In Mother Night, Kurt Vonnegut compared the bigoted mind to a clock with missing gears — a “cuckoo clock in Hell” which can keep perfect time for long stretches, but which makes sudden, unimaginable leaps. Author J.K. Rowling made one such leap on Sunday, taking a piece of news — Scotland is considering amending a law to make it easier for people to self-identify their gender — and jumping straight to the most upsetting (to her) possible consequence of such a law, where cisgendered women who have just been raped will be informed by police that their penis-possessing rapist is female. Even though this hasn’t actually happened in real life, even though the Gender Recognition Reform Bill hasn’t even gone to a vote, and even though women — cisgendered and otherwise — are already capa...
From Saturday Night Live sketch to Pepsi commercials to cult classic film to now an original series, one thing remains true about MacGruber — he just can’t be stopped. The fan-favorite character played by Will Forte, created from a grab-bag of ’80s action movies cliches, continues his journey of throat-ripping and dick-punching on Peacock in eight episodes that, according to director Jorma Taccone, held nothing back. In fact, in a Zoom interview with Consequence, Taccone said that there was nothing he, Forte, and co-creator John Solomon felt was too ridiculous to include in the series. “There was nothing that we were told no about, and there was nothing that the three of us looked at each other like, ‘We shouldn’t do this.’” As Taccone explained, the only time they were ever told “no...
Say what you will about Kanye West, but the man is full of surprises. During Future’s headlining set at Rolling Loud California on Sunday (December 12th), the Atlanta rapper welcomed Ye to the stage for a surprise five-song set. Kanye began his portion of the show with “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” a hit way back from his Graduation days. Next, he performed the Donda cuts “Hurricane” and “Praise God.” After running through the Life of Pablo highlight “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1,” Kanye then assisted Future with a freestyle verse on “Fuck Up Some Commas.” This is the second time Kanye has teamed up with a pal in just the past week. After a five-year hiatus from headlining performances, he reunited with his longtime frenemy Drake for a 34-song performance at the Los Angeles Coliseum...
Guitarist/vocalist Matt Tuck of Welsh metallers BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE spoke to Germany’s Guitar about how he first started playing music. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUT.NET): “There was literally one thing that started it all. I always grew up listening to music. My dad, he wasn’t a musician but he was a music fan. And his taste was rock and kind of more singer-songwriter stuff. So I grew up listening to — with no choice of my own; it was just always on in the living room, just playing in the background — like, LED ZEPPELIN, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, THE EAGLES, FLEETWOOD MAC. So I grew up just having this thing implanted in my head even before I knew it. And then one day I was watching TV. MTV was on, and [METALLICA‘s] ‘Enter Sandman’ came...

Our 2021 Annual Report continues with the announcement of Bo Burnham as our Comedian of the Year. As the year winds down, stay tuned for more awards, lists, and articles about the best music, film, and TV of 2021. You can find it all in one place here. There’s a moment of context in Bo Burnham’s Inside where things start to click in a different way, and the whole special gets cast in a new light. At the end of the first verse and chorus of “All Eyes on Me,” Burnham describes making the decision to return to stand up comedy after a four-year hiatus from the form. In a supremely ironic fashion, he made this decision in January 2020, finally deciding that he was ready to be vulnerable in front of an audience again — all before a global shutdown. Hindsight is (clears throat) 20/20, but regardl...
