Westworld Season 4 Review: A Welcome Fresh Start With Some Big Ideas to Explore

The Pitch: The third season of Westworld did not have a lot of luck on its side — specifically, the timing of its premiere could have been better, as March 15th, 2020 was not an ideal day to launch a new season of a TV show which, over the course of eight episodes, became a tale of society nearly descending entirely into apocalypse. But even since the first season, Westworld has experienced a lot of critical scrutiny, especially as the narrative has drifted further and further away from its original Michael Crichton inspiration of disaster at a high-tech amusement park for the ultra-rich. (Funny how Westworld literally is a response to one of Jeff Goldblum’s iconic quotes from another Crichton adaptation: “If Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.”) So wh...

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Will “Forgive” David Ellefson but “Won’t Play Music With Him Anymore”

Upon the announcement of Megadeth’s new album, The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead, frontman Dave Mustaine has opened up about last year’s ouster of longtime bassist David Ellefson. While Mustaine says it was a “hard decision,” he insists he “won’t play music with him anymore.” Ellefson was fired from Megadeth in 2021 when an embarrassing online sexual encounter between him and a young woman surfaced on social media. His bass parts for the upcoming album were subsequently re-recorded by Testament’s Steve DiGiorgio, while James LoMenzo has since been named as Ellefson’s permanent replacement. In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Mustaine discussed his decision to let Ellefson go from the band. “Let me just say this – it was a hard decision that had to be made,” said Mustaine. “There were a l...

Lil Nas X Says “Fuck BET” on “Late to da Party” with NBA YoungBoy: Stream

“Fuck BET!” With those words, Lil Nas X unveiled his new single featuring NBA YoungBoy, “Late to da Party.” The collab arrives amid Lil Nas X’s ongoing war of words with the network over his exclusion from being nominated at the 2022 BET Awards. Earlier this month, he accused BET of homophobia for the snub, though the network responded by placing the onus on BET’s unaffiliated Voting Academy for his lack of nominations. Ahead of the release, the rapper teased the song with a Star Wars-themed visual, complete with an intergalactic text crawl taking aim at BET that read, “NBA YOUNGBOY is on house arrest, trapped on the isolated planet HATU. The Brutal Empire of Terror (BET) has betrayed LIL NAS X, turning their back on him after using him for clout. With the music industry in turmoil, t...

WILLOW dropped her confessional new single “<maybe> it’s my fault” on Friday, June 24th via MSFTSMusic/Roc Nation along with a performance video of the track. In the visual, the Hollywood progeny finds herself staring out the window into the pouring rain before picking up her electric guitar and singing, “Met her at a party, I said, ‘She seems nice’/ Every time I thought about it I got butterflies/ And when it turned out we agree that she’s all right/ Never thought I’d be trippin’/ Off all the lost time/ That I said it was fine.” “It’s all too often in tender emotional states we try to blame our hurts on other people,” the singer said in a statement. “Even though none of us are perfect, in some capacity it’s us who allow ourselves to get into situations that don’t serve our highest p...

Kendrick Lamar Performs “Savior” and “N95” in Crown of Thorns at Paris Fashion Week: Watch

Kendrick Lamar gave a performance beside the runway at the Louis Vuitton Men’s Spring-Summer 2023 Show during Paris Fashion Week on Thursday, June 23rd. The Compton rapper, adorned in a crown of thorns resembling the one he sports on the cover artwork for his most recent LP Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, sat in the audience next to Naomi Campbell and longtime associate Dave Free for the nearly 20-minute engagement. The set began with Lamar honoring the late Louis Vuitton creative director Virgil Abloh over the instrumental from “Savior – Interlude,” solemnly repeating the phrase “Long live Virgil… How many miles away?” He then launched into “Savior,” followed by other Mr. Morale cuts including “Rich Spirit,” “Count Me Out,” and “N95,” the latter of which ranked No. 2 on Consequence’s T...

Half Waif Surprise-Releases New Piano EP Portraits: Stream

Half Waif goes back to the basics today with a surprise-released EP called Portraits. The four-track project sees the band’s Nandi Rose take two tracks each from her two previous full-length albums — 2020’s The Caretaker and last year’s Mythopoetics — and rework them into starkly stunning piano pieces. Throughout her discography under her Half Waif moniker, Rose has mixed her classical training with elements of pop and indie rock. Portraits is, in a sense, a return to form for her, allowing her to revisit her songs “Swimmer,” “My Best Self,” “Fortress,” and “Ordinary Talk” through a new lens. “I came to music and to songwriting when I was a kid, singing at a piano,” Rose explains in a press release. ”Over the years, I learned to build layered arrangements around the son...

Dave Chappelle Buys Ohio Land Where He Helped Block Affordable Housing Plan

Four months after Dave Chappelle helped block an affordable housing development in his home base of Yellow Springs, Ohio, the Yellow Springs News reports that he has purchased 19 acres of that same land. Originally, Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. had acquired 52 acres in Yellow Springs, which is home to Antioch College and a year-round population of 3,697. Oberer came to the Village Council with a request to rezone the land, so that instead of hosting mostly single-family homes, it would become a planned unit development (PUD). Under the PUD proposition, relatively cheaper townhomes and duplexes could also be built, and Oberer would donate one acre to the village for affordable housing. It would add a total of 140 dwelling units to the community. Chappelle vehemently opposed t...

Noah Weiland Releases Debut Solo EP, Says “Wish My Pops Was Here to Hear It”: Stream

Noah Weiland, the son of late Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, has released his debut solo EP, titled Last Kiss Before Detox. The three-song effort includes his recent single, “One Day,” along with two new tracks. The last couple of years have been tumultuous for Noah, who was kicked out of the now-defunct band Suspect208, which also featured Slash’s son London Hudson on drums and Robert Trujillo’s son Tye Trujillo on bass. The other members of the group cited Noah’s “dark path of drug use” as the reason for his ouster. In an interview with iHeartRadio a couple months ago, Noah revealed that he entered rehab after parting ways with the band, but insisted that his addiction to drugs actually started after he was let go from the group. He also said, “People want to see me be a stati...

Oklahoma Movie Theater Posts Warning About “Same-Sex Kissing Scene” in Lightyear

An Oklahoma movie theater posted a warning about the same-sex kiss that occurs in Pixar’s new Lightyear film, telling parents that they would fast forward through the scene. Lightyear, the new Toy Story spinoff that tells the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, has faced international controversy for briefly showing two women kissing toward the beginning of the film. The 89-ER Movie Theater in Kingfisher, a town about 50 miles northwest of Oklahoma City, posted a message on the window of the building about the scene, prompting movie goers to post pictures of the sign on social media. “Attention Parents: The management of this theatre discovered after booking ‘Lightyear’ that there is a same-sex kissing scene within the first 30 minutes of the Pixar movie,” the message reads. “We will do a...

J.K. Rowling Pranked by Russian Trolls Pretending to Be Ukrainian President Zelensky

J.K. Rowling recently hopped on to a Zoom call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, only to find out it was… not President Zelensky. Instead, Rowling was pranked by Russian-based comedy duo Vovan and Lexus, who pretended to be the president in an interview. Rowling agreed to chat about her Lumos charity, which has been working in the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine to help women and children made vulnerable by the ongoing Russian invasion. Instead, Vovan and Lexus — who have previously pranked such prominent figures as Vice President Kamala Harris and Prince Harry — asked the Harry Potter author if Dumbledore was really gay and who he slept with, adding that it was “hopefully not with a transgender,” a reference to Rowling’s rampant transphobia. Elsewhere in the interview, the...
