Paris Jackson Goes Grunge on New Single “lighthouse”: Stream

Paris Jackson has gone grunge with her latest solo single, “lighthouse.” “I can feel the lights go low/ But I don’t wanna let go now/ Maybe if I turn around, you’ll see me/ And what you used to be/ Your wave keeps crashing in a changeless sea/ And I can’t help but feel it’s drowning me/ No, I can’t breathe/ The oil’s burnt in the lighthouse, my ship wrecked on your teeth,” she snarls on the chorus over boisterous guitars. According to a press release, “lighthouse” was specifically inspired by Nirvana’s “Sliver.” The song serves as the lead single off the Hollywood progeny’s forthcoming as-yet-untitled EP, a follow-up to her three-song project the lost from earlier this year and her 2021 collaborations with Manchester Orchestra (“adagio”) and The Struts (“Low Key in Love”). A Dream Setlist for Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction’s Upcoming Tour

Big news for ‘90s alt-rock enthusiasts and those who spent a little too much time playing Guitar Hero in 2007: Smashing Pumpkins and their pals in Jane’s Addiction will embark on a 32-date tour across North America this fall (grab tickets here). As two of some of the biggest and best names of their era, their “Spirits on Fire Tour” is already guaranteed to be one for the books. While Smashing Pumpkins carved out their own space in the grunge scene, Jane’s Addiction were doing the same with their funk-influenced brand of alt-metal, meaning there’s a lot of variety in store for concert attendees. But with over a dozen albums between the two bands, how could they decide which ones to bring out for their arena run? Advertisement Picking a setlist is a grueling task, which is why we at Con...

Metric Bemoan the Internet on New Single “Doomscroller”: Stream

The Metric renaissance is in full swing. The indie rock band’s eighth studio album Formentera is coming July 8th, and they’re offering another preview today with the 10-minute epic “Doomscroller” and its accompanying music video. “Doomscroller” is essentially divided into two parts: Its front half starts with a steady bass line and four-on-the-floor beat, embellished with scintillating synths. The instrumentals build into a roaring blast of dark house music, as singer Emily Haines’ vocals are distorted to oblivion. Then, the track drops into a piano ballad, before revving things back up with a more rock-forward finale. As its title implies, “Doomscroller” evokes the anxiety of witnessing the news cycle in the digital age, where disaster always feels as though it’s just one tweet away....

Artist of the Month Jordana on How Self-Growth and The Strokes Influenced Her New Album Face The Wall

Artist of the Month is an accolade given to an up-and-coming artist or group who is poised for the big time. For May 2022, we’re celebrating Jordana and her irresistible new album Face The Wall. There was a moment of Tumblr fandom around 2013 where indie was more than just a record label status or music style. It was a cherished aesthetic, a place for young people to collect images and stories of untouchable cool, and, most of all, a place to bask in the stylish iconography of bands like The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, The Neighbourhood, and The 1975. Now that we’re in 2022 and in the midst of a supposed “comeback” of the indie sleaze aesthetics, those fans have grown up and begun music careers of their own; Jordana, Consequence‘s May Artist of the Month, is one of them. Her ...

Arcade Fire brought the confetti for their celebratory performance of “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)” at the 2022 Juno Awards on Sunday. Watch the performance below. The Canadian collective played the latest single from their sixth album WE sans the swaying, inflatable dancers that debuted at Arcade Fire’s surprise Coachella set and were later showcased in the song’s music video. But their ebullient and unpredictable energy remained as the band charged through a spirited rendition. Instead, the group was joined by a percussion section of precocious youngsters who not only brightened the stage with beaming smiles but also drove home the coming-of-age message of the rousing anthem’s lyrics. Check it out below. “Unconditional” was one of the four songs that the band played on SNL as part of t...

The Story Behind How They Might Be Giants Built a “Birdhouse in Your Soul”

Listen via Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | Pocket Casts | RSS The transition from 1980s new wave and hair rock to 1990s far less follically-minded indie pop wasn’t always a smooth one. But enigmatic, idiosyncratic, and frequently non-grammatical duo They Might Be Giants made it all go down so easy with instantly catchy hooks and frequently hilarious lyrics. The band’s tongue-in-cheek non-sequiturs and unconventional instrumentation masked a knack for writing songs that made us hum the first time we heard them. Nowhere is that more evident than in their major label breakout hit “Birdhouse in Your Soul” from their 1990 album Flood, which is likely the first — and only — song ever sung f...

Sunflower Bean Give New York a Headful of Sugar at Webster Hall: Photos + Setlist

On the eve of the release of their new album, Headful of Sugar — and drummer Olive Faber’s birthday, no less — Sunflower Bean finally got to headline one of their hometown’s biggest venues: Webster Hall. (Get tickets for the rest of their upcoming headlining dates here.) The setlist featured almost every song from the trio’s latest LP (except highlight “Stand by Me,” which admittedly was a strange omission), but there were plenty of fan favorites and deep cuts in there too. “Twentytwo” — a track Julia Cumming revealed to us is her favorite song to play live — mad an appearance early on, while the encore closed with “Somebody Call a Doctor” off their very first EP, 2015’s Show Me Your Seven Secrets. While the concert was clearly a showcase for Headful of Sugar, it was also a fasci...
