and they’re basing their assumptions on one episode of the series and a poor choice of words from a German politician. While no one at QAnon is certain what, exactly, is going to happen on September 24th, followers on different platforms have thrown around the possibility of nuclear war, a financial crisis, water poisoning, and an armed revolution. The conspiracy theorists first got the idea for a fall armageddon when German lawmaker Friedrich Merz, speaking about the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this month, misspoke and said everyon...
