The Story Behind Silversun Pickups’ Gritty, Grinding Masterpiece “Lazy Eye”

Listen via Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | Pocket Casts | RSS Southern California natives Brian Aubert and Nikki Monninger front Silversun Pickups, one of rock music’s leading bastions of guitar glory. The band just recently released their sixth studio album, Physical Thrills, produced by the legendary Butch Vig of Garbage (who were highlighted on July’s episode of The Story Behind the Song). The LP is marked by an adventurous — and intentional — departure of sorts, a tone brilliantly set by the lead single, “Scared Together.” Advertisement Related Video But the path to this latest record starts back in 2006 with the band’s first studio album, Carnavas, and its breakout track “La...

The Mars Volta Return with Self-Titled Comeback Album: Stream

The Mars Volta are back with their new self-titled album, which marks the band’s first full-length in 10 years. Listen to the project below via Bandcamp. Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López departed The Mars Volta after releasing 2012’s Noctourniquet before returning this year with the singles “Blacklight Shine” and  “Graveyard Love.” Both tracks appear on The Mars Volta, a record that departs from the duo’s original prog rock sound in favor of more electronic melodies; perhaps that’s why the album is self-titled. (Confused about the switch up? Read our guide to The Mars Volta in 10 Songs). Check out the artwork and tracklist for The Mars Volta below, and once you’re doing listening to the record, see if you agree with our review. Advertisement Relat...

Sublime Are Getting a Biopic

Sublime are coming to a screen near you. A biopic about the reggae-rock crew is currently in the works, with the band’s own Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson executive producing. The as-yet-untitled film will document Sublime’s ascent from Long Beach misfits to household names, who didn’t achieve their first hit until after the tragic death of founding vocalist Bradley Nowell. Now, songs like “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Doin’ Time” are alt-rock radio staples, but there’s a lot more left to be told about the band behind them. Francis Lawrence will direct the Sublime biopic from a script by Chris Mundy. “Wow – we can’t believe this is finally happening and we couldn’t be more honored and excited to have the great Francis Lawrence and Chris Mundy telling our story,” Gaugh and Wilson wrote in a sta...

Rome and Duddy Announce “Winter Moon Tour” Dates

Sublime with Rome’s Rome Ramirez and Dirty Heads’ Duddy B do a lot together, whether it’s collaborating musically, co-hosting their podcast, or creating their line of CBD products. Now, Rome and Duddy are ready to return to the road together (accompanied by a full band!) for their newly announced “Winter Moon Tour.” Taking place throughout November and December, the tour will see the duo playing in 15 cities across the country. Stops include Nashville, Atlanta, Key West, Orlando, Wichita, Denver, San Diego, and Tempe. Noting that the tour is about returning to a time when we appreciated the little things in life, Rome said in a press statement, “Let’s celebrate positivity and standing together. Life is short, and you never know if the things/people you have now will be there tomorrow,...

My15: Metric Shares the Playlist of Songs They’ve Had on Repeat Since 2007

It’s Consequence‘s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be sharing artist-curated playlists that reflect the evolution of their music taste throughout the last 15 years. For today’s My15 playlist, Canadian indie rock band Metric shares their selections. Metric‘s frontwoman Emily Haines claims that, aside from the global hardships of the last few years, crafting the band’s new album Formentera was “one of the happiest processes making an album ever.” It’s evident in the very name of the album, which references an idyllic island near Ibizia off the coast of Spain, and evident in the band’s ambitious indie rock jams. For a group that has been around for nearly 20 years — not to mention one that has significant indie notoriety — it’s a pleasure to see Metric so united and enthusiasti...

Phoenix Perform “Tonight” with Ezra Koenig on Colbert: Watch

Phoenix appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, September 14th, to perform “Tonight,” their new song featuring Ezra Koenig. The Vampire Weekend vocalist joined his fellow indie rock icons by dialing in from what appeared to be a Tokyo taxi. This felt a little odd; Koenig was chilling in the back of the cab and seemingly lip synching, while Phoenix’s Thomas Mars gave a high energy performance all across the Late Show stage. But ‘odd’ can still be a lot of fun, as you can see in the performance  below. We named “Tonight” Song of the Week when it dropped earlier this month. The track appears on Phoenix’s upcoming album Alpha Zulu, which is out November 4th (pre-orders are ongoing). So far, the band has also shared the album’s t...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Jam Out at The Apollo Theater for SiriusXM’s Small Stage Series: Recap, Photos and Setlist

After a wild summer of playing sold out stadiums in the US and beyond, Red Hot Chili Peppers returned to New York City to play one of the smallest-capacity shows of their tour on Tuesday night (September 13th). Although The Apollo Theater doesn’t have the size of, say, New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, it certainly has the history. “I’m standing where Duke Ellington stood,” said Flea early on in the show, making sure the band paid their respects to one of the most legendary performance venues in the country. Luckily, Red Hot Chili Peppers definitely know how to bring their best to a legendary location like The Apollo. It wasn’t just the venue that made this performance special; the show was set to be recorded and broadcast on Red Hot Chili Peppers’ exclusive SiriusXM channel, Whole Lotta ...

Death Cab for Cutie Aren’t Bored Yet

During a recent phone call with Consequence, Ben Gibbard drops the totally unanticipated fact that he loves 100 gecs. “I’m completely obsessed with them,” he gushes about the polarizing hyperpop duo. “At 46 years old, there’s music that I should be scared of. It’s awesome that there’s music being made now that I have absolutely no idea how to make.” Being 46 also means Gibbard has spent over half his life as the frontman of Death Cab for Cutie, whose great 10th studio album Asphalt Meadows is out Friday (September 16th). Maybe it shouldn’t be shocking that he’s so enamored by 100 gecs, who sound a bit like what shotgunning five cans of Red Bull while on Adderall might feel like: Whether it’s collaborating with heavyweights like Chance the Rapper and Noah Cyrus, helming a Yoko Ono tribute a...

Gorillaz Transform Vancouver Into Cracker Island at North American Tour Kickoff: Review, Photos and Setlist

Gorillaz kicked off their North American tour on Sunday night (September 11th) to a packed Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC. The immersive experience demonstrated why the virtual band is one of the most influential acts of the past two decades — and why they’re not to be missed in person (grab tickets to the tour here). Co-creator, frontman, and primary contributor Damon Albarn was like a conductor, lovingly leading his sprawling live ensemble and exceptional backing singers. Arranged on glittering risers like an orchestra, they played underneath a big screen showing artist Jamie Hewlett’s iconic animated band members — Murdoc, Noodle, Russel, and 2D — while dancing lights bathed the room in color. Gorillaz have been masters of experimental storytelling right from the outset, creating vast, m...

Pearl Jam Cover Wet Leg’s “Chaise Longue” at Madison Square Garden: Watch

Pearl Jam had the honor of playing New York’s Madison Square Garden on the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, and the band put on a star-studded show that included shoutouts to Venus and Serena Williams, a cameo from a jacket belonging to Harry Styles, and a cover of Wet Leg’s “Chaise Longue.” Pearl Jam aren’t the only elder Gen Xers vibing on Wet Leg. Earlier this year, former president Barack Obama included their track “Angelica” on his 2022 summer playlist. The MSG cover of “Chaise Longue” came as part of a rendition of the PJ classic, “Daughter.” Fan footage captured frontman Eddie Vedder wiggling his hips and sliding his voice along (alongue?) the melody. Elsewhere in the evening, Pearl Jam covered Prince’s “Purple Rain,” with Vedder donning a sparkling jacket h...
