Ask Dr. Mike: Embracing Our Authentic Mental Health

Spinning out of the Going There with Dr. Mike podcast presented by Consequence and Sound Mind Live, the monthly “Ask Dr. Mike” column is here to answer listeners’ questions. As we wrap up BIPOC Mental Health Month, Dr. Mike discusses how we can improve our mental health by embracing our authentic selves. Sometimes it can feel like we are trapped in a mental health paradox. On the one hand, there is so much happening in the world that can cause us to suffer emotionally: pandemic, climate change, political strife, economic suffering and inflation. Some who had never experienced depression or anxiety have begun feeling an overwhelming sense of loneliness and dread, while those already grappling with mental half have found their struggles exacerbated. On the other hand, whe...

Marcia Gay Harden on Depicting the “Universal Heartbreak” of Netflix’s Uncoupled

Marcia Gay Harden feels like one of the hardest-working actors out there; since winning her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Pollack (she was also nominated for Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River) she’s made countless appearances across film and television, often appearing in multiple episode guest-starring roles across shows including The Morning Show, Damages, The Newsroom, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, How to Get Away With Murder, and more. So it’s not a huge surprise to see her appear in Uncoupled, the new Darren Star (Sex and the City) comedy now streaming on Netflix, though it is a pleasure. The series focuses on how Michael (Neil Patrick Harris), a 40-something residential real estate agent in New York, copes with the sudden end of a 17-year relationship; Harden appears as C...

Disney Signs Open Letter Advocating for Federal Same-Sex Marriage Rights

Disney has a lot of work to do to scrub their reputation clean after they reportedly donated to every sponsor of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill earlier this year. Next up on the company’s agenda, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is signing an open letter in support of codifying some same-sex marriage rights into federal law. The open letter is spearheaded by the Human Rights Campaign, and Disney is just one in the handful of Hollywood studios taking part. With more than 170 signatories representing more than 5.3 million employees, the letter urges the US Senate to pass the Respect for Marriage Act. “Americans from all walks of life, across demographics, geographies, and party lines agree that loving, committed couples have the right to be respected and protected under the law,” th...

Kate Bush’s 10 Best Songs

This article originally ran in 2014 and has been updated in celebration of Kate Bush’s birthday on July 30th. Top Songs is a feature in which we definitively handpick the very best songs in an artist or band’s catalog. Sounds simple, right? Oh, if only. Considering the formidable back catalog of someone as musically gifted as Kate Bush, the inevitable dilemma is what to leave out of any top 10. With 10 studio albums and 33 singles to ponder, it’s a particularly tough ask. Advertisement Despite Bush’s status as a national treasure in the UK and considerable success around the world, her career has never really taken off in the US — until this year’s “Running Up That Hill” explosion, that is. Indeed, Bush’s genius is finally getting the recognition it deserves in the States (though this list...

Song of the Week: Beyoncé Is in a Galaxy of Her Own on “ALIEN SUPERSTAR”

Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, Queen Bey takes us on a journey into outer space with “ALIEN SUPERSTAR.” Beyoncé‘s new album Renaissance is an entire listening experience. The songs flow into one another with such precise care that leaving one and entering another is sometimes unnoticeable, making it the kind of record best absorbed as a whole. This also makes it difficult to single out any one track as a standout among gems, but with “ALIEN SUPERSTAR,” Queen Bey reminds us exactly who she is. “I’m one of one, I’m number one, I’m the onl...

Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in Martin Scorsese’s Shipwreck Thriller The Wager

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese can’t seem to get enough of each other lately: After wrapping production on the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon, the actor and director are teaming up for another Apple Originals Film called The Wager, as first broken by The Hollywood Reporter. Just like Flower Moon, the upcoming project is an adaptation of a non-fiction book by journalist David Grann. This time around, Scorsese is taking on Grann’s The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder, which is due out in April 2023. The Wager is set in the 1740s and tells the story of a British naval ship of the same name. After it crashed in South America’s Patagonia region while chasing a Spanish ship filled with treasure, the remaining 30-person crew somehow braved the seas in...

Metallica Jam with Stranger Things Actor Joseph Quinn Backstage at Lollapalooza

Metallica were joined backstage by a special guest ahead of their headlining performance at Lollapalooza on Thursday. Joseph Quinn, who played Eddie Munson on season four of Stranger Things, paid a pre-show visit to the band and even got a chance to join them for a performance of “Master of Puppets.” During a backstage powwow, Metallica’s James Hetfield revealed that he has watched Stranger Things since season one. “[For] my kids and I, it’s been a bonding experience for us,” the band’s frontman explained. Hetfield also thanked Quinn for doing the song “justice.” Metallica then invited Quinn to their rehearsal trailer for a quick jam session, where the actor got to show off his guitar chops on “Master of Puppets.” Afterward, the band gifted Quinn a signed guitar similar to the one he playe...

Quavo and Takeoff Fuel Migos Breakup Rumors, Drop Another Song Without Offset

For the past several months, breakup rumors have been circling Migos. Now, Quavo and Takeoff have added fuel to the fire after being announced for a Migos show without Offset and dropping another track called “Us vs. Them” that doesn’t feature him as well. Produced by DJ Durel, Duce, Eza, and Money Musik. “Us vs. Them” includes a guest appearance from Gucci Mane in which he shouts out Young Thug and Gunna. Otherwise, it’s an unremarkable trap anthem where Quavo compares the duo to the Golden State Warriors’ championship-winning backcourt of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson (which would apparently make Offset Draymond Green). Watch the music video below. “Us vs. Them” follows May’s “Hotel Lobby,” which Quavo and Takeoff released under the name Unc and Phew. At the time, it was unclear whe...

Max Headroom Reboot Headed to AMC

Max Headroom is getting a reboot with a new series in the works for AMC. According to a report by Deadline, the ’80s sci-fi series about the world’s “first computer-generated TV presenter” is being produced by Elijah Wood and Noah Young under their SpectreVision and All3Media banners. Christopher Cantwell, who previously helmed AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, has signed on to both run and write for the show. Best of all, though, is the news that original star Matt Frewer will return to step back into the role of Max Headroom. While the series ran for just two seasons from 1987 to 1988 on ABC, the character became a cult favorite. He served as the global spokesperson for the very ’80s New Coke, hosted his eponymous music video countdown show, and was even featured on the cover of Newsweek. Relat...
